진각혜심의 간화선사상과 선시와의 상관성 (Jingag Hyesim's Seon Doctrines and Their Relevance to The Poetry of the Naked Hermit)

초록

본 논문은 혜심의 간화선사상이 그의 선시에 미친 영향을 살펴 그 상관성을 밝히는데 목적이 있다. 진각혜심은 고려시대 스승 보조지눌에 의해서 도입된 간화선을 널리 홍포하고 실질적으로 우리나라에 정착시킨 선사다. 혜심의 선사상은 돈오돈수의 경절법으로 특징 지울 수 있는데, 일상의 묘용(妙用) 중에서 깨달음을 추구하는 활달한 돈법(頓法)과 본래인(本來人)인 무사인(無事人)의 추구가 그 핵심이다.
한국선시의 개창자로 손꼽히는 혜심은 고려시대 다수의 선시를 남긴 선사로 유명하다. 혜심은 그의 『무의자시집』에 무려 수 백 수의 선시를 남기고 있는데 여기에서 혜심의 선사상이 선시에 투영된 뚜렷한 근거를 찾을 수 있다.
선시에는 한 선사의 선사상과 그의 지향이 오롯이 담겨있다. 마치 시인의 시정신과 철학이 시에 고스란히 녹아있게 마련인 것처럼, 선시 역시 각 선사가 이룩한 선적(禪的) 경지와 그 깨달음의 요체를 함축하기 때문이다. 그러나 비록 그렇다 하더라도 모든 선시에서 해당 선사의 구체적 선사상을 다 발견하기는 어렵다. 기본적으로 선사는 시인과는 달리 ‘선시’에 자신의 전부를 쏟아 붓고 매진하는 것이 아니라, 선을 통한 ‘깨달음[道]’을 얻기 위한 구도에 전존재를 걸기에 그렇다.
이렇게 특정 선사의 변별적 사상 내지 수행법적 특징을 구체적으로 담보하고 있는 선시를 발견하는 것이 쉽지 않은 상황에서 혜심 선시에서 발견되는 ‘돈오돈수의 격외시’와 ‘의정타파의 화두시’는 문학적 가치와 더불어 선사상적으로도 그 의의가 매우 크다. 한 순간의 인식의 대전환을 통해 깨달음으로 직절하는 ‘돈오돈수의 격외시’와 본질적인 의문을 던지며 진리의 당체로 이끄는 ‘화두시’는 혜심 선시의 독보적이면서도 걸출한 특징으로 규정지을 수 있다. 이렇게 혜심의 선시는 그의 선사상과 결코 유리되어 설명되어질 수 없는 직접적이고 밀접한 상관성을 가지고 있다.

영어초록

When we attempt to understand Seon poetry, the point is not ‘an understanding of the poetry itself’ but of ‘enlightenment.’ The quality of a Seon poem is not determined by its ? as a poem but the poet’s Seon enlightenment experience implied in it. In other words, when we analyze a Seon poem, the focal point should be to reveal its esoteric implication of the poet’s enlightenment. There thus are difficulties in having proper sensitivities to and reaching at an appropriate understanding of a Seon poem, difficulties somewhat different from those we experience with other poems in general.
What, then, are required of a critic of Seon poetry for proper analysis and understanding of Seon poetry? To say the conclusion first, s/he needs to have proper “aptitude for Seon” and comprehensive “insight into Seon doctrines.” In Buddhist tradition, enlightenment experiences have been expressed in gāthās, beginning with that of the Buddha. While giving sermons, the Buddha stopped from time to time and reiterated his points in gāthās. Without understanding gāthās, therefore, it is impossible to say that you have understood Buddhist teachings.
It thus is a matter of great concern that there recently are some attempts to approach to the Buddha’s gāthās and Seon poetry from the perspective of secular literary criticism. Without discerning the essence of Seon poetry, i.e., the world of enlightenment, it never is possible to have appropriate access to Seon poetry, however brilliant sensitivity to and insight into literature you may have.
This article attempts to analyze The Poetry of the Naked Hermit (Muuija sijib), a collection of Jingag Hyesim’s Seon poems from a perspective different from the ones of recent studies of Seon poetry. It applies understandings of Hyesim’s doctrines of “sudden enlightenment” and Ganhwa Seon(Kungan Chan) to his poetry and classifies his poems into three categories according to their Seon topics:poems of sudden enlightenment; those regarding Hwadu meditation; and those of ‘subtle enlightenment.’ The relevance of Hyesim’s Seon doctrines to his poetry could thus be revealed.
This is a new and creative approach in that Seon poetry is analyzed only in terms of Seon doctrines, without imposing literary theories in general. It is expected that this article suggest an example of Seon poetry study on the basis of solid understanding of Seon doctrines, and contribute somehow to establishment of a proper framework methodology of Seon poetics.
