용성진종의 '선문촬요' 번역과 간화선정관 (YongSeongjinjong‘s translation of 'Sunmoonchwalyo' and Ganhwaseonview)

초록

용성진종은 한국 근현대불교사의 주요인물 중에 특기할 대종사다. 그는 조선말 근대초기에 불교가 풍전등화의 위기에서 재생의 생기를 불어넣었다. 특히 한문 불전에 대한 번역의 역사는 매우 오랜 기간에 걸쳐서 진행되어졌다. 말하자면 한글이 창제된 시점으로부터 시작되어 조선 역사에 면면이 이어졌다. 하지만 근현대적 한글 의미의 번역은 아마도 백용성에 의해서 본격화 되었다고 해야 할 것이다.
먼저 백용성이 번역한 『선문촬요』는 『법해보벌』과 운문사와 범어사에서 판각하여 출판한 『선문촬요』, 『용성대사 전집』과 성주사 현토본인 『선문촬요』 등에 비해서 지극히 적은 분량이다. 하지만 그 간략한 중에도 간화수행의 요점이 되는 부분을 모두 총괄하여 요긴한 것들이 담보되었다는 것을 검토하였다.
다음은 백용성이 번역한 주요어구들은 당시 일반대중이 이해하는 용어로 번역하였다. 즉, 간화수행의 일반화라고 할 수 있는 세 가지로 이유로 요약하였다. 다시 말해서, 첫째로 백용성의 번역은 기존의 한문 투의 한글 음사가 아니라 당시 한글 의미의 해석을 시도한 것이다. 둘째는 깨달음의 개인과 사회와 국가적 실현이었고, 우리 민족의 자주독립주권국가관을 나타낸 것이다. 셋째는 일반대중의 포교를 위한 번역이며, 기독교에 대한 대처방안으로 시도한 것임을 검토해 보았다.
셋째로 백용성이 번역한 주요용어에 대한 이해와 제안이다. 즉, 다른 일상적인 어구들도 마찬가지이지만 현대 불교학계에서 일상으로 상용하는 주요어구들에 대해서는 현재 일반적으로 사용하는 용어들로 바꾸어 보길 제안해 보았다. 또한 현대 불교학계에서 일반화된 용어는 현재 일반대중이 이해하는 부분으로 환원하길 제안해 보았다.
끝으로 이상에서 번역한 내용은 교문과 조사문으로 구분하여 교문에서 설법한 내용을 모두 일물(一物)이란 진심과 일심으로 치환하여 오직 마음을 체득하는 것이 바로 대각(大覺)이라는 것이다. 따라서 교문에서 밝히는 점차적인 깨달음의 차례와 단계를 초과하여 단박에 깨달아 점차 습기를 제거하는 점수(漸修)를 드러내었다. 이러한 내용은 『능엄경』에서 구차제정을 일심의 체득으로 치환하여 간절하고 절실하게 화두를 참구하는 것이 바로 외도와 마군을 벗어나는 조사선의 간화선정관의 특징임을 살펴보았다.

영어초록
