新安船 出水 倣古銅器의 기형과 용도 (Shape and purpose of the antique-shaped Chinese Bronzes found in the Shinan Wreck)

초록

新安船은 1323년 출항한 元代 무역선으로 浙江省 寧波에서 일본 하카다(博多)로 향하던 중 신안 앞바다에서 침몰하였다. 여기에서는 14세기 사회·경제·문화적 상황을 파악할 수 있는 다양한 종류의 유물들이 출수되었다. 출수유물은 대부분 도자유물이나 금속유물도 다양한 종류가 포함되었다. 특히 이중 중국 宋代에 시작되어 크게 유행한 倣古銅器가 포함되어 주목된다.
夏商周 三代의 청동기를 모방한 방고동기는 송대 들어 제작되기 시작하였으며, 당대 동아시아 문화사조를 대표하는 중요한 공예품으로 후대까지 크게 유행한다. 방고동기는 송대 황실과 함께 문인들 사이에서도 크게 유행하며지방에서는 중앙의 양식을 모방한 듯한 방고동기를 私鑄造할 정도로 확산되었고, 이는 고려나 일본에까지 전해져 문인귀족들 사이에서 크게 유행하였다. 이러한 배경으로 인하여 신안선에서도 방고동기가 출수되는 상황을 확인할 수 있다.
신안선 방고동기의 기형과 유형을 분석한 결과 여러 가지 청동기 기형중 한정된 기형만이 출수되어 이가 특정한 용도로 수출된 물품임을 파악해볼 수 있다. 방고동기의 기형은 크게 병과 향로가 출수되었다. 그런데 이들은같은 기형내에서 통일된 유형을 찾기가 어려우며 매우 다양한 형식이 나타나고 있다. 이와 함께 전체적으로 주조수준이 높지 않고 기물 에 공기집이 나타나 이가 사주조된 방고동기일 것으로 추정된다.
기형의 원형은 송대 방고기물 도설인 『宣和博古圖』에서 찾을 수 있는 것들이 있지만 이가 완벽하게 일치하지 않고 문양이나 세부표현에서 차이가 나타난다. 특히 향로 중에는 명대의 도설인 『宣德彝器圖譜』에 나타난 향로와 매우 유사한 것들이 존재하여 주목된다. 기물의 세부적인 특징 중에는 송대에보이지 않는 새로운 특징이 나타나고 이가 명대로 이어지는 것으로 보아 신안선 방고동기는 당시 민간에서 유행한 고동기 양식을 모방해 제작된 것으로생각된다. 이를 통하여 신안선의 방고동기는 각각 다른 공방에서 사주조되어수급된 것으로 당시 민간에서 유행한 방고동기 양식을 반영하여 제작된 것으로 추측해 볼 수 있다.
신안선 방고동기의 용도를 수요자의 측면에서 살펴보았다. 목간의 明文을 통해 신안선은 공무역과 사무역이 동시에 이루어지는 무역선으로 물품의수요자는 東福寺와 유력한 귀족을 중심으로 한 개인 수요자들이 포함되어 있음이 밝혀졌다. 따라서 방고동기는 동복사라는 사찰의 공양구와 문인문화와 관련한 용도로 주문한 것으로 추정된다. 먼저 방고동기가 동복사의 수요품일 경우 향화공양을 위한 공양구로 사용하였을 것이다.불교 공양에서 향과 꽃을 공양하는 가장 중요한 것 중 하나로 이때 사용하는 기형이 바로 향로와 화병이다. 특히 관이병 중에는 동일한형식으로 세트를 이루는 듯한 기물이 발견되어 이가 五具足을 구성하는 기물일 가능성도 있을 것으로 추측하였다. 방고동기의 주문자가 개인 수요자들일 경우 송대 사대부들 사이에서 시작된 문인문화와 관련한 기물로 추정된다. 송대 문인들에게 향은 필수적인 기호품으로 자리잡게 되었다. 또한 송대 가구 배치의 구조가 변화하면서 화병은 서가를 장식하는 필수적인 장식품으로 인식되었다. 이와 함께 문인귀족들은방고동기를 감상하고 즐기기 위해 수집하기도 하였다. 이러한 문화 현상은 원대에 이어 동아시아 전체로 확산되어 신안선에서 방고동기형 향로와 화병이출수되는 상황을 살펴볼 수 있다.

영어초록

The Shinan Wreck is a trade ship sailed in 1323 during the Yuan Dynasty. Itleft Ningbo, Zhejiang to Hakata in Japan and sank near the Shinan coast. Various antiquities which may allow us to know about social, economic, andcultural situations of 14th century were excavated. Most of the antiquitiesfrom sea were potteries but various types of metal antiquities were includedas well. Especially, it is notable that antique-shaped Chinese Bronzes whichstarted during Song Dynasty and prevailed were found.
These antique-shaped Chinese Bronzes imitated the bronzes during Hsia,Shang, Zhou Dynasty and it was during Song dynasty that these Bronzesstarted to be produced. It represented the cultural trend in East Asia duringthe time and it continued its great popularity through generations. Theseantique-shaped Chinese Bronzes were popular among the imperial families ofSong as well as writers. Some Bronzes were produced individually fromprovinces and these resembled and imitated the style of the central areas. Thepopularity of these Bronzes were spread to Goryeo dynasty and Japan. Thisbackground confirms the reason why these Bronzes were found in ShinanWreck.
As a result of analyzing the shapes and pattern of the Shinan Wreckantique-shaped Chinese Bronzes, only limited shapes were found whichimplies that these Bronzes were exported for certain purpose. The commonshapes of bronze found on the ship are bottles and incense burners in large. But there had very diverse patterns; therefore it was hard to find uniformpatterns among the same shape. Along with this observation, the overallcasting level was not advanced and the Bronzes showed air marks implyingthat these were personally produced bronzes.
The original shape of these shapes can be found in the 『Xuan he yuan gu tu宣和博古圖』 which is a diagram about the Bronzes during Song Dynasty butit is not perfectly matching where details and patterns are different. Especially,some of these Bronzes resemble the incense burners shown in the 『xuan deyi qi tu pu 宣德彝器圖譜』 which is a diagram about the Bronzes during MingDynasty. Among the detailed characteristics of the bronzes, there are somenew characteristics which can't be seen during Song Dynasty and thesepatterns have resemblence to the Bronzes in Ming Dynasty. So based on thisobservation, the Bronzes found in Shinan Wreck was produced in differentworkshops and collected reflecting the styles of the Bronze prevailing amongpeople during the time.
This study analyzed the purpose of the Shinan Wreck Bronzes in theperspectives of the consumers. According to the inscription written in woodtablets, Shinan Wreck is a trade ship where public trade and private tradesboth occurred. The consumers of the goods may be Dohokuji temple orindividuals such as influential nobles. Therefore, the antique-shaped ChineseBronzes were ordered for the purpose of offerings for the temple calledDohokuji or for the purpose of scholar's culture.
First, if the bronzes were ordered by the Dohokuji temple, then it must havebeen used for the incense and flower offering. In the Buddhism, offeringflower and inscense is one of the most important things and inscent burnerand flower bottles were used for this. Especially, some of the bottles withtwo hands had same pattern and looked like a set which was suspected to bea object forming '5 offerings' consisting of 2 bottles, 2 incense burners, and 1candle stick. If these Bronzes were ordered by individual consumers, it is presumed that itresulted from the writer's culture originated from nobles of Song Dynasty.
Incense was settled among writers of Song Dynasty as indispensible item of personal preference. Also, flower bottles were considered as essentialdecoration of the bookshelves as the arrangements of furniture changedduring the Song Dynasty. Moreover noble scholars collected these bronzes forappreciations. This cultural phenomenon was expanded to whole East Asiaduring the Yuan Dynasty which resulted in finding the antique-shapedChinese Bronzes with bottle and incense burner shapes in Shinan Wreck.
