초록

38선은 아시아-태평양전쟁 전후 처리 과정에서 미국의 대아시아 정책의 일환으로 전개된 미군의 한반도 주둔․점령을 위한 군사상의 필요에 의해 획정된 분할선이었다. 38선을 기준으로 이북과 이남에 소련군과 미군이 진주․점령하고, 군정청이 설치되어가는 가운데 남한사회에서는 38선 철폐를 위한 움직임이 활발히 일어났다. 38선은 민족의 통일을 통한 독립국가 건설의 장벽으로서 해방은 되었지만 독립은 달성하지 못한 조선인들에게 독립을 위해 반드시 철폐되어야 하는 것이었다. 하지만 미소공동위원회의 결렬과 신탁통치 체제가 강고화되어가면서 38선은 남북한의 배타적 적대관계를 강화하는 이념의 분할선으로 작동하였다. 1948년 단독정부 수립, 남북한 분단 체제의 성립을 전후 한 시기에 생산된 38선 월경 서사에서 38선 월경의 행위는 민족 수난사의 맥락 속으로 포섭되어갔다. 그때 지난하고 고통스러운 38선 월경의 과정은 북에서 남으로의 방향성을 띄었고, 남한사회의 민족-됨을 예비하는 인구의 이동으로 가시화되어 서사적 정당성을 획득했다. 하지만 그 가운데에는 구식민자였던 일본인이나 불법적인 월경을 감행하는 잠상꾼들이 비록 흐릿하게나마 그 흔적을 남기고 있었다. 그들의 38선 월경은 구체적으로 서사화되어 제시되지 않은 채 비가시적인 것들로 남아 있었지만 엄연히 존재했다. 그런 점에서 38선 월경 서사는 월경하는 개인과 집단의 행위와 욕망을 민족적 층위에서 정당성을 부여하는 효과를 발휘했던 것이다.

The 38th parallel was a dividing line defined by the military necessity for the presence and occupation of the Korean Peninsula during the post-Asia-Pacific War as part of US policy toward Asia. On the 38th parallel, Soviet and American troops were pearled and occupied north and south. With the installation of the Military Administration, movements for the elimination of the 38th parallel have been active in South Korean society. The 38th parallel was a barrier to building an independent state through national unification. Therefore, the Koreans who were liberated but did not achieve independence must be abolished the 38th parallel for independence. However, with the strengthening of the trusteeship system, the 38th parallel acted as a dividing line of ideology that strengthened the exclusive hostility of the two Koreas.
