다선일미에 대한 선(禪)적 의미 고찰 (An Investigation on the Seon Buddhist Implications of daseon ilmi)

초록

기호음료에서 약용, 사교, 정신음료로까지 광범위한 문화적 전개 양상을 보이고 있는 것이 차(茶)이다. 차가 정신문화로까지 이어진 것은 선종과의 연관성을 부인할 수 없으며, 이를 대표하는 용어가 다선일미일 것이다. 이 용어 속에 그동안 전개되어온 정신세계로서의 차의 면모가 응축되어 있음을 알 수 있다.
본래 성품에 대한 참구이자, 본질적 근원세계의 대명사인 선이 하나의 현상물인 차와 한 맛이라는 것을 선사상의 입장에서 살피자면, 무정설법과 불이, 화두의 관점에서 논해질 수 있다. 유정물이건 무정물이건 실상의 하나하나가 곧 진법의 세계이자 끊임없이 법을 설한다는 무정설법의 관점, 또한 깨달음의 경지인 일미의 다른 표현이자 일미에 이르는 방법론으로 제시되는 불이문의 관점에서 타당성을 검토해 볼 수 있다. 그리고 끽다거(喫茶去), 끽다끽반(喫茶喫飯) 등의 화두는 차가 선사들의 일상과 긴밀한 관계에 있음을 보여 준다. 화두란, 근원세계를 뜻함과 동시에 그에 이르는 방법(열쇠)이다. 차 화두는 깨달음에 이르는 길이자 깨달음의 세계이며, 그러한 깨달음의 세계가 곧 일상임을 가리키고 있다.
다선일미란 차가 그대로 여여한 불세계이자 부처의 설법임을 가리키고 있으며, 차수행과 선수행이 둘이 아닌 경지이며, 또한 깨달음의 세계가 평상의 일로 나타난 선어이자 선차문화라 할 것이다.

영어초록

Tea is showing extensive cultural developments from a favorite beverage to a medicinal, social-intercourse, and mind-cultivating beverage. It is undeniable that the development of tea as a spiritual culture is related with Seon Buddhism, and a term representing this development will be daseon ilmi, which literally means that tea and Seon is of one and the same taste. It can be seen that this term condenses the aspect of tea as a spiritual world that has been unfolded so far.
From the standpoint of Seon thought, the same taste of Seon and tea, in which Seon focuses on the inherent nature of humans and is not different from the absolute realm, while tea is merely a phenomenal object, can be discussed in terms of mujeong seolbup (doctrine that insentient things can preach the Buddha’s message), non-duality, and hwadu (huatou). In other words, the appropriateness of daseon ilmi can be examined in terms of mujeong seolbeop in which each and every phenomenon on earth irrespective of sentient or non-sentient beings is a manifestation of real dharma and preaches this dharma incessantly, and in terms of non-duality which is another way of expressing ilmi (one and the same taste), namely the state of enlightenment, and is presented as a method to reach the ilmi. Also, the hwadu such as “have a cup of tea” and “when having tea, just have it; when hungry, just eat” show that tea has a close relation with everyday life of Seon masters. The hwadu means a fundamental world and is a key to such a world at the same time. The tea hwadu, as a way to enlightenment and a world of enlightenment itself, indicates that such a world of enlightenment is not separate from everyday life. The term daseon ilmi demonstrates that tea itself is the absolute Buddha-realm and the preaching of the Buddha, and that the practices of tea and Seon are non-dual in nature. Also the daseon ilmi is a Seon Buddhist term and a Seon-tea culture in which the world of enlightenment shows itself as an ordinary matter.
