초록

본 연구의 대상은 근대 한학자인 喚醒 魚聚善(1870∼1936)의 <中庸記疑>이다. <中庸記疑>는 『中庸』의 각 장에 대하여 자신의 견해를 정리한 불과 43면의 저술이다. 하지만, 내용은 그의 삶을 일관하는 사유의 중요한 축인 『中庸』의 이해를 보여준다는 측면에서 거대 담론을 포함한다. 또한 위정척사의 선봉이었던 華西學派 정신의 근간을 탐구한다는 의미도 부여할 수 있다.
어취선의 <中庸記疑>는 『中庸』 해석학이다. 그는 주자의 설명이 미진하여 의문이 들만한 『中庸』의 문제에 집중하여 설명하였다. 그중 도통에 입각한 정밀한 해석과 創見이 보이는 ‘中’과 ‘庸’의 의미해석을 본고는 過程哲學의 영원한 객체(eternal object)와 合生(concrescence) 개념을 도입하여 분석하였다.
어취선은 도통론을 계승하여 『中庸』의 ‘性’과 ‘道’ 개념으로 이단의 문제를 지적하고, 自然과 必然의 정밀한 해석, ‘費而隱’의 ‘而’의 풀이 등 새로운 시도에도 학파의 전통을 고수하였다고 믿었다. ‘橫說’과 ‘竪說’의 용어 사용에 宋時烈·李恒老·宋近洙·柳重敎 등 尤庵과 華西 學派의 영향이 비록 일부 엿보이지만, 그의 해석 가운데 가장 창의적인 부분은 ‘中庸’의 의미를 ‘橫說’ ‘竪說’로 설명한 것이다.
보편성을 지향하면서 끊임없이 변화해야 하는 것이 ‘中庸’의 실천이고, 다양한 함의를 담기 위해서는 해석의 포괄성이 중요하다. 어취선의 해석은 過程哲學에서 말하는 합생의 태도이다. 그 결과 당대 유학의 성과를 담은 어취선의 <中庸記疑>가 ‘中庸’ 해석의 정수에 좀 더 가까워진 것은 분명하다. 하지만 모두 긍정하기에는 그 한계가 뚜렷하다. 그 추론의 과정은 道統을 중시하는 사고에 따라서 논의를 전개하였다. 학통이라는 용어의 해석 가능성에 제한이 있었으며, 그 안에서 확대 해석을 통하여 논리성을 담보하려는 시대적 한계가 분명히 존재한다. 그러나 이는 정적 존재론을 중시하는 전통적 관점에서의 평가이며, 過程哲學의 관점에서 보면 어취선의 견해는 합생을 통한 창조성의 발휘이며, 긍정적으로 평가할 여지가 충분하다.

영어초록

This study examines “Jungyonggiui” (中庸記疑), a 43-page work by the modern Confucian scholar Eo Chwiseon (1870-1936), which summarizes his unique interpretations of each chapter of the Confucian classic Jungyong. Despite its brevity, “Jungyonggiui” encapsulates a profound discourse, revealing Eo's understanding of Jungyong as a central axis of his thought and providing insights into the philosophical foundations of the Hwasseo School, a leading proponent of the Wijeongcheoksa movement advocating for the preservation of Confucian orthodoxy and rejection of Western influences.
Eo's “Jungyonggiui” is a hermeneutical study of Jungyong. Eo focuses on explaining passages in Jungyong where Zhu Xi's interpretations seem insufficient or raise questions. Notably, Eo employs the concepts of eternal objects and concrescence from process philosophy to analyze the meanings of jung (中) and yong (庸), demonstrating his precise interpretation based on the theory of Confucian orthodoxy and his own original insights. To fully grasp the characteristics of Eo's interpretation, it is essential to understand how the grand discourse of human ontology and epistemology is embodied in “Jungyonggiui.” Eo's adherence to tradition while making new attempts, such as addressing false truth through the concepts of nature (性) and “the Way” (道), providing detailed interpretations of “natural” (自然) and “inevitable” (必然), and analyzing the conjunction “and” (而) in the phrase “expend and conceal” (費而隱), demonstrates his commitment to this tradition. While there are glimpses of the influence of Song Siyeol, Yi Hangno, Song Geunsu, Yu Junggyo, and other figures from the Wuam and Hwasseo schools, the most creative aspect of his interpretation lies in explaining jung and yong as “horizontal exposition” (橫說) and “vertical exposition” (竪說), respectively.
The practice of Jungyong involves striving for universality while embracing constant change. To encompass diverse implications, interpretive comprehensiveness is crucial. Process philosophy provides an excellent methodology for explaining this phenomenon. Eo's interpretation aligns with the concept of concrescence in process philosophy. As a result, his “Jungyonggiui,” which encapsulates the achievements of contemporary Confucian scholarship, undoubtedly approaches the essence of interpreting Jungyong. However, there are clear limitations to affirming everything. Eo's reasoning follows the principles of orthodoxy, revealing the inherent limitations of his era in seeking logical consistency through expanded interpretations of terms within the confines of his scholarly lineage. Nevertheless, from the perspective of process philosophy, Eo's view represents the expression of creativity through concrescence and serves as evidence of the organic nature of philosophy, offering ample grounds for a positive evaluation.
