화문석 문양디자인의 현대적 재구성에 관한 연구-조선조 초상화를 중심으로 (A Study on a Reconstruction of Pattern Design Found in Hwamunseok - Focusing on The Portraits of The Joseon Dynasty)

초록

화문석(花紋席)은 ‘꽃문양이 있는 화려한 돗자리’라는 뜻으로, 한국의 화문석은 7세기부터 외국에서 주문 제작되어 수출했다는 기록이 남아 있다. 그동안 화문석은 인천의 강화에서 생산된 것을 최고로 쳤는데 이는 강화도가 완초 재배에 가장 적합한 기후와 화문석의 제직기술, 염색 등이 그것이다. 그러나 1960년대 이후 산업과 경제 개발로 환경과 경제적 측면 등 여러 가지 여건으로 화문석과 완초 제품이 사양길을 걷게 되었고 제품의 질 또한 떨어지게 되었다. 따라서 화문석과 완초 제품의 질과 디자인 향상을 위해 인천시와 강화군에서는 화문석개발 사업을 진행하게 되었고, 연구자는 1992년부터 강화의 화문석 디자인 지도를 시작하게 되었다. 그 후 강화군 및 업체와 연구를 시작하였으며, 꾸준히 디자인 개발을 진행하였었다. 연구하는 동안, 재료의 특성상 보관이 어려워 과거의 전통문양을 파악하기 어려웠으며 남아있는 화문석과 제품들도 소수에 불과했다. 기록고려시대에 들어서면서 각각의 전문적인부서들을 두었다. 염색에 관한 일을 맡았던 都染署, 궁증 물품을 공급하는 長興庫 등이 있었으며, 장흥고는 고려제도를 계승하여 조선시대에 布匹`紙席 등의 일을 관장한다.; 김혜림 (2016). 조선조후기 초상화를 통해본 화문석 문양의 연구: 석사학위논문, 한서대학교 국제예술디자인대학원. 14.
에는 기술자를 궁에서 임명하고 그 수요가 매우 많았음을 알 수 있으나 현존하는 유물이 부족해 전통문양을 재현하기 어려웠다. 그 후, 조선조 초상화에서 완전한 형태의 화문석은 아니나 부분적으로 문양을 발견 할 수 있었고, 식물문, 동물문, 기하문 등이 주류를 이루고 있었다. 신분이 높을수록 용이나 봉황 등을 화려하고 섬세하게 표현했으며, 낮을수록 문양을 단순하게 표현되었다. 그러나 문양의 양식이나 시대적 변화를 연구하기에 자료가 매우 부족하여, 초상화를 통해 추출된 각각의 문양요소를 하나의 기호로 분해하여 이들을 조합 반복하거나 연결시킴으로써 현대디자인에 적합하도록 재구성하였다. 재구성의 방법은 모든 문양이 디지털 구현이 가능하도록 했으며, 확실치 않은 문양은 추측하여 재 디자인하였다. 색채는 원래의 초상화 화문석을 기본으로 하였으나 현대에 적합하지 않은 배색은 재 배색 하였다. 따라서 본 연구인 전통적 화문석 문양의 재구성이 현대 디자인에 활용되길 기대한다.

영어초록

"Hwamuneok" means Korea's traditional sedge mat with brilliant flower patterns. According to old literatures, Hwamunseok had been manufactured on order-based and exported to foreign countries since 7 century. The best "Hwamunseok" among the several craft villages had been produced in Ganghwa (island), Incheon mainly because of local advantages in weather for cultivating sedge and dyeing. Unlikely to rapid industrial/economic development in Korea since 1960's, sedge craft including Hwamunseok has been declined as an industry. Thus, in order to improve the quality and design of hwamunseok products, In Incheon and Ganghwa local government was carried out the development of the hwamunseok project, and the researcher had opportunities in bringing up the hwamunseok design of Ganghwa Island since 1992. After that, the researcher began to survey with the relevances who involved in Ganghwa County, companies, etc. and continued to develop the hwamunseok design development. During the study, due to the nature of the material, it is difficult to preserve, it was difficult to identify the traditional patterns of the past, and there were only a few remaining products related to hwamunseok.
According to the records, craftsmen were appointed separately from the palace and found that the demand was very high. However, it was difficult to reproduce traditional patterns because of the lack of existing artifacts due to the nature of the materials. While we have a few traditional design pattern applied to the craft works remained, the researcher could reproduce traditional design patterns in Joseon dynasty by full utilization of exploitable pattern found in the Portraits. The portraits in Joseon dynasty with extreme precision and reality show geometric patterns; Lower the social class, simpler the pattern; Higher the class, more brilliant and precise. However, there is insufficient data to study patterns or pattern change by a period. The researcher reconstituted each design element extracted through a portrait by dissolving them into a single symbol by combining them with a single symbol and incorporating them into a combination. The method of reconstruction was designed to redesign all patterns to be digitally implemented, and the uncertain patterns were made a guess by designing. The color painting was based on the composition of the painting, but the colors that were not suitable for modern times were cultivated. Therefore, the researcher hopes that this study will contribute to Korean design by applying it to modern design by recognizing traditional hwamunseok designs.
