이재(頤齋) 황윤석(黃胤錫)의 역(易)과 이수실학(理數實學) 연구 (A research of yi and nature figure silhak on yizhai huang yun xi)

초록

이재는 유학자, 실학자, 박물학자로 지칭된다. 만약 이재를 실학자라고 평가할 경우, 이를 보증할 수 있는 이재의 관념과 사유체계가 있는가라는 질문을 할 수 있다. 본 논문은 이러한 문제의식에서 출발하여 이재를 실학자로 자리매김할 수 있는 관념과 사유체계를 규명하고자 한다.
연구결과, 이재의 사유체계의 특징은 그의 실학은 역수(易數)에 기반하고 있다. 그는 역수의 본원은 1(태일)이고 그 연변(演變)은 3에서 시작되어 60에 이르면 다시 순환반복한다고 여겼다. 60의 운용(運用)은 60갑자(甲子) 책력(冊曆)과 5음(音) 12율(律)의 음악체계에서 가시화되었다. 이재는 이러한 사유체계를 바탕으로 만물에 내재된 수(數)의 원리와 구조를 격물치지(格物致知)의 방법을 통하여 규명하고자 하였다. 이러한 관념은 『기하원본(幾何原本)』에 대하여 묻는 질문에 답한 그의 말에서 엿볼 수 있다. 그는 각 사물에는 도(度)가 있고 도가 있으면 수(數)가 있다고 하였다. 이러한 관념 아래 그는 도와 수가 구현된 구체적 사물과 이를 활용한 방법에 대하여 관심을 가지고 규명하여 활용하고자 하였다. 그 대표적 사례가 시계와 측량이다. 시계는 자명종(自鳴鐘)의 해체와 분석이고 측량은 밭의 면적 구하기이다. 이재는 이처럼 수치(數値)를 활용한 이용후생(利用厚生)의 실천에 노력하였다. 따라서 이재 실학의 사유체계는 수의 본원(本源, 태일)과 연변(演變, 3)에 기초하여 그 원리와 규칙성을 정립(定立)한 후 모든 사물을 관찰하여 그 속에 내재되어 있는 수학적 원리를 탐구하여 수치화한 후 이용하고자 한 것이다. 이재의 사유체계를 도식화하면, 천리(天理)-역수(易數)-도(度)-물리(物理)-수치화(數値化)-이용후생(利用厚生)이다.

영어초록

Yi zhai is referred to as a Confucian scholar, a Silhak scholar, and a naturalist. As evaluating him as a Silhak scholar, some may ask whether there are any ideas, thoughts or systems of thought that can substantiate such an assessment. This paper begins with this question and seeks to clarify these ideas and thought systems that can position Yi Jae as a Silhak scholar.
The study demonstrates that the key feature of Yi Jae's thought system is that his Silhak is based on the principles of yeoksu (易數, the numerical system derived from the Book of Changes). Yi Jae strongly believed that the origin of yeoksu is the number 1 (Taeil, or the Great One), and that its evolution begins at 3, cycles through to 60, and then repeats. The practical application of the number 60 was visualized in the sexagenary cycle used in calendrical systems and in the musical structure of the five notes and twelve scales. Based on this thought system, Yi Jae sought to investigate the principles and structures inherent in all things using the method of gyeokmulchiji (格物致知, the investigation of things to achieve knowledge). His ideas are reflected in his response to a question regarding Elements of Geometry(幾何原本), where he stated that each object has a do, and if there is a measure(度), there is a number(數).
According to this concept, he was interested in the concrete objects in which do and numbers are realized, and the methods for applying them, such as clocks and surveying. The clock example involved disassembling and analyzing an automatic bell (自鳴鐘,jamyeongjong), while surveying concerned calculating the area of fields. Yi Jae made efforts to implement practical measures for the benefit of society using numerical values in this way.
Thus, the foundation of Yi Jae's Silhak thought system lies in the origin (本源,Taeil) and evolution of numbers (演變,3), establishing principles and rules, then observing all things to explore the mathematical principles inherent within them, quantifying those principles, and applying them. The structure of Yi Jae's thought system can be visualized as: Cheonri (heavenly principles) → yeoksu (numerical principles) → do (measure) → mulri (material principles) → quantification → application for the benefit of society (yonghonghusaeng).
