강증산의 생사관에 관한 연구 (A Study on Kang Jeungsan’s Views on Life and Death)

초록

본 연구의 목적은 강증산의 생사관을 분석하여 오늘날 우리의 생사관 정립 및 삶의 문제 해결에 시사점을 구하고자 하는 것이다. 이를 위해 생사관에 관한 선행 연구와 증산 관련 문헌을 조사하고 분석하였다. 신의 존재 해석에 있어 기존의 학설은 대부분 인간의 관점에서 형이상학적 사유였다. 증산의 사유는 인간의 입장에서 불가지의 영역이었던 신과 사후세계에 대해 전지적인 관점을 드러내는 것이 특징이다.
연구의 내용은 다음과 같다.
첫째, 증산의 삶과 죽음에 대한 관점을 정의하고 인간과 신의 존재를 규명한다. 둘째, 불교, 힌두교, 동학의 윤회 사상을 살펴보면서 우주 1년론을 바탕으로 증산의 윤회 사상을 분석하여 궁극적인 인간 존재의 목적을 추론한다. 셋째, ‘무척 잘산다’라는 말에 대한 증산의 해석을 통해 구체적인 삶의 방안을 살펴본다.
이 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다.
첫째, 혼과 넋이 육체에 통합되면서 삶이 시작되고, 육체를 이탈하여 분리되는 것이 죽음이다. 인간이 신명이 되는 것이 1차 죽음, 정혼이 뭉친 정도에 따라 신명의 수명이 결정되고 그 수명이 다하는 것이 2차 죽음이다. 인간은 죽음 이후에 신명이 된다. 인간과 신의 차이는 육체의 소유 여부이다. 둘째, 증산에 의하면 윤회는 우주 1년 중 봄·여름인 선천에 이루어진다. 우주 1년론으로 본 인간 존재의 목적은 우주의 가을 질서가 열리는 후천 개벽기를 맞아 중통인의의 도통을 성취하는 것이다. 셋째, 남에게 원억을 짓지 않고 남 잘되게 하는 상생과 보은을 실천하는 것이 무척 잘 사는 길이다. 마음은 신이 드나드는 통로이고, 생각은 신과 인간을 연결해 주는 고리이다. 선한 것을 본받고 악한 것을 고쳐 나가는 습관이 영혼의 성숙과 삶을 새롭게 만드는 지름길이다.

The dissertation delves into Kang Jeungsan’s perspectives on life and death, with the objective of contextualizing these views for contemporary society and their applicability in addressing present-day challenges. It conducts a thorough review of the existing literature and prior studies concerning perspectives on life and death, with a specific emphasis on the works related to Kang Jeungsan’s thoughts. Unlike conventional theories that approach the existence of spirits from a metaphysical, human-centric perspective, Jeungsan’s thoughts offer a unique, omniscient insight into spirits and the afterlife, realms traditionally considered beyond human understanding.
The study is structured to first define Jeungsan’s views on life and death, elucidating the coexistence and roles of humans and spirits. It then delves into reincarnation theories as seen in Buddhism, Hinduism, and Taoism, using these as a backdrop to analyze Jeungsan’s reincarnation concept, especially in the context of the cosmic year theory. This analysis seeks to infer the ultimate purpose of human existence. Furthermore, the study explores concrete methods for leading a highly fulfilling life, guided by Jeungsan’s interpretation of the phrase “live very well.” This involves understanding his concepts of sangsaeng (“mutual life-saving and life-bettering”) and boeun (“requital of benevalence”).
The findings of the study reveal that life begins with the integration of heavenly soul and earthly soul into the body, and death is the disintegration of this union. The shift from a human state to a spiritual one is described as the ‘first death.’ In this phase, the lifespan of a spirit hinges on how well its essence is consolidated. Eventually, the ‘second death’ takes place when this essence has entirely dissipated. In the post-death phase, beings exist as spirits, differentiated from living humans by the absence of a physical body. According to Jeungsan, reincarnation occurs during the cosmic year’s spring and summer, and the ultimate goal of human existence aligns with achieving perfect enlightenment, particularly during the cosmic autumn. The ideal lifestyle, as per Jeungsan, is to practice sangseang and boeun, fostering benevolence without harm. The mind is posited as a gateway for spirits, and thoughts as the link between spirits and humans, with the cultivation of good habits and rectification of faults being crucial for soul’s maturation and life renewal.
