제품의 디자인 스타일에 따른 2색 배색의 추출과 검증 (Extraction and Verification of Two-Color Combinations by Product Design Style)

초록

제품의 디자인적인 가치를 논할 때 첫인상을 좌우하는 큰 역할을 하는 것이 색채의 조합, 즉, 배색이며 제품 디자인의 감성적 측면을 표현하는데 용이하다. 선행연구에서 제품 디자인을 위해 도출된 감성언어를 실제 제품 디자인에 유용하게 활용되도록 디자인 스타일별로 분류하였다. 본 연구에서는 제품 디자인에 필요한 감성 배색을 디자인 스타일별로 추출하는 것을 목적으로 다음과 같은 과정을 거쳐 연구를 실시하였다.
제품의 디자인 스타일을 표현하는데 어떤 배색이 적절한지 검토하기 위해 색채전문가에 의해 28개의 디자인 스타일별로 3가지 타입의 2색 배색이 제작되었다. 타입 A는 디자인 스타일에 대응되는 색을 주조색으로 한 배색이고 타입 B는 무채색이 주조색인 배색이며 타입 C는 주조색, 보조색 모두 제한 없이 각각의 디자인 스타일의 이미지를 표현한 배색이다. 제작된 배색들이 각 디자인 스타일의 이미지에 적합한지 확인하기 위해 적합성 평가를 실시하여 배색에 대한 평가의 경향과 판단기준을 중심으로 검토해 보았다. 첫째, 28개 디자인 스타일별 3가지 타입에서 추출된 모든 배색은 적합성 평가치의 평균으로 판단한 결과 전체적으로 평가치의 중성점(中性点)보다 높았으므로 각 디자인 스타일을 적합하게 표현한 것으로 판단되었다. 둘째, 적합성 평가에서 각 타입의 배색을 어느 정도 식별했느냐를 평가치의 표준편차를 기준으로 판단했을 때 각 디자인 스타일을 가장 적합하게 표현한 것은 타입 C라고 판단되었다. 셋째, 감성 배색에 대한 적합성 평가 시의 참가자의 판단기준을 중심으로 검토해 본 결과 각 디자인 스타일별 배색에 대한 식별성과 판단의 일의성(一意性)과는 밀접한 관련이 있다는 점이 확인되었다. 식별성이 상대적으로 낮았던 타입 A는 판단의 일의성도 낮아 평가 시 복잡한 판단기준이 원인으로 작용했다는 점이 시사되었다.
디자인 스타일별로 추출된 2색 배색은 전체적으로 디자인 스타일의 이미지를 양호하게 표현하였다. 그 중에서 특히 타입 C의 주조색, 보조색 모두 특정 색의 지정 없이 제작된 배색이 가장 안정된 평가 경향을 보였으며 디자인 스타일의 이미지를 적절히 표현한 배색으로 판단되었다.

determining the design value of products, color combinations play a pivotal role in creating first impression, and can effectively reveal the sensibility aspect of product design. Sensibility words from previous studies that have been selected for product design were classified based on design style so that they can be directly applied for actual product design. This study aimed to extract sensibility color combinations demanded in product design through the following procedures.
To investigate what type of color combination would effectively convey the design style of a product, 3 types of two-color combinations for 28 respective design styles were generated by color specialists. Type A is a color combination with a dominant color corresponding to a design style. Type B contains an achromatic dominant color, and Type C is an expression of one’s own style without constraints on dominant or control colors. A suitability evaluation was conducted on the color combinations to examine whether the images were appropriate for the design style. We analyzed evaluation tendencies and judgment criteria for color combinations. Firstly, it was identified that all the color combinations were properly representing each design style as suitability evaluation values of the sensibility color combinations were higher than the overall mean. Secondly, when the discrimination level in the suitability evaluation was determined using standard deviation of the evaluation values, Type C was identified as the most stable representation of design styles. Thirdly, analysis on participants’ judgment criteria in the suitability evaluation revealed a correlation between discrimination levels for color combinations in each style and unique judgments. In addition, Type A with relatively low discrimination level also showed fewer unique judgments suggesting the possible contribution of complicated judgment criteria.
Two-color combinations extracted based on design styles were effective in expressing the overall design style image. Especially, Type C color combinations with no constraints on dominant or control colors exhibited the most stable evaluation tendencies, and can be identified as the most appropriate representation of a design style image.
