    초록

The Saturday Evening Post was a weekly magazine that boasted the largest circulation in the United States during the first half of the twentieth century. From its cover to the all illustrations within, this magazine was full of graphic art. Among the large number of artists that were in charge of creating the covers for the Post, Norman Rockwell (1894-1978) stood unchallenged and was the most loved by both editors and readers. The images from Norman Rockwell’s covers consistently worked to reinforce what was like to live the ‘American Life,’ and readers extolled these visions of America and the realistic method of expression used to create these images. The Post’s realism put into shape within its images of daily life the symbolic significance of ‘Americanism.’
Norman Rockwell began to work for the Saturday Evening Post on a regular basis during the 1920s. Despite the social upheavals during the 1920s, Norman Rockwell’s cover art for the Saturday Evening Post depicted American society as being harmonious and consistent. Norman Rockwell’s romantic reminiscences of the ‘good old times’ reassured the public at large that everything was fine. Norman Rockwell developed an extremely efficient visual language for the general public using a moderate and comprehensible method that made it easy for them to understand. By means of the realistic representation of humorous episodes, the cover art of the Post was able to satisfy the tastes of the American middlebrows. This cover art not only corresponded with the dominant tastes of the day but also gave a hint to the larger truth of the American society. To meet the needs of the times, the Saturday Evening Post intended to instill in the American public an idea of ‘Americanism’ that harbored a practical meaning. This intention was achieved by infusing a strong sense of belonging into American individuals. For them, the ‘community of United States’ was no more than an ‘expanded family’ and both personal success and public interest became recognized as being inseparable from each other.
