    초록

The newly inaugurated Republic of Korea (R. O. K. hereafter), facing security crisis, had to stabilize itself and realize its statehood by producing its kukmin(國民) and mobilizing the political subject to its agendas. In so doing, the R. O. K. encountered not a few theoretical and practical predicaments such as the contradiction between the constitutional identification of kukmin as a R. O. K. sovereign and the actual location of kukmin as the led. With this in mind, this essay deals with the way the R. O. K. appropriated the images of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (D. P. R. K. hereafter) constructed by the R. O. K. and its elites to its agenda of the production of R. O. K. kukmin, what was the ideal image of the kukmin the R. O. K. suggested to the South Korean people, and what efforts were made by the state for the transformation of the South Korean people into R. O. K. kukmin.
The incipient R. O. K. and its elites represented North Korea as a Lost Land and the D. P. R. K. as a National Other in terms of nationalism. Also, they fashioned the images of the D. P. R. K. as what was threatening to cost South Korean residents' lives and at the same time destroy all of their belongings. This imagination was geared to let South Korean people fear the North Korean polity and hereby develop their sense of crisis, viz. the sense of real and/or potential victimhood. Based upon this machination, the R. O. K. urged South Korean people to take part in its own anti-D. P. R. K campaign. At the same time, the polity, building an icon such as Ten Human Bombs (yukt'an sibyongsa, 肉彈十勇士), tried its best to transform them into warrior-kukmin. This meant that South Korean people were asked to go out to do the battles of all kinds, whether in the battlefield of the forefront or in the factory of the rear, and relinquish not only their physical bodies but also all the things privately cherished such as their own families for the cause of the R. O. K..
What has been explained so far shows that R. O. K.-made images of the D. P. R. K., relating and appropriating themselves to the state project of kumkin production, worked as materials for the construction of warrior-kukmin. This implies that the representation of Other were prerequisite to the construction of political subject and that the Other-making determined the subjectivization and vice versa. The above explanation tells us that warrior-kukmin discourses offered the R. O. K. ideational and cultural resources available to the political entity. That is, the discourses provided the state with the resources which would make it possible for the political entity to secure and mobilize man power for the entity in the crisis of security while transforming the humans into R. O. K. kukmin. Also, the discourse gave the state the materials which would solve its contemporary conundrums such as the conflicting identifications of kukmin, and which could be used to present the state as a modern national and democratic polity.
