초록

본고에서는 지봉 이수광의 상서학을 분석하는 동시에 그의 주장이 조선 상서학에서 점하는 위상과 맥락을 진단하기 위하여 그와 관련된 조선 전반의 상서학 이론을 비교 대조해 보았다. 이수광의 『서경』에 대한 견해는 『芝峯類說』 <經書部 一> 「書經」에서 볼 수 있다. 이수광의 상서학은 당시까지 집적된 조선의 상서학을 토대로 삼고 후대 상서학의 전개에 상당한 영향을 끼쳤다는 점에서 위상을 갖는다. 이수광은 중국 뿐 아니라 우리나라에서도 가장 영향력이 큰 채침의 『서집전』의 권위에 도전하였으니, 이는 우리나라 경학사의 형성과 전개 과정에서 큰 역할을 했다고 평가할 수 있다. 이수광은 자신의 상서학을 별도의 저술로 만들지 않고 類書의 일부로 구성하였으니, 유서라는 형식이 다양한 견해의 표출에 유리하다고 판단한 것이다. 이로써 이수광의 『지봉유설』이 기존의 상식적 지식의 단순 집적보다는 고루한 인식의 틀을 깨고 회의를 제기하며 대안을 제시하는 진취적 성향을 갖고 있다는 사실을 알 수 있다.
이수광의 상서학은 『書集傳』의 자구 풀이에 반론을 제기하거나 모호하게 처리된 자구 풀이를 선명하게 설명하는 데에 집중되어 있다. 이수광이 『지봉유설』 전반에서 보여준 지식의 과감한 선정과 수록 태도가 경학 분야에서도 적용되었으니, 기존 조선 학계에서 보지 못한 새로운 상서학이 이수광에 의하여 소개되었다는 점에서 의의가 있다.
이수광이 『서집전』의 자구 풀이에 대해 異論을 전개할 때 자신의 주장을 直敍하는 방법을 사용하기도 하였지만 당시로서는 최신 이론이라고 할 수 있는 楊愼이나 張居正 등의 주장을 인용하는 방법을 채택하기도 하였다.
상서학의 논란거리 중 하나는 次序와 관련된 것인데, 채침은 「武成」의 차서에 문제가 있다고 여기고 ‘今考定武成’을 만들었다. 이를 두고 조선의 경학계에서 논란이 전개되었다. 이수광은 洪邁의 주장을 인용하면서 「洪範」과 「武成」의 재편차를 주장하였다.
『서경』이 산문의 남상으로 간주되는 만큼 이수광도 문학적 관점에서 『서경』에서 유래된 문체에 대한 견해를 제시하였다. 대체로 조선의 문학가들은 『서경』에서 유래된 문체를 절대적 모범으로 극찬하였지만, 이수광은 문체가 사회의 변화와 역사적 상황을 반영하여 발생한다는 견해를 표명하였다. 이와 같이 이수광은 『서경』의 합리적 해석과 지식의 확장을 위해 다양한 문헌적 근거를 수집 소개하고 자신의 독자적 해석을 제시함으로써 조선 상서학의 발전에 기여하였다는 의의가 있다.

영어초록

In this paper, I analyzed the Jibong(芝峯) Lee Su-kwang(李睟光)’s Sangseohak(尙書學), at the same time, in order to diagnose the status and context of his claim in the Joseon Dynasty’s Sangseohak, I compared and contrasted the theories of the whole Joseon Dynasty’s Sangseohak related to it. Lee Su-kwang’s view of 『Seogyeong(書經)』 could be seen in 『Jibong-yuseol(芝峯類說)』 <Department of the Confucian classics 1(經書部 一)> 「Seogyeong(書經)」. Lee Su-kwang’s Sangseohak was based on the Joseon Dynasty’s Sangseohak, which had been accumulated until that time, and it had a considerable influence on the development of the later Sangseohak. He challenged authority of Chae-chim’s 『Seojibjeon(書集傳)』 which had been the most influential in Korea, not only in China, so this can be regarded as having played a major role in the formation and development process of the Korean study of Confucianism. And he did not make his Sangseohak as a separate writing, but composed as a part of Encyclopedic Collections. It was judged that the form of Encyclopedic Collections was advantageous for the expression of various views. Thus, it can be found that Lee Su-kwang’s 『Jibong-yuseol』 had a progressive knowledge orientation that breaks the framework of antiquated recognition and raises doubts and suggests alternatives rather than simple summation of existing common knowledge.
Lee Su-kwang’s Sangseohak was focused on making a counterargument against the interpretation of words and phrases and explaining clearly the ambiguity of it in 『Seojibjeon(書集傳)』. His bold selection and recording attitude of the knowledge presented in 『Jibong-yuseol』 were also applied in the field of the study of Confucianism, so it is meaningful that Lee Su-kwang introduced new Sangseohak which was not seen in the existing Joseon academic world.
Lee Su-kwang used the method of describing his argument directly when he developed different theory about the interpretation of words and phrases in 『Seojibjeon』, but he adopted the method of citing the opinion of Ming Dynasty Yang-sin(楊愼) or Jang geo-jeong(張居正) which was the latest theories about that time.
One of the controversial aspects of the Sangseohak is related to order. Chae-chim thought that there was a problem with order of the 「Museong(武成)」 and made the ‘Geumgojeongmuseong(今考定武成)’. A controversy arose in the field of the study of Confucianism. Lee Su-kwang cited the opinion of Hong-mae(洪邁) and claimed the reorganization of the 「Hongbeom(洪範)」 and the 「Museong(武成)」.
As 『Seogyeong(書經)』 is considered as the origin of the prose, Lee Su-kwang also suggested the viewpoint about the style derived from 『Seogyeong』 in terms of literature. In general, the literary scholars of the Joseon Dynasty highly praised the style derived from 『Seogyeong』 as an absolute example, but he expressed the view that the style occurred in social changes and historical situations. Thus, it is meaningful that he contributed to the development of the Joseon Dynasty’s Sangseohak by collecting and introducing various literature bases for rational interpretation of 『Seogyeong』 and expansion of knowledge, and presenting his own interpretation.
