글쓰기 능력 신장을 위한 교수 모형 연구 - 역사의 한 상황을 화제 삼은 토의 및 토론 수행을 중심으로 (A Teaching Model for Developing Higher Writing Ability - Centering on Discussion with Situations as Topics)

초록

글쓰기는 학습자들의 생각하는 힘을 기르게 할 목적으로 실행된다. 그러므로 학습자들이 글을 쓰는 과정에서 나와 세계에 대한 이해를 바탕으로 인식 확장을 꾀할 수 있어야 글쓰기 교육 고유의 의미를 살릴 수 있다. 이런 맥락에서 우리 수업에서는 학습자들이 공감할 수 있고 다가가기 쉬운 역사의 한 상황을 화제 삼고, 사유의 폭을 넓힐 수 있도록 교실 환경에 변화를 줬다. 그동안 생각만 했던 ‘광주민주화운동’을 화제 삼아 역사 속 인물을 직접 몸으로 느껴보도록 역할을 맡게 하고, 역사의 한 현장을 투박하게나마 재현한 것이다.
A대학교 교양필수 과목 <사고와 표현1> 강의 중에 수강생 33명을 대상으로 위의 내용을 골자로 한 교수 모형을 적용한 결과 이 교수법이 글쓰기 능력 신장에 일정한 기여를 할 수 있다는 사실을 입증할 수 있었다. 필자가 개발한 교수 모형의 교육적 효과 및 의의는 다음과 같이 설명할 수 있다.
첫째, 이 교수 모형은 역사를 화제 삼은 토론 및 글쓰기 수업을 할 때 쉽게 적용할 수 있게 설계한 것으로, 역사에 대한 인식 확장 및 비판적 사고 능력 신장에 도움되리라 본다. 역사의 한 상황을 포착해 토의 및 토론 수업을 하는 교수 모형은 종래 연구에서 찾기 어려운 새로운 시도이기에 그 의의를 찾을 수 있겠다.
둘째, 대학 현장에 적용할 수 있는 과정 중심 글쓰기의 새로운 모형을 제시했다는 점에서 의의를 찾을 수 있겠다. 본 교수자는 글쓰기 능력을 신장 시킬 수 있는 수업을 하되 ‘매트릭스 작성’, ‘인물 행적을 조사해 조원들에게 소개하기’, ‘교실 환경 바꾸기’ 등 다양한 과정을 거치도록 교수 모형을 설계했다. 이를 통해 학습자들이 글쓰기에 대한 부담을 떨치고 흥미를 느끼며 글을 쓸 수 있게 이끌었다.
셋째, ‘토의 매트릭스’를 실제 수업에 도입해 교육효과를 검증한 점을 의의로 꼽을 수 있겠다. ‘토의 매트릭스’는 토의 세부 주제별로 참석자들의 의견을 수렴할 수 있도록 토의 공간을 시각적으로 표현한 양식으로 최근에 토의 활성화를 위해 직장 및 학교에서 많이 이용하고 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고 아직 교육 효과를 검증한 연구는 찾기 어렵다는 점에서 ‘매트릭스’를 활용한 토의 수업의 교육효과가 높다는 사실을 확인한 점은 성과라 할 수 있겠다.
이 논문의 성과가 고정된 교실에서 정형화된 글쓰기 지도에 한계를 느끼는 교수자들이 활로를 찾는데 도움되기를 바란다.

영어초록

Writing education is designed to increase a student's thinking power. Therefore, when students can expand their recognition based on an understanding of themselves and the world in the process of writing, the peculiar meaning of writing education can be achieved. In this context, this writing program used dramatic situations in history which students can sympathize with, and which are easily accessible, and made changes to the classroom environment to allow a wider range of thinking. Gwangju Democratic Movement was presented as a topic with which students could feel and have access to people in history directly and represent a scene from history even roughly.
In the <Thinking and Expression 1>, an a required subject in liberal arts at University A, a teaching model with the content presented above was applied to 33 students and it was discovered that this teaching program can contribute to higher thinking power and writing ability. Educational effects and the meaning for the teaching model presented in this study are explained as follows: First, as this teaching model was designed to be easily applied for discussions on history in the writing program, it is suggested that it would be helpful for higher perceptions on history and improved critical thinking power.
In particular, this study has meaning in that the teaching model of discussion on a dramatic situation in history is a new and a difficult attempt that has not been made in previous studies.
Second, this study also has meaning in that it presented a new model for process-oriented writing which can be applied in university education. This teaching model was designed to have diverse processes in a program to improve writing ability. This study made dynamic interventions in this teaching model as follows: matrix formation, introducing a person's achievements and changing the classroom environment. Through these interventions, students were led to have less of a burden in writing, and have an interest in it. As students went through this process, they could develop thinking power and their writing ability improved. Third, this program has meaning in that it introduced a ‘discussion matrix’ in the actual classes and verified its educational effect. A ‘Discussion matrix’ is a form where the space of a discussion is visually expressed to converge participants' opinions according to the specific topics and it has been intensively used at jobs and schools for active discussion. However, as there have been few studies that verified its educational effects, this study has meaning in that it confirmed the high educational effect of a discussion program using the matrix.
It is hoped that this study would be helpful for teachers who feel limits in standardized writing programs to find a more effective method.
