영화 <뻐꾸기 둥지 위로 날아간 새>의 삼원론적 분석 - 보글러의 캐릭터분석 이론과의 비교를 중심으로 - (Triorigin-Theory Analysis of the Movie - Focused on Comparison with Christopher Vogler’s Theory of Character Archetype -)

초록

본 글은 영화 <뻐꾸기 둥지 위로 날아간 새>를 삼원론으로 분석한 글이다. 삼원이란 세상의 근본요소를 세 가지의 힘으로 보는 원형적 개념이다. 그리고 삼원 캐릭터이론은 이러한 삼원적 분류를 통해 영화 캐릭터를 분석하고 해석하고자 하는 이론이라고 할 수 있다. 기존의 음양론이 음과 양이라는 두 가지의 요소로 세상을 해석한다면, 삼원론은 변코자 하는 힘인 헤테로(Hetero), 변치않고자 하는 힘인 호모(Homo), 존재케 하는 힘인 뉴트로(Neutro)라는 세 가지 개념으로 세상을 해석한다. 필자는 이 개념을 영화 캐릭터 분석의 도구로 활용하였다.
미셸 푸코가 잘 밝혀 주었듯이, 감옥·병원·학교는 감시와 억압의 공간이다. 본영화는 정신병원을 공간적 배경으로 하고 있다. 주인공 맥머피는 헤테로 성향의캐릭터로서 본래 제멋대로 하려는 의지가 강한 인물이다. 호모 공간인 정신병원의구성원들은 이를 감시와 처벌을 통해 길들이려고 한다. 영화는 이러한 갈등과 충돌을통해 인간의 자유로움을 이야기하고자 하는 것이다. 그러므로 정신병원을 탈출하려는 헤테로적 시도를 “뻐꾸기 둥지 위로 날아간 새”로 볼 수 있다. 영화에서 뻐꾸기둥지 위로 날아간 새는 정신병원 탈출을 시도한 맥머피와 실제로 탈출에 성공한추장으로 볼 수 있다.
이처럼 호모의 억압과 처벌에 반항하여 융통성과 평화를 찾으려는 힘은 비록 헤테로적인 것이지만, 그것은 결국 부조리한 상황을 조화롭게 균형잡고자 하는 뉴트로적가치라고 정의할 수 있다. 그런 점에서 영화에서 주인공 맥머피는 결국 마지막 단계에서는 뉴트로 캐릭터가 되는 것이다. 물론 그 뉴트로는 죽음(맥머피) 또는 탈출(추장)을 통해 획득된 것이다. 특히 맥머피는 죽음을 통해서 획득되었다는 점에서 비극적이며, 그만큼 관객들에게 ‘인간의 자유’라는 뉴트로적 가치관의 문제 의식을 강력하게 던져준다고 할 수 있다.
본 글에서는 대상 영화를 보글러의 캐릭터 원형이론으로도 분석한 후 그 한계를지적하였다. 첫째는 캐릭터 원형 8가지의 위상이 동일하지 않다는 점, 둘째는 시간의 변화에 따른 구조적 이해에 한계를 갖는다는 점, 셋째는 가장 중요한 본질이라고할 수 있는 것으로 작품의 메시지 추출이 쉽지 않다는 점을 지적하였다. 반면 삼원캐릭터 분석에서는 이 점을 효율적으로 제시할 수 있다는 점을 밝혔다.

영어초록

This study attempted to make a triogirn-theory analysis of the movie <One flew over the cuckoo's nest>. Triorigin is a archetypical concept that views the fundamental element of the world as three forces. And the theory of triorigin character can be said to be a theory that attempts to analyze and interpret the characters of the movie through this triorigin classification. If the existing theory of Yin and Yang interprets the world by two elements of yin and yang, the theory of triorigin interprets the world by three concepts of Hetero·Homo·Neutro. This study used this concept as the instrument for analysis of movie characters.
As Michel Foucault made it very clear, the prison·hospital·school are the space of Homo that most suppresses the disposition of free Hetero. The main stage of this movie is the insane asylum. The protagonist McMurphy is a character with the disposition of Hetero, which is a force of a strong will to make his own way. So the members of the insane asylum, the space of Homo, attempts to tame him with monitoring and punishment. This movie attempts to describe the freedom of the human being through this collision.
Therefore, the Hetero attempting to escape from the insane asylum can be seen as the “one that flew over the cuckoo's nest”. In this movie, the one that flew over the cuckoo's nest can be seen as the chieftain that actually escaped with McMurphy attempting to escape from the insane asylum.
Like this, the force attempting to find out flexibility and peace by offering resistance to the suppression and punishment of Homo may be of Hetero, which can be defined as the value of Neutro that attempts to balance the irregular situation harmoniously. In this sense, the protagonist McMurphy in this movie is a character of Neutro at length. It is natural that this Neutro is obtained through death(McMurphy) or escape(chieftain). Especially, it is tragic in that McMurphy obtained it through death, which can be said to cast a problem of the Neutro-value view of the 'human freedom' to the audience as much.
This study analyzed this movie on the basis of Christopher Vogler's Theory of Character Archetype and pointed out its limitation and attempted to make its comparison with the theory of triorigin character. First, it was pointed out that eight phases of character archetype are not identical. Second, it was pointed out that Christopher Vogler's Theory of Character Archetype has some limitation in a structual understanding of the character with the change of time. Third, it was pointed out that the theory has difficulty in extracting the message of the most important work. On the other hand, it was made clear that the theory of triorigin character analysis can efficiently present this point.
