초록

이 글에서는 18세기 초반 작품인 <유씨삼대록(劉氏三代錄)>을 대상으로 하여, 공주혼과는 다른, 상층 여성의 늑혼(勒婚) 양상과 그 의미를 논의하고자 한다. 작품에서 설초벽과 왕씨는 서로 다른 늑혼 양상을 보이는데, 한쪽은 재주가 뛰어나며 주체적인 여성의 늑혼을, 또 다른 한쪽은 자질을 포함하여 모든 것이 약간 부족한 여성의 늑혼을 보여준다. 두 여성들을 통한 늑혼의 의미는 크게 세 가지이다. 첫째, 황제에 대한 이중적 이미지가 드러난다. 둘째, 늑혼 시 딸의 잘못을 징치하는 선인형 친정아버지상이 나타난다. 셋째, 늑혼으로 들어온 여성을 외모로 구별짓기를 하고 있는데 이것으로 작품이 어떠한 여성 인물을 경계했는지 추측할 수 있다.
이를 바탕으로 작품의 독자층이 상층 여성 늑혼을 공주혼과 비교해 어떻게 받아들였을지 살피겠다. 첫째, 상층 여성 늑혼에서는 공주혼에 비해 힘의 논리가 어느 정도 약화된다. 독자층은 긴장감을 덜 느끼며 공주혼과 같이 흥미소로 읽었을 것이다. 둘째, 공주혼에서는 악인형 여성 인물을 끝내는 진양공주가 덕으로 교화해 받아들이나 상층 여성 늑혼에서는 선택적으로 여성 인물을 포용한다. 이는 늑혼을 어떤 인물이 먼저 발화하고 이끄는가와 관련되는데 독자층은 상층 여성 늑혼에서도 역시 혼사를 주도하는 여성을 긍정적으로 보지 않았다. 셋째, 여성 인물의 성격을 보면 진양공주는 침묵하는 인물이지만 설초벽이나 왕씨는 자신의 생각을 표현하는 인물들이다. 아마도 독자층은 진양공주처럼 침묵의 태도를 보이는 것을 더 긍정적으로 여겼을 것이다.
마지막으로 <유씨삼대록>은 다른 국문장편소설과는 달리 황제의 명으로 이루어진 늑혼을 부정적으로 보지 않았다. 작품에서는 설초벽과 왕씨가 결국 자손을 낳는 것으로 끝나며, 같은 늑혼을 하는 진양공주 역시 매우 이상적인 인물로 그려진다. 이는 상층뿐만 아니라 당대 왕실과도 연관되었던 향유층의 특징에 기인한다. 즉 서술자와 향유층 모두 늑혼에 대해 우호적인 시선을 두었다는 것을 유추할 수 있다.

영어초록

This study would discuss the aspects and meanings of upper-class female characters’ marriage by force, different from princess marriage with Yussisamdaerok, a work of the early 18th century. In the work, Seol Cho-byeok and Mrs. Wang show different aspects of marriage by force, and the one shows an overly subjective woman’s marriage by force while the other shows that of a woman who lacks in everything a little bit, including appearance. The meanings of marriage by force through the two women can be divided into three. First, the dual image of the Emperor appears. Second, the image of a virtuous father who asks for forgiveness for his daughter’s mistake appears. Third, the woman who came in by marriage by force was distinguished by her appearance, and accordingly, we can guess against what female characters precautions were taken in the work.
Then, it is necessary to examine how the class of readers of Yussisamdaerok accepted such upper-class female characters’ marriage by force as compared to princess marriage. First, in upper-class female characters’ marriage by force, the vertical force between the lord and the vassal relatively stand out less as compared to princess marriage. In that the logic of power was weakened to some extent, the class of readers might feel the tension less and read that as an interesting element. Second, in the princess marriage of the work, Princess Jinyang, who brought a vicious female character to an end, accepted it as reformed by virtue; however, in upper-class female character’s marriage by force selectively embraces the female character. This is related to which female character speaks of and lead marriage by force first. Third, as for the female characters’ personalities, Princess Jinyang was a silent character; however, Seol Cho-byeok or Mrs. Wang were characters who expressed her thoughts. Thus, it seems that the class of readers was very likely to think of showing a silent attitude like Princess Jinyang to be more positive.
Lastly, Yussisamdaerok has a positive view of marriage by force by the will of the Emperor, unlike other Korean full-length novels. The work ends with the scene in which Seol Cho-byeok and Mrs. Wang gave birth to descendants at last, and Princess Jinyang who also got married by force is described as a very idealistic person, too. This is because of the characteristic of the class of enjoyment, which was related to the royal family of the times as well as the upper class. In other words, it is inferred that both the narrator and the class of readers had a somewhat positive view of marriage by force.
