삼일운동과 기독 여성의 역할 (March 1st Movement and the Role of Christian Women)

초록

삼일운동은 천도교, 기독교, 불교 등의 종교단체에 의한 민족대연합전선이 이루어졌다. 그 중에서 기독교는 태동단계, 준비단계, 확대단계 등 삼일운동의 전 과정에서 크게 기여한 바 있다. 이는 삼일운동의 준비과정에서 핵심적인 역할을 하였던 민족대표 서명자 33인 가운데 16인이 기독교인이었다는 사실에서 명백하게 드러난다. 본고는 삼일운동에서 기독교의 역할에 주목하면서도 특별히 기독여성의 역할에 초점을 맞추고자 한다.
삼일운동에서의 기독여성의 역할을 파악하기 위해 본고의 연구방법은 먼저 당시에 만세시위 현장의 일선에서 기독여성들을 체포하고 심문한 헌병대의 문서와 검찰진술서 및 판결문을 조사하였다. 그리고 이 문서들을 지역별로 정리하여 기독여성들의 삼일운동 참여 상황을 밝히고 그 의미를 해석하려고 하였다.
이를 토대로 확인된 삼일운동에 있어서의 기독여성들의 역할은, 1) 삼일운동 준비단계의 역할, 2) 만세시위에서의 역할, 3) 결사에 의한 조직적 활동 등이었다. 삼일운동이 발발했던 1919년 당시 대다수의 여성은 유교적 봉건질서에서 짓눌린 존재였다. 그러나 비록 소수였지만 깨어있는 여성들은 일제의 감시와 위협에도 불구하고 조국의 국권회복과 독립에 강한 의지를 천명하였다. 삼일운동에서 기독여성은 준비단계에서부터 비밀결사 활동에 이르기까지 혁혁한 공헌을 했다고 말할 수 있다. 당시의 사회적 여건으로 여성의 적극적인 활약은 이례적인 일이었다. 삼일운동에 있어서 일반여성에 비해 기독여성의 활동이 두드러질 수 있었던 것은 몇 가지 이유를 꼽을 수 있다. 첫째, 헌병경찰제의 무단통치하에서 항일독립운동을 전개하는 데는 비밀활동과 결속력이 필수적이라고 말할 수 있다. 그런데 기독교의 경우 일찍부터 여성신도조직이 매우 발달되어 있었던 것이다. 둘째, 근대지식여성의 대부분이 기독교계 사립학교 출신이라는 점이다. 기독교계 여학교의 졸업생과 재학생이 유기적인 관계를 맺으면서, 삼일운동의 중추적인 역할을 할 수 있었다. 셋째, 삼일운동의 배경이 되기도 하는 조선총독부의 기독교 탄압에도 이유가 있다고 말할 수 있다. 기독교에 대한 탄압은 자연히 기독교인의 반발을 불러 일으켰다. 그리고 당시 한국 기독교는 여성신도가 다수를 점하고 있었다. 그래서 기독여성의 항일의식은 일반여성의 그것보다 투철했을 것이다. 이와 같은 상황에서 기독여성은 일반여성보다 더 적극적으로 삼일운동에 참가할 수 있었던 것으로 생각된다.

영어초록

The March 1st Movement was led by the National United Front which such religious groups as Chendokyo, Christianity and Buddhism had formed. Among them, Christianity was deeply involved in the total process of the Movement, in every stage of its beginning, preparation and expansion. As a matter of fact, it is evident that sixteen among thirty-three signers of the Movement who played the most important role in the preparation of the Movement were Christians.
This paper is to examine the role of Christianity in the March 1st Movement, particularly focusing on the role of Christian women. To summarize, the role of Christian women in the March 1st Movement can be understood firstly in their role in the stage of preparing the Movement, and secondly in their role in the demonstration of Manse(Hurray) campaign, and thirdly in their systematic activities as an association.
Most of the Korean women had lived as oppressed beings under the Confucian feudal system at the time when the March 1st Movement took place in 1919. But even a few Korean women were so much enlightened to demonstrate their strong will to restore the national sovereignty and to regain its independence, despite the surveillance and threatening of the imperial Japan. In the Movement, they not only participated in the stage of its preparation, but they made brilliant achievements in secret organizations. Considering the social conditions of the days, their remarkable activities as women were extraordinary. I found that there are several reasons that the activities of Christian women were more striking than others in the March 1st Movement. First, it was indispensable for them to have a secret organization and solidarity so as to fight against Japan for independence under the rule of the Japanese military police. And in the case of Christian women, they had already developed such secret organizations of believers from the beginning. Second, most of the modern educated women were graduates from the Christian private schools. Both the graduates of the Christian schools and the students of such schools were so organically related as to play the key role in the Movement. Third, the oppression of the Japanese Government General of Korea against Christianity was the immediate cause of the Movement, and it naturally brought about the resistance among Christians. And at that time the majority of Korean Christians was female. Thus, the anti-Japan spirit among Christan women must have been stronger than others. With these reasons, I consider that Christian women were far more active in participating in the March 1st Movement than others.
