초록

본고는 월암(月巖) 최일하(崔一河, 1762~1840)가 조선 후기 남원 지역의 향촌사대부로서 어떤 삶을 살았으며, 그 삶의 근간인 의식 지향의 연원이 무엇이었는지를 살펴보고자 한다.
17세기 후반 이래 서울과 그 주변 도시의 경제적인 번화함과 동질적 사대부집단의 문화적 활력은 기타 지역의 그것과는 비교가 되지 않을 만큼 상당한 것이었다. 이들은 인맥과 학맥으로 연결되어 학문과 문학의 커다란 영역을 형성하고 있었다. 그러나 소위 이들 주류에 포함되지 않은 수많은 비주류 사대부, 그 중에서도 특히 서울과 근기(近畿)가 아닌 향촌의 경우 그 격차는 현실적으로 더욱 벌어질 수밖에 없다.
최일하 역시 중앙에 진출하지 못한 향촌사대부 중 한 명으로, 향촌사대부의 입장에서 그의 삶을 조명하는 작업은 당시 향촌에서 사대부들의 문학적‧문화적 동향, 서울과 근기 외에 대다수의 일반적 사대부의 삶 등을 파악하는 측면에서 의미가 있다. 이는 문학사에서 흔히 언급되는 소위 ‘문제적’ 인물은 아닐지 몰라도 주류 사대부들을 제외한 대다수의 범상한 사대부들의 ‘일상’을 밝히고자 한다.
향촌사대부로서 그의 삶은 지역공동체의 교화에 대한 의지로 갈음할 수 있다. 그는 풍속의 회복을 위한 방법으로 후학들에 대한 교육을 강조했으며, 이를 위해서는 자신을 포함한 부로(父老)들의 역할이 중요함을 역설했다. 그가 말한 부로들은 관리들이 아닌 자신과 같은 향촌사대부일 것이다. 또한 풍속 회복을 위한 방안으로는 복고(復古)를 제시하며, 전현(前賢)들의 자취를 살피고, 유풍(遺風)을 중시했다.
이러한 지역공동체의 교화를 위한 일련의 제안들은 비록 출사를 통해 정치적으로 치민(治民)할 수는 없는 상황에서 스스로를 사대부이자 유자(儒者)로서 존재할 수 있게 해주는 명분이자 원동력이 되었던 것으로 보인다. 특히 관(官)에서의 관점이 아닌 일상에서 보다 핍진하게 풍속을 체감할 수 있었던 입장에서 더욱 책임감을 느꼈기 때문으로 보인다.
이러한 향촌사대부로서의 정체성과 의식지향의 발로는 부친인 최곤의 영향이 컸다. 최곤의 정치적 사상의 핵심으로 보이는 소회 8조 중 제1조 풍속을 바르게 하라[正風俗]와 제2조 학교를 일으켜라[興學校]는 최일하가 평생 남원에서 보였던 행적들과 직결되며, 그의 사상적 기반이 되었던 것으로 판단된다.

Joseon period in the Namwon region, with a focus on delving into the consciousness direction underpinnings that underlay his existence. During the late 17th century, the economic and cultural dynamism of the elite class in Seoul and its environs stood in stark contrast to other regions. The elite forged extensive networks based on social affiliations and educational backgrounds, establishing a flourishing domain of erudition and literary expression. Conversely, numerous non-elite landlords, particularly those in rural settings, found themselves excluded from this mainstream cultural sphere, leading to a pronounced divergence between these two social strata.
Choi Il-ha(崔一河), as one of the rural landlords who failed to attain recognition at the central level, assumes a crucial role in elucidating the literary and cultural trends of rural landlords during that era and shedding light on the quotidian experiences of the majority of ordinary landlords residing beyond Seoul and its vicinity. While he may not emerge as a "contentious" figure in the annals of literary history, an investigation into his life provides valuable insights into the everyday realities of typical landlords, distinct from the elite echelon.
As a rural landlord, Choi Il-ha's life can be interpreted as being driven by a resolute commitment to enlightening the local community. He accentuated the significance of education for future generations as a means of revitalizing traditional customs and values. To this end, he advocated the pivotal role played by the community's elders, encompassing individuals like himself, over reliance on government officials. Additionally, he proposed a return to past practices as a mechanism for reviving cherished traditions, examining the precedents set by esteemed sages, and placing a premium on the preservation of age-old customs.
These proposals aimed at communal enlightenment conferred upon him the moral justification and impetus to embody the roles of both landlord and Confucian scholar, even in the absence of direct political power through governmental service. His sense of responsibility was heightened as he keenly perceived the importance of upholding proper customs in everyday life, transcending a mere official standpoint.
Choi Il-ha's identity as a rural landlord and the roots of his consciousness direction can be traced back to the influence of his father, Choi Gon. The core political ideals espoused by his father, as evident in the first and second articles of the Thoughts 8 Articles, namely "Uphold Proper Customs" and "Establish Schools," appear to have significantly shaped Choi Il-ha's life and formed the bedrock of his philosophical convictions throughout his lifetime, as exemplified by his actions and conduct in Namwon.
