독일로 이주한 한인 1, 2세대의 생애발달경험에 관한 재구성 연구: 삶의 전략을 중심으로 (A Study on the Reconstruction of Biographical Development of the First and Second Generations of Korean Migrants to Germany: Centering around their Living Strategy)

초록

본 연구에서는 독일로 이주한 한인 1세대와 2세대의 생애발달경험을 통해 드러나는 삶의 전략을 재구성하였다. 이를 위해 각 사례의 생애사로부터 발견된 삶의 전략구조를 자원과 결핍 이론으로 숨겨진 의미를 심도 있게 탐색(해석)하는 ‘재구성연구방법’을 활용하였다. 1세대들의 경우 그들의 개인적·사회적 자원의 결핍이 보다 나은 삶의 지향(미래 지향형)으로 이끄는 동력이 되어 기존의 편안함과 안정을 뒤로하고 낯선 장소로의 이주를 기꺼이 선택하게 하였으며 새로운 문화에서 그들의 삶을 개척해가는 생활양식을 형성하게끔 하였다. 반면 2세들은 1세대의 삶에 비하여 개인적·사회적 자원이 준비되어있음에도 오히려 자신의 생애발달에 있어 적극적이지 않거나 주어진 자원 안에 머무르며 안주하는 삶의 형태(현재 안주형)를 보였다. 부모세대로부터 주어진 한국문화와 실제 삶의 터전인 독일문화 사이에서의 갈등과 주류 문화에 속할 수 없다는 다름의 경험은 이들의 정체성 형성에 있어 한국인과 독일인 사이에 머무르게 하는 결핍의 요소로 작용되었다. 1세대와 2세대 모두 결핍으로부터 벗어나 더 나은 삶을 위한 선택을 하고 있지만, 1세대에게 결핍은 떠날 수 있는 용기와 새로운 것에 대한 두려움을 이겨내는 힘이 되어 개척하는 삶을 선택하도록 한 반면, 2세대가 갖는 정체감 형성에의 결핍요소는 안정적이고 익숙한 환경에 머무르는 삶을 선택함으로써 결핍된 감정을 상쇄하게끔 하는 것을 볼 수 있었다. 본 연구의 결과는 다문화 사회에서 1세대와 2세대가 어떻게 문화적으로 적응하며 정체성을 형성해 가는지 각 세대의 가치관과 태도의 차이에 대한 이해를 도울 것이다.

영어초록

This research has reconstructed living strategies that showed through the biographical development experiences of the first and second generations of Korean migrants to Germany. To that end, the “reconstruction research method” was utilized to deeply explore (interpret) the latent meaning of living strategy structures from individual life histories of each case through resource theory and deprivation theory. As for the first generation, their individual and social resource deprivation became their motivation for a better life (future-oriented). Therefore, they willingly left the comfortable and secure life, moved to strange places, and formed a life style that pioneered their own life in a new cultural environment. On the other hand, the second generation, though having more individual and social resources than the first generation, was not enthusiastic in their life development or tended to settle for the resources that were given to them (present-oriented). With regard to the second generation, the conflict between Korean culture from their parents and German culture from their home and the experience of difference that they cannot belonge to the mainstream culture worked as deprivation that forced them to stay in-between Koreans and Germans in terms of their identity formation. Both the first and second generations have made choices to escape their deprivation for a better life: as for the first generation, their deprivation became their courage to move and their power to overcome the fear of a new environment, encouraging them to become pioneers of their lives; and as for the second generation, their deprivation in the process of the formation of their identity encouraged them to choose a life with security and a familiar environment, offsetting the deprivation. The findings of this research will help to understand how the first and the second generations culturally adapt to a new environment and form their identity in a multicultural society and which different values and attitudes the first and the second generation have.
