채필근의 삶과 종교학 (The Life and the Religious Studies of Chae Pil-geun)

초록

채필근은 일제강점기에 주도적으로 활동한 개신교 목회자이자 신학자이다.
그는 평양신학교를 졸업한 후, 일본에 유학해서 도쿄제국대학에서 철학을 공부하면서 종교학을 접할 수 있었다. 귀국 후에는 숭실전문대 강의와 《신학지남》 기고를 통해 종교학 지식을 형성하였다. 그 결과 학계 동향을 반영한 균형 잡힌 글을발표하여 국내 신학계에 종교학을 소개하였다. 그는 해방 후에도 비교종교학 관련 강의와 저술을 이어가서, 20세기 후반까지 학술적 영향을 주었다.
그가 1930년을 전후해 발표한 글을 중심으로 분석한 결과, 채필근 저술의종교학적 의의를 다음과 같이 정리할 수 있다. 첫째, 그는 종교를 대상으로 하여과학적 방법으로 연구하는 학문이라고 종교학을 분명하게 정의하였다. 종교학이형성된 초기 종교학사의 배경, 종교학의 하위 학문과 방법론적 과제 등, 당시국내에서 접하기 힘든 고급스러운 정보를 정리해서 제공하였다. 둘째, 그는 종교학과 신학의 상호적 필요성을 인정하는 구도를 제시하였다. 그는 이성적 근거를가진 신앙을 확립하고자 하였는데, 이를 위해서도 종교 연구는 필수적이었다.
그는 반종교적인 담론이 횡횡했던 분위기 속에서 종교의 필요성을 제시하는 것에종교학 지식을 사용하였다. 종교와 신앙의 균형을 추구한 그의 안목이 신학계의주류적 태도가 되지 못한 것은, 훗날 한국의 종교학 수용에 어려움을 준 간접적인배경이었다는 점에서 아쉬운 대목이다.
그는 일제강점기 말에 적극적으로 친일 활동을 한 지식인이었다. 일본적 기독교 신학을 생산하는 신학교의 교장이었고, 침략전쟁에 협력하는 연설을 하였으며, 강제로 통합된 교단의 책임자가 되었다. 친일 행위는 학문적 논리의 결과물은아니었다. 오히려 그것은 학문적 논리를 훼손하며 현실에 순응한 결과이다. 그의삶과 학문이 보여주는 모순은 현실에 굴복한 식민지 지식인의 모습을 보여준다.

Chae Pil-geun was a prominent Protestant pastor and theologian who significantly contributed to the development of religious studies in Korea during the Japanese colonial era. After graduating from Pyongyang Theological Seminary, he pursued further studies in philosophy at Tokyo Imperial University, where he engaged with Western religious scholarship.
Upon returning to Korea, he consolidated these insights through lectures at Soongsil College and contributions to Theological Review, systematically introducing religious studies to Korean theological circles. His work had a lasting academic impact, extending into the latter half of the 20th century through his continued engagement with comparative religious studies post-liberation.
Chae’s contributions to religious studies in Korea were substantial. An analysis of his writings around 1930 highlights the significance of his work as follows: Firstly, he clearly defined religious studies as a discipline employing scientific methods to investigate religions. He provided advanced information on the historical background, subfields, and methodological challenges of religious studies-knowledge that was scarce in Korea at the time. Secondly, he presented a framework acknowledging the mutual necessity of religious studies and theology. He sought to establish faith grounded in rational evidence, for which religious research was essential.
In an environment dominated by anti-religious discourse, he utilized religious studies to underscore the importance of religion. Although his balanced perspective on religion and faith did not become mainstream in Korean theology, it indirectly contributed to the challenges faced by religious studies in Korea.
However, Chae was also an active pro-Japanese intellectual during the late colonial period. He served as the president of a seminary that produced Japanese-oriented Christian theology and delivered speeches supporting Japan’s aggressive war efforts. Additionally, he became a leader in the forcibly merged Protestant denominations. His pro-Japanese actions were not a product of academic logic but rather a compromise that undermined his intellectual integrity in favor of conforming to reality.
The contradiction between Chae’s life and academic pursuits serves as a poignant illustration of the colonial intellectual who succumbed to the pressures of reality. This dichotomy highlights the complex challenges faced by scholars in colonial contexts, where academic integrity often clashed with the harsh realities of political subjugation.
