초록

조선민화박물관에 소장된 《산수도 8폭 병풍》은 비단에 부드럽고 섬세한 느낌의 수묵담채로 다채로운 산수 경관과산 중의 고아한 문인들을 묘사한 것이다. 이 병풍은 관서나 인장이 없어 그 작자나 제작 시기를 명확히 파악하기는 어렵지만 조선 후기부터 축적된 화원 회화 전통이 19세기에 어떻게 계승 및 변모해 갔는가를 보여주는 사례로 주목된다.
산수도 병풍은 순수한 감상은 물론 민간의 혼례용으로 주로 제작 및 활용되었다. 조선 후기에는 사계절의 변화와아름다움이 관념산수와 실경산수로 표현되었다. 19세기 이후 근대기에는 사계산수로 구성되는 예가 많았지만 《산수도 8폭 병풍》은 주황색 계열의 잡목 묘사가 같이 나타나 가을 산수를 그린 것으로 보인다.
이 병풍은 유명 당시 및 송시의 일부와 자제시가 덧붙여 쓰여 있어 조선후기 시의도 제작과 감상의 전통을 보인다.
화면 중앙에 등장하는 고아한 문인들의 일상은 문인 문화에 대한 동경을 반영한다. 그 소재와 경물 묘사는 조선 후기의 유명 화원 김홍도를 비롯하여 이인문, 김득신, 김석신 등의 화풍이 토대가 되었음이 뚜렷하다. 특히 대대로 화원을배출했던 개성 김씨 가문의 김득신과 김석신의 현존 작품이 마치 화본처럼 활용된 듯 병풍에 영향을 미친 점이 특징적이다. 이는 개성 김씨 가문에서 19세기 말엽까지 화원을 배출하면서 그들에 의해 가내 화풍이 계승되며 화단에 영향을 미쳤기 때문일 것이다. 개성 김씨 후손이 아니더라도 그들로부터 회화 수련을 받았거나 사제 간을 형성하여 기량을 훈련했던 인물들을 통해 화풍이 전승되었을 가능성도 있다. 나아가 아회 장면 묘사에서 근대기 화단의 경향까지 엿보이는 점은 전통의 계승과 변화의 추구라는 다층성을 시사한다.
병풍의 산수 표현은 조선후기 화원 회화 전통을 토대로 하면서도 새롭게 유입된 청의 사왕화풍을 수용하며 변화를모색해가던 19세기 화단의 전개 양상과 일치하며, 특히 김득신의 산수화풍이 그대로 반영되어 있다. 19세기 화단에서 대표적인 직업 화가로 활동했던 장승업의 영향도 산수 표현에서 확인되며 장승업 문하에서 그림을 배운 근대기의조석진이나 안중식의 산수화풍과도 연결성이 엿보인다.
19세기 말엽으로 갈수록 화단 저변에서의 회화 제작과 유통도 활발하게 전개되었다. 이 병풍은 전문성 면에서 부족함이 없는, 상당한 수준의 실력을 갖춘 무명의 화가들이 저변에서 활동하며 회화 제작 활동에 임했던 상황을 짐작하게 해준다. 갑오개혁에 따른 도화서의 해체는 화원들의 활동 영역과 성격의 변화를 초래했는데, 민간에서도 회화제작과 소비가 확대되던 당시 상황 속에서 《산수도 8폭 병풍》과 같은 작품이 제작될 수 있었을 것이다.

영어초록

The 8-Fold Landscape Screen (山水圖 8幅 屛風) housed in the Chosun Minhwa Museum, depicts a variety of landscapes and the literati in the mountains with a soft and delicate ink-and-wash feature on silk. This folding screen is noteworthy as an example of how the tradition of Hwawon (Court Painters) paintings accumulated since the late Joseon Dynasty inherited and transformed in the 19th century although it is difficult to clearly grasp the author or the timing of production because there is no official seal.
Landscape folding screens were mainly produced and utilized for private weddings as well as pure appreciation.
In the late Joseon Dynasty, the changes and beauty of the four seasons were expressed as Gyannyum sansu (Ideal Landscape Painting) and Silgyeong sansu (Real-scenery Landscape). In the modern period after the 19th century, there were many examples of Sagye Sansu (Four Seasons Landscape), but the folding screen appears to have the same orange-colored miscellaneous tree description, drawing autumnal arithmetic.
This folding screen shows the tradition of making and appreciating poems in the late Joseon Dynasty as parts of the famous Tang and Song Dynasty poems and self-help poems have been added. The daily lives of the literati in the center of the screen reflect a longing for literary culture. It is clear that the material and the description of these relics were based on the painting style of Kim Hong-do, Lee In-moon, Kim Deuk-sin, and Kim Seok-sin, who were famous court painters in the late Joseon Dynasty. In particular, it is characterized by the fact that the existing works of Kim Deuk-shin and Kim Seok-shin of the Kaesong Kim family, who produced court painters for generations, influenced the folding screen as if they were an illustrated manual. This may be because the Kaesong Kim family produced court painters until the end of the 19th century, and the domestic style was inherited by them, affecting the painting group. Even if one is not a descendant of Kaesong Kim, it is possible that the style of painting was passed down through figures who trained their skills by receiving their painting training from them or form student relationships. Furthermore, the fact that the description of the literary gathering scenes and the trend of the modern painting circle suggest the multi-layered nature of the inheritance of tradition and the pursuit of change.
Landscape expression is consistent with the development of 19th century paintings, which were based on the court painting tradition in the late Joseon Dynasty but sought changes by accepting the newly introduced Four Wangs (四王) painting style of Qing Dynasty, and in particular, reflects Kim Deuk-shin's landscape painting style.
The influence of Jang Seung-up, who worked as a representative professional painter in the 19th century, is also confirmed in the expression of arithmetic, and it is also connected to the landscape style of Cho Seok-jin and Ahn Jung-sik in the modern era, who learned painting under Jang Seung-up.
Towards the end of the 19th century, painting production and distribution in the base were also actively developed. This folding screen suggests the situation in which unknown artists with a considerable level of skill, who are not lacking in professionalism, worked on the base and engaged in painting production activities. The dismantling of Dohwaseo (圖畵署) following the Gabo-reformation (甲午改革) caused a change in the area and character of court painters. In a situation at the time when painting production and consumption were expanding in the private sector, works such as the folding screen housed in the Chosun Minhwa Museum could have been produced.
