초록

‘十大弟子’란 석가모니를 직접 모셨던 직계 聲聞弟子 중 우두머리 열명을 일컫는 말로, ‘釋迦十大弟子’, ‘釋迦十聖’라고도 한다. 이 글은 통일신라 불교미술 최고의 걸작품인 석굴암 조각 중에서 십대제자상을 중점적으로 다루었다. 십대제자상은 본존불이 있는 원형 主室의 主壁에 배치되어 존격이 높다. 또한 주실 벽면의 3분의 2에해당하는 넓은 벽면을과감하게 할애한 중요한 상이다.
십대제자상은 정확한 존명이나 배치순서에 이견이 많다. 왜냐하면 지물과 수인이 所依經典과 맞지 않고, 존명을 정확하게 비교할 만한 도상의 근거가 아직 제시되지 않았기 때문이다. 특히 불제자는 깨달음을 얻었으나 미륵이 올때까지 중생을 제도해야할 지극히 인간다운 ‘僧侶’나 ‘祖師’의 도상으로 표현이 자유로우며 개성적이고, 고정된 圖像없이 다양하다. 그중 병향로와 향합을 든 도상, 경권을 든 도상, 합장을 한 도상 등은 석굴암을 비롯한 동아시아의 국제적인 도상이다. 이는 일본 가쥬지(勧修寺) <釋迦如來說法圖>, 중국 <敦煌 莫高窟 56窟 壁畵>, 중국 <炳靈寺 11窟 壁畵> 등과 비교할 수 있다.
석굴암 십대제자상은 정확하게 좌우대칭을 기초로 한 원형배치법이다. 본존상을 중심으로 둥글게 도는 원형배치법이며, 양 끝의 제자가 병향로와 향합을 들고 공양의식을 하고 있는 장면을 성공적으로 구현하였다. 본존을 성스럽게 둘러싸는 한편, 입구쪽을 향하여 율동감있게 행진하는 모습을 조형화한 완벽한 조각이다.
석굴암 십대제자상과 양식적으로 비교할 주요 작품은 중국 <龍門石窟 東山 看經寺洞 29祖師像>, 중국 <龍門石窟 擂鼓台 中洞의 25祖師像>, 중국 <天龍山 石窟 아난·가섭상>, 일본 <興福寺 乾漆 十大弟子像> 등이다. 얼굴은 강한 볼륨감을 준 서역인의 풍모이며, 표정은 인간적인 감정을 드러내 섬세하고, 유려한 옷자락 등 사실주의에 충실한 양식이다. 따라서 십대제자상은 석굴암 도상 중에서 가장 자유롭고 개성강한 조형이다.

영어초록

The ten principle disciples are refered to the ten leading disciples also called ‘the ten disciples of Sakyamuni’ or ‘the ten saints of Sakyamuni’, who served Buddha and heard his preaching close to. This study is focused on the statue of the ten principle disciples in Seokguram, considered the masterpiece of Buddhist art in Silla in the era from the 7th to 8th century. The statue of the ten disciples is arranged at the back wall of the main chamber where the Svadeva (Principle Buddha) is placed, suggesting their highly considered position in Buddhism Also two thirds of the wall in the main chamber is allocated for their statue, which presents their religious significance.
Still, there are a number of differing views in their exact names or the order of arrangement, since the symbolic hand gesture or what they hold is not in accord with the Buddhist scriptures and there is no ground for the icon to identify their names yet. Especially a Buddhist regarded as the icon of a very humane monk or a Buddhist Patriarch achieved great enlightenment but remained for leading all living beings till the advent of Maitreya. The way they are expressed is various and distinctive without any formulaic pattern.
Of them, there are some icons in common in Eastern Asia including Seokguram, such as the icon holding an incense burner with shaft or an incense box, the icon with a scroll of sutras, and the icon putting its hands together in a prayer position. It is available to compare with the Painting of Buddha Giving a Sermon at Kajuji Temple (勧修寺 釋迦如來說法圖) in Japan or the mural painting at the 56th Grotto of Dunhuang Mogao Caves (敦煌 莫高窟 56窟 壁畵) and that of the 11th Grotto in Bingling Temple (炳靈寺 11窟 壁畵) in China. The statue of the ten disciples in Seokguram is structured in a circle arrangement with the exact bilateral symmetry. It surrounds the statue of Svadeva in a circle and effectively pictures the scene that two disciples at each end hold the incense burner and the incense box to make an offering ritual. While surrounding the Svadeva in a holy way, it is carved with perfection to make an offering by rhythmic and lively motions toward the entrance. In comparing, the followings are available in terms of the mode of expression; in China, the 29 Buddhist Patriarchs in Kanjingsidong (東山 看經寺洞 29祖師像) and the 25 Buddhist Patriarchs in Leigutai Jungdong (擂鼓台 中洞 25祖師像) of Longmen Grottoes (龍門石窟), the Statue of Ananda and Kasyapa at Tianlongshan Cave (天龍山 石窟) or in Japan, the Lacquered Statue of the Ten Principle Disciples in Kofukuji Temple (興福寺 乾漆 十大弟子像).
Each of the disciples’ faces looks similar to Westerners’ with strong visual depth and expresses humane emotions with the flowing trains of garment, which truly presents realism.
Thus, the statue of the ten principle disciples is the most unconstrained and distinctive art work in all the statuary in Seokguram.
