초록

曹溪山은 한국의 불교 전통과 뗄 수 없는 관계이다. 산의 명호 자체가 불교에서 유래하였으며, 松廣寺와 仙巖寺라는 이름난 거찰이 산의 동서 양측에서 면면히 그 전통을 이어오고 있다. 조계산의 불교 전통을 종합해서 정리하며, 더불어 그것을 역사적 흐름에 비춰 해석함으로써, 그 구체적인 실상을 드러내는 게 이 글의 목표이다. 송광사와 선암사를 중심으로 이어져 온 불교의 전통을 살피며, 그리하여 한국불교사에서 조계산 불교가 의미하는 바를 헤아려 되짚는 기회로 삼으려 한다.
조계산 일원에 불교가 뿌리를 내린 것은 신라 하대에 가서였다. 송광사의 전신인 吉祥寺와 선암사의 창건이 그 즈음에 비롯되었다. 조계산이 위치하는 순천지역에 불교가 처음 전래된 것은 그보다 이른 시기였을 터이다. 그렇지만 사찰이 자리를 잡음으로써 불교가 지역사회에서 일정한 역할을 수행한 것은 통일신라의 말엽에 이르러서였다. 순천 일원을 근거로 성장하던 호족의 후원 속에 가능한 일이었다.
조계산 불교가 크게 번성한 것은 고려왕조에 들어서였다. 고려왕조의 개창 이후 조계산의 길상사와 선암사는 손꼽히는 명찰로 대두하였다. 먼저 번성을 자랑한 쪽은 선암사였다. 대각국사 의천의 선암사 중창설이 전해지며, 더욱이 선암사 경내에 고려전기의 부도가 3기나 자리하는 게 그 증거였다. 송광사는 무인정권의 시기에 들어 비로소 두각을 드러냈다. 보조국사 지눌의 정혜결사가 옮겨오면서, 송광사는 손꼽히는 명찰로 자리를 잡았다. 頓悟漸修와 定慧雙修 및 看話禪을 내세우는 지눌의 수선결사는 널리 상하의 호응을 불러일으켰다. 그리하여 수선사는 송광사를 본산으로 당대의 불교 교단을 영도하는 존재로 부각되었다. 이후 수선사에서는 고승을 연달아 배출하며 한국의 조계종이 발전하는 데 크게 기여하였다.
조선왕조가 개창되면서 조계산 불교는 크게 위축되었다. 그렇지만 조선 유교사회의 탄압을 받으면서도, 조계산의 사찰들은 생존을 모색하며 나름의 전통을 유지하고자 고심하였다. 송광사와 선암사에서 단속적으로 이어졌던 중창 불사라든지 佛書의 간행이 그러한 증거였다. 조계산 불교가 한국불교사에서 다시 두각을 드러낸 것은 조선후기에 가서였다. 浮休善修의 계열이 송광사에 자리를 잡음으로 해서였다. 부휴계열에서는 송광사를 거점으로 삼아, 知訥의 저서를 집중적으로 간행하고, 수선사의 전통을 강조하며, 지눌과 송광사를 현창하는 데 적극적이었다. 조선시기의 불교가 지눌의 사상을 계승하여 오늘에 이르렀는데, 그러한 사상 전승의 핵심적 공간이 송광사였다. 그만큼 조선시기의 불교사에서 송광사를 비롯한 조계산 불교의 비중이 막중하였다. 더불어 임진왜란 당시 海上 僧侶義兵의 주요 거점 가운데 하나가 송광사였음도 잊을 수 없는 사실이다.
조계산 일원은 한국 불교의 특징이라 할 調和融會思想의 산실이자, 더욱이 그러한 전통을 가꿔 오늘에 이르도록 면면히 이어온 거의 유일한 공간이었다. 보조국사 이래 조선시기를 거쳐 현재에 이르도록, 조계산 불교는 禪敎調和의 이념을 제시하고 또 그것을 실천하는 일에 열심이었다. 禪敎의 融會兼修를 바탕으로 편협한 종파주의를 넘어 보다 높은 차원에서 사상적 갈등을 극복 해소하려는, 이를테면 한국적인 禪敎調和의 이념을 제시하고 더욱이 그것을 실천하는 데 앞장서왔거니와, 요컨대 그러한 데에서 조계산 불교가 지니는 바 韓國佛敎史上의 의의를 찾아 마땅한 셈이었다.

영어초록

Jogye mountain has inseparable relationship with Korean Buddhism tradition. The name of the mountain was derived from Buddhism tradition. And the two famous temples, the Songgwang-sa and the Seonam-sa, are keeping on their Buddhism tradition on the east and the west sides of the mountain. This study is focused on showing the real state of the traditional Buddhism in Mt. Jogye, by arranging overall the tradition of Buddhism in Mt. Jogye and interpreting it in the historical flow. This article aims to take a good look of Buddhism tradition of the Songgwang-sa and the Seonam-sa and to trace the meaning of Jogye mountain Buddhism in Korean Buddhist history.
Buddhism took root around Jogye mountain in the late period of Unified Silla. The Gilsang-sa known as the before name of the Songgwang-sa and the Seonam-sa was built in that time. It would be faster than that time that the Buddhism was first introduced in the Suncheon areas where the Jogye mountain is located. But it was in the late period of Unified Silla that Buddhism performed a certain role in the Suncheon community by the Buddhist temple placing itself. It was possible with the support of Powerful Gentry Families that was growing on the Suncheon areas.
It was in Goryeo Dynasty that the Jogye mountain Buddhism flourished. The Gilsang-sa and the Seonam-sa in Mt. Jogye area emerged after the Goryeo Dynasty was established. First time the Seonam-sa was proud of flourishing before the Gilsang-sa did. It was the evidence that the Seonam-sa was still reported to be repaired by Uicheon known as the National Preceptor Daegak and moreover three memorial stupas erected in the early Goryeo was kept in the Seonam-sa area. The Songgwang-sa became distinguished after the seizure of power by the military. The Songgwang-sa was settled into the famous temple since the Cheonghyegyeolsa of Jinul known as the National Preceptor Bojo had been transferred to. The Suseongyeolsa of Jinul who insisted and teached “sudden-enlightenment followed by gradual-cultivation”(dono jeomsu) and “twofold training in quiescence and knowing”(jeonghye ssangsu) and “the contemplation of words”(ganhwaseon) was widely supported by high and low. Thus, the Suseongyeolsa with a head temple, the Songgwang-sa, emerged as a leading presence of the Buddhism order in those days. Since then the Suseongyeolsa produced successively many outstanding Buddhist preceptors and contributed greatly to the development of the Korean Jogye sect.
The Buddhism in Jogye mountain was cowered exceedingly after the Joseon Dynasty was established. The Buddhism was suppressed in Confucian society of Joseon. But the Buddhist temples in Jogye mountain worked hard for their survival and to maintain their tradition. It was such evidence that the temple buildings were repaired and expanded or the Buddhist scriptures were published by the Songgwang-sa and the Seonam-sa. The Jogye mountain Buddhism exposed to prominence again the late Joseon Dynasty in Korea Buddhist history. It was the ground that an eminent Buddhist monk Buhyu Seonsu and his disciples settled down at the Songgwang-sa. The branch of Buhyu Seonsu in Jogye sect, basing on the Songgwang-sa, published Jinul’s writings intensively and emphasized the tradition of the Suseonsa with a view to exposing and praising Jinul and the Songgwang-sa. The Buddhism in Joseon period succeeded Jinul’s thinking and spirit and such stream reached to nowadays. The key area of those succession was the Songgwang-sa. Mt. Jogye Buddhism headed by the Songgwang-sa occupied large proportion of the Buddhist history of Joseon so much. It was not forgettable the fact that the Songgwang-sa was one of the major bases of maritime priest patriotic soldiers through the Japanese Invasion of Imjin(1592), together.
The area around the Jogye mountain was a cradle of a harmonization of the Seon contemplative and Gyo textual schools, the key features of Korean Buddhism, and futhermore was the only space where the tradition of such idea has been succeeded nowadays. The Jogye mountain Buddhism made efforts to raise and practice the philosophy of a harmonization of the Seon and Gyo schools from the days of the National Preceptor Bojo down to nowadays through the Joseon period. The Jogye mountain Buddhism has taken the initiative in showing and discipling the very Korean ideology of a harmonization of the Seon and Gyo schools which aimed to conquer and solve the ideological conflict in higher levels than the closed-minded sectarianism, based on the harmonization of the Seon and Gyo schools with training both. To sum up, considering these things, we ought to find the significance that the Jogye mountain Buddhism have in Korean Buddhism history.
