남원 선원사 시왕도의 태극기 연구 (A Study on the Taegeukgi of the Ten Kings of Hell painting at Temple in Namwon Seonwonsa)

초록

이 논문은 남원 선원사의 시왕도 관모에 그려진 태극기의 시대적 배경과 의의를 살펴보고 향후 대책과 활용방안을 모색한 내용이다.
시왕도란 사람이 죽어서 저승에 갔을 때 살아생전의 죄를 밝혀서 극락행과 지옥행을 결정짓는 시왕들의 엄정한 심판 장면을 표현한 불화의 일종이다. 이 시왕도는 1917년에 조성되어 105년 만에 발견된 것으로 정형 4괘와 태극문양을 갖춘 태극기가 그려진 불화이다. 조성 시기가 1911년 조선총독부 사찰령(寺刹令)에 의해 불교가 탄압당하고, 1912년 조선총독부칙령 제19호에 의해 오로지 일장기만을 게양하도록 강제함으로써 태극기가 말살 당하였던 엄혹한 일제강점기였다.
남원 선원사 시왕도의 의의는 엄혹한 일제강점기에 시왕도를 조성하면서 위험을 무릅쓰고 변성대왕 관모에 고의적으로 태극기를 몰래 그려 불교계의 항일 정신과 민족의 정체성을 극명하게 표현한 것이라 하겠다. 변성대왕이 관장하는 지옥은 도산지옥으로 칼로써 남을 괴롭힌 죄인에게 칼로 된 길을 걷게 하여 고통을 주는 시왕이다. 즉 남의 나라를 무기로 찬탈한 죄는 반드시 무기로 심판받을 것이라는 경고로 여겨진다. 이 시왕도의 연구 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다.
첫째, 정형 4괘와 태극문양을 갖춘 태극기 그림이 시왕도에서 발견된 것은 남원 선원사가 최초이다.
둘째, 화승 만총과 증명법사 진응혜찬이 뜻을 같이하여 위험을 무릅쓰고 시왕도의 관모에 고의적으로 태극기를 몰래 그려 불교계의 항일 정신과 민족의 정체성을 표현하였다.
셋째, 보존과학적 방법으로 물감분석 및 채색 기법을 해석한 결과 1917년 시대의 물감과 채색 기법이 동일한 것으로 입증하였다.
향후 대책과 활용방안으로는 첫째, 시왕도에 태극기가 그려진 희귀성과 가치, 진응혜찬이 ‘증명’한 점을 고려하여 국가유산으로 보존할 것과 미발굴 태극기 그림 불화를 찾는 방안도 강구토록 하였다. 둘째, 불교회화 측면, 남원의 의병활동과 항일정신을 일깨우는 역사적 측면, 일제강점기 동안 태극기의 변천사까지 아우르는 지속적인 연구를 제안하였다. 셋째, 시왕들의 독특한 캐릭터를 소재로 불교 만화‧애니메이션‧영화‧소설, 시왕도 태극기 스토리텔링 등 다양한 콘텐츠 개발의 필요성을 강조하였다.

영어초록

This paper is a study on the Taegeukgi (Korean flag) depicted in the Ten Kings of Hell painting of Seonwonsa Temple in Namwon. Ten Kings of Hell painting is a type of Buddhist painting that depicts a scene in which a person goes to the netherworld after death and judges the world of hell to determine whether or not they will go to paradise or hell by finding the sins they committed before they die.
This Ten Kings of Hell painting was created in 1917 and was discovered after 105 years, and is the first Buddhist painting depicting Taegeukgi with the four standard ruled lines and the Tai Chi pattern. Taegeukgi was born in September 1882 and was announced by King Gojong on March 6, 1883, and is a nickname that has been sung since the Joseon Dynasty. Unfortunately, Taegeukgi suffered extermination and suffering during the 36 years of Japanese colonial rule, along with the suppression of Buddhism.
During this dark period of history, Namwon Seonwonsa Temple created the Ten Kings of Hell painting and secretly drew Taegeukgi on ByeonseongDaewang's hat to express his will for independence. The hell presided over by ByeonseongDaewang is the Dosan hell, which is the king of hell who tortures sinners who have tormented others with a sword by making them walk the path of the sword and inflicting pain. In other words, the sin of usurping someone else's country with weapons will surely be punished with weapons.
Thus, in August 1945, Japan, the war maniac in Asia, surrendered to the Allies after being punished by an atomic bomb that humanity had never experienced. The great significance of this Ten Kings of Hell painting is that it was painted by Manchong, who is well-known as the successor of Buddhist painting in the early modern century, and endorsed by Jineunghyechan, who was revered as a great Buddhist teacher and anti-Japanese monk.
In addition, as a result of the analysis of pigments and coloring techniques using conservation scientific methods, it was proved that the pigments and coloring techniques of the Ten Kings of Hell painting painted in 1917 were the same. First, it was argued that Taegeukgi should be preserved as a Korea Heritage in consideration of the rarity and value of Taegeukgi in the Kings of Hell painting and the fact that Jineunghyechan guaranteed it. Second, he emphasized the need to study more diligently the Buddhist pictorial aspects, the historical aspects that informed the anti-Japanese military activitie and the spirit of the independence movement in Namwon, and the history of Taegeukgi during the Japanese colonial period. Third, he suggested the need to develop various contents based on the unique characters of Ten Kings of Hell, such as Buddhist comics, anime, movies, novels, and Taegeukgi storytelling depicted in Ten Kings of Hell paintings.
