서울 봉은사 왕실발원 석가괘불도 연구 (A Study on Court-sponsored at Bongeunsa Temple, Seoul)

초록

본 연구는 서울 봉은사 <석가괘불도>의 도상과 성격을 밝혀보고, 양식을 고찰해 봄으로써 봉은사 <석가괘불도>의 미술사적 위치를 찾아보고자 하였다.
이에 따라 먼저 제2장에서는 봉은사의 연혁과 석가괘불도의 조성배경에 대해 살펴보았고 ‘염화인불(拈花印佛)’ 도상과 왕실발원 괘불도의 특징과 현황을 알아보았다. 제3장에서는 봉은사 <석가괘불도>의 도상 및 양식특징에 대하여 파악해보았으며, 제4장에서는 봉은사 <석가괘불도> 조성 수화승인 ‘긍조’의 화적과 화승들과의 유파관계를 살펴보고 화기 내용을 알아보았다.
그 결과 봉은사 <석가괘불도>는 조선시대 후반기 제3기에 해당하는 1886년 조성의 괘불도로서, 헌종의 후궁 경빈 김씨를 비롯하여 내명부 상궁들의 시주 참여와 발원을 통한 내용을 살필 수 있었다. 특히 19세기 많은 화적을 남긴 수화승 ‘긍조’와 ‘돈조’가 참여하였으며 화승과의 교류를 통하여 도상과 양식 특징의 유파관계를 파악할 수 있었다.
특히 봉은사 <석가괘불도>는 손에 연꽃가지를 든 ‘염화인불’ 도상으로 19세기 석가괘불도 가운데 개운사 <석가괘불도>, 호국지장사(화장사) <석가괘불도> 등이 있고, 주 협시보살인 문수·보현보살상 대신 가섭존자상과 아난존자상이 협시하고 있거나, 문수·보현동자상이 등장하는 도상은 봉은사 <석가괘불도>를 포함하여 개운사 <석가괘불도>, 내원암 <석가괘불도>, 호국지장사(화장사) <석가괘불도> 등으로 매우 독특한 도상적 특징을 볼 수 있다.
이렇듯 왕실발원 괘불도로서의 조성배경과 ‘염화인불’ 도상의 성격을 파악해보고, 다양한 양식 특징을 고찰해 봄으로써 봉은사 <석가괘불도>의 미술사적 위치를 파악할 수 있었다.

영어초록

This study attempts to examine the position of <Shakyamuni Banner Painting> at Bongeunsa in the art history by exploring the iconography and character <Shakyamuni Banner Painting> at Bongeunsa temple in Seoul and examining its style.
Accordingly, first, in Chapter 2, we reviewed the history of Bongeunsa temple and the composition background of Shakyamuni Banner Painting at Bongeunsa, and 'Yeomhwainbul (拈花印佛)' iconography and investigated the characteristics and status of court-sponsored banner paintings. In Chapter 3, we examined the iconographical and stylistic characteristics of Shakyamuni Banner Painting at Bongeunsa, and in Chapter 4, we examined the painting recordsof 'Geungjo', the head painter monk who created <Shakyamuni Banner Painting> at Bongeunsa temple, and the relationship of schools of painting with painter monks, and examined the contents of painting skills.
As a result, <Shakyamuni Banner Painting> at Bongeunsa temple is a banner paintingcreated in 1886 corresponding to the third period of the later Joseon era, in which King Heonjong's royal concubine Gyeongbin Kim, court feminine bureaucratic system court ladies' participation in donations and composition wishes were examined. In particular, the head painter monks, 'Geungjo' and 'Donjo', who left many painting records in the 19th century, participated in the work, and through the interaction with painter monks, this study managed to grasp the relationship between schools of painting in the characteristics of iconography and style.
In particular, <Shakyamuni Banner Painting> at Bongeunsa temple is a 'Yeomhwainbul' iconography with a Lotus branch in thehand, and these include <Shakyamuni Banner Painting> at Gaeunsa and <Shakyamuni Banner Painting> at Hogukjigangsa (Hwajangsa) among Shakyamuni Banner Paintings in the 19th century. Very unique iconographical featuresare seen in the fact that GaseopJonja images and AhnanJonja images are represented as essential secondary statusimages instead of Munsu-Bohyeon Bodhisattvas images which are essential secondary status Bodhisattvas, or in that iconographies featuring Munsu-Bohyeon Dongja images are left pieces of work such as <Shakyamuni Banner Painting> at Gaeunsa – <Shakyamuni Banner Painting> at Naewonam - <Shakyamuni Banner Painting> at Hogukjigangsa (Hwajangsa) including <Shakyamuni Banner Painting> at Bongeunsa temple.
As such, by grasping the background of composition and the character of Yeomhwainbul iconography as court-sponsored banner paintings, and examining various style features, this study was able to see the location of <Shakyamuni Banner Painting> at Bongeunsa temple in the art history.
