근대 上海 도시문화와 狹邪小說 (The Modern Shanghai’s Metropolitan Culture and the Xiaxie Novel)

초록

근대 上海는 개항과 함께 상공업도시로 급성장하며, 서방문화의 충격 속에 현대도시로 탈바꿈한 전환기 대표도시였다. 발전과 변화 속에 두드러지게 드러난 특징은 전통도시와 달리 中西의 충돌과 융합을 통해 탄생한 특유의 상업적 도시문화였다. 급속한 인구증가와 도시화과정은 시민계층의 확산과 대중문화의 발전을 가져왔지만, 소비･향락에 치우친 유흥문화가 발전하였으니 바로 妓院의 번영이었다.
본 연구는 근대 上海의 도시문화 특징과 협사소설 성행에 대한 이해를 통해 당시 사회･문화를 살펴보려는 목적에서 출발하였다. 이를 위해 먼저, 조계 형성을 통해 문화의 중심지로 성장한 上海의 상업문화 특징을 살펴보았다. 다음, 도시화와 妓院의 번영에 따른 통속소설의 발전과 狹邪小說의 성행을 살펴보았다. 여기에는 다양한 실제 史料와 인구통계 등이 이용되었다. 마지막으로 협사소설의 대표작인 ≪海上花列傳≫을 예로 당시 上海의 도시문화와 기형적으로 번영한 妓院의 문화적 특징들을 살펴보았다. 소설에 뚜렷이 드러나고 있는 세태에 대한 묘사들은 당시 上海의 시민계층과 도시문화, 특히 妓院과 화류계를 통한 중국인의 내면세계와 특정문화를 이해할 수 있는 중요한 요소들이다. 나아가 문학사적 관점에서도 근대문학과 협사소설을 설명하는 적절한 자료가 될 것이라 여긴다.

영어초록

Shanghai today represents one of the cities that went through a significant transition period to transform into a modern city through experiencing culture shock from the Western culture, achieving a rapid growth as a commercial and industrial metropolis along with an open harbor. A remarkable feature that stands out from the change and development was the unique commercial metropolitan culture created through collision and convergence between China and the West, which differentiates itself from other traditional cities. Although the rapid population growth and urbanization process have brought a hierarchical diffusion of the citizens and advancement of pop culture, a culture of pleasure inclined to consumption and enjoyment has also evolved and that is, the prosperity of the whorehouse.
The objective of this study was to examine social culture of the past period by understanding the characteristics of urban culture and the Xiaxie novels in Shanghai. In order to attain this, the keynotes of commercial culture of Shanghai, which has become a cultural center through the course of premature formation, were closely examined. Then, the development of popular novels and prevalence of the Xiaxie novels from urbanization process with flourish of whorehouse were analyzed. A wide range of actual historical data and population statistics were used for this study. Lastly, one of the major works of the Xiaxie novels, “Flowers of Shanghai”, was used as an example to look into cultural characteristics of metro culture of Shanghai of that time and abnormally prosperous whorehouse. The portrayals of social conditions evident from the novel are important factors to understand the class of the citizens and urban culture of that time, especially the inner world of the Chinese and particular culture through whorehouse and demimonde. They will further be used as critical data to explain modern literature and the Xiaxie novels from the literary and historical views as well.
