초록

양평 용문산 상원사 범종은 한국 전통 종에서는 보기 드문 일본 종 양식의 외형을 지녀 오랫동 안 제작처 및 진위에 대한 상반된 의견들로 세간의 이목을 끌어왔다. 그만큼 한국 범종은 독창적 인 양식 변천을 통해 중국과 일본 범종과 확연히 구분되는 전형 양식이 강조되고 이는 곧 한국미 의 특질로 귀결된다. 이러한 독창적인 전형의 양식을 벗어난 <상원사 종>은 진지한 가치 규명에 대한 공감대 형성 없이 일본 종의 특징을 지닌 이유로 그 실체가 왜곡 혹은 외면되어온 것 역시 부정할 수 없다. 본 고에서는 <상원사 종>의 실체적 가치 규명에 집중하여 기존에 이 종의 진위 논쟁에서 축적된 성과들을 양측의 상반된 입장이 아닌 최대한 중립적 시각에서 분석하고자 노력 했다. 그것은 현재와 같은 논쟁이 자칫하면 <상원사 종>이 지닌 진정한 가치를 규명하기 위한 연 구의 초점을 흐릴 수 있는 우려가 크기 때문이다. 즉 종의 내력 고찰에 중요한 사료들과 과학적 성분 분석과 같은 객관적 자료조차 연구의 중심에서 배제될 가능성이 높다는 의미이다. 이러한 관점에서 전형의 틀을 벗어난 이형적 개성을 지닌 작품들 역시 한국 범종 양식사 연구 범주에서 중요하게 다루어져야 하고 <상원사 종>의 존재가 그 필요성을 강조하고 있는 것이다.
본 고에서는 <상원사 종>이 서울 남산의 일본 사찰로 이운되기 전에 자리했던 양평 상원사를 비롯한 용문산 일대의 불교사적 위상에 주목하면서 출발했다. 그 결과 양평 용문산의 불교적 위 상은 고려 국사 태고 보우와 조선초 왕실과의 밀접한 관계가 관음 신앙을 중심으로 확립되었음을 알 수 있었다. 더불어 당시 확장된 사세와 위상은 <상원사 종>과 같은 규모의 범종을 충분히 포 용할 수 있었음을 확인했다. 이후 이운의 여적에서는 국보의 지정과 해제 과정에서 비롯된 위작 설과 진작설의 대립, 최근의 과학적 성분 분석 등을 전반적으로 검토하여 나름의 진전된 타당성과 연구 방향에 대한 의견을 제시했다. 이 모든 가능성에서 <상원사 종>이 진작일 경우 그 제작처와 제작 시기 규명은 중요한 선결 과제가 된다. 현재로선 <상원사 종>의 제작처 규명은 쉽지 않지만 국적의 문제를 떠나 한·일 양국 간 교섭 관계에 중점을 둔다면 보다 진전된 연구 성과들을 기대 할 수 있는 부분이다. 이를 바탕으로 그 제작 시기는 범종의 양식사 측면에서 고찰하여 <상원사 종>과 같은 혼용 양상의 특징을 지닌 일본의 <뵤도인 종>, <고야지 종> 등과 비교분석 후 11세기 후반 즉 고려 전반기 정도로 추정할 수 있었다.

영어초록

The Sangwon Temple Bell in Mt. Yongmun of Yangpyeong is a rare case among the traditional Korean Buddhist temple bells as it appears to have a Japanese bell style. For many years, it has attracted public attention amid contrasting opinions of its maker and authenticity. This suggests that the Buddhist temple bells of Korea put an emphasis on their archetypal style after years of original style changes, which are concluded in the characteristics of Korean aesthetics that are clearly distinguished from their Chinese and Japanese counterparts. The true nature of the Sangwon Temple Bell, which deviates from the original archetypal style of Korean Buddhist temple bells, has been distorted or neglected without any consensus of a serious investigation into its value just because it has certain characteristics of Japanese bells. Focusing on the substantive value of the Sangwon Temple Bell, this study tries to objectively analyze the results accumulated by the old controversy over its authenticity from a neutral viewpoint rather than an opposing position. There is a huge concern that if the current controversy persists, it may blur the focus of the research to investigate the true value of the Sangwon Temple Bell. In other words, there is a big possibility that even historical materials important to examine the bell’s history and objective data such as scientific component analysis results might be excluded from the focus of this research. It is critical to place importance on aspects that are different from the archetypal framework for this viewpoint in the study of the history of Buddhist temple bell styles in Korea. The Sangwon Temple Bell emphasizes this need itself.
This study began by focusing on the status of Buddhism in the history of the Mt. Yongmun area containing the Sangwon Buddhist Temple of Yangpyeong where the Sangwon Temple Bell was before it was moved to a Japanese Buddhist temple in Mt. Nam of Seoul. It was found that the status of Buddhism of Mt. Yongmun in Yangpyeong was established based on the close relationships between Taego Bowoo, Goryeo’s high priest, and the royal family of early Joseon around Avalokitesvara belief. Its standing and status expanded enough to embrace Buddhist temple bells as big as the Sangwon Temple Bell. The researcher then examined the records of its move and comprehensively reviewed the confrontation that ensued its designation as a National Treasure and its deconstruction process between those who argued it was fake and those who insisted on its authenticity and the recent scientific analysis of its components, providing an opinion about the advanced validity and research directions about the bell. With all these possibilities taken into consideration, if it proves to be authentic, it is necessary to figure out the bell’s maker and time of construction. At present, it is not easy to investigate its maker, but a focus on the relationship of negotiation between South Korea and Japan beyond the issue of nationality will promote further advanced research findings. Based on this, the study examined the time of its construction in the history of Buddhist temple bell styles by comparing and analyzing it with the Byodoin Temple Bell and Koyaji Temple Bell, which have the same characteristics of mixed styles as the Sangwon Temple Bell, estimating that it was made in the late 11th century during the former part of Goryeo.
