낙산사 관음신앙의 설화적 표출 (The Faith in Avalokitesvara (Bodhisattva) of Naksan-sa Temple Represented in Narrative Literature)

초록

본 연구는 강원도 양양군에 소재하고 있는 낙산사 관음(觀音)신앙의 단초와 후대의 설화형상화에 대하여 살펴본 것이다. 일찍이 문헌설화에 등장하고 후대에 구전으로 전승되는 관음신앙의 화소비교를 통해서 낙산사가 관음신앙의 진신(眞身) 상주처로서 그 문화적, 역사적, 신앙적 전통성을 확보하고 있음을 확인하였다.
전체 5편의 설화에 공통적으로 등장하는 중심화소는 낙산사 창건과 관음신앙의 설화적 형상화다. 전자는 낙산사 창건의 정당성을 확보한 소재이고 후자는 관음신앙의 다양한 전승표현법이라 하겠다. 특별히 구전설화에는 양양지역과 관련하여 오봉산 산신신앙과 접합된 양상을 보이고 있음이 주목된다. 낙산사가 자리잡게 한 것은 오봉산 다섯 산신이라는 것이다. 오봉산은 바로 관음보살의 이마로서 이 산 전체가 바로 관음의 진신임을 상징적으로 말하고 있다.
바위굴, 소나무, 파랑새 등 자연물이 바로 관음진신의 소의처이자 변화신인 관음의 또 다른 상징임을 알 수 있다. 이러한 부처와 자연물의 화소결합에 따라 낙산사가 관음보살의 변신현재화의 장소, 더 나아가 관음진신과 동체(同體)로 인식하게 되었다. 결론으로 낙산사 창건설화는 신라이래로 관음보살 상주처로 확고한 자리매김을 하게 된 계기를 의상, 원효 고승의 행적을 통해 증명하고 있다. 이후 설화에서도 관음보살상, 해수관음상, 홍련암 관음굴, 관음송, 파랑새 등의 변신(變身)화소, 연기(緣起)화소를 통해서 지속화되었으며, 관음신앙의 핵심도량으로 확고히 자리잡게 되었다.

영어초록

This study is to investigate the origin of the faith in Avalokitesvara (Bodhisattva) of Naksan-sa Temple, located in Yangyang-gun, Gangwon-do Province, and how the faith melted into the local narrative literature. Upon the basis of a comparison of narrative elements of the faith in Avalokitesvara (Bodhisattva) which first appeared in the narrative literature, and was later passed down orally from generation to generation, we have confirmed that Naksan-sa Temple secures its cultural, historical, and religious status as a residing place of Avalokitesvara (Bodhisattva) as well as a center of the Avalokitesvara (Bodhisattva) faith.
The central elements which five narratives have in common are the foundation of Naksan-sa Temple and the narrative formation of the Avalokitesvara (Bodhisattva) faith. While the one is concerned with the justification of the foundation of the temple, the other is with a variety of expressions regarding the Avalokitesvara (Bodhisattva) faith. It is specially noted that the faith in Obong-san mountain deities is grafted onto the oral narratives. Narratives have it that five deities of Mt. Obong-san helped the establishment of Naksan-sa Temple, which symbolically implies that the mountain is not just the forehead but the exposure of the genuine body of Avalokitesvara (Bodhisattva).
Natural objects such as caves, pine trees, blue birds, and so on are the very exposure of the genuine body of Avalokitesvara (Bodhisattva) as well as the symbol of the bodhisattva as a god of change. With the combination of the two elements of buddha and natural objects, Naksan-sa Temple has been recognized as a holy place of transformation and exposure of Avalokitesvara (Bodhisattva), and furthermore regarded as one and the same body as the bodhisattva. In conclusion, through the foundation narratives of Naksan-sa Temple, we have found that achievements of the two eminent Buddhist monks (Eui-sang and Won-hyo) during the Shilla Dynasty enabled the popular belief that the temple is a residing place of Avalokitesvara (Bodhisattva). The scrutiny into narratives regarding the foundation of Naksan-sa Temple also shows us how the narrative element of pratītyasamutpāda (dependent arising or origination) and some interesting metamorphosis elements such as the statue of Avalokitesvara (Bodhisattva), the statue of Haesu Gwaneum, Hongryeon Cell, Gwaneum Cell, the pine tree of Gwaneum, and blue birds helped Naksan-sa keep its position as a central temple of the faith in Avalokitesvara (Bodhisattva)
