스코필드 박사에 대한 교회사적 평가 (An Evaluation on Dr. Frank W. Scofield in Korean Church History)

초록

스코필드(석호필)는 캐나다 장로교회의 선교사로 1916년에 세브란스 의학전문학교 교수로 내한하였다. 그는 광복 후인 1958년 한국을 국빈자격으로 방문하게 되고, 한국에 영구 귀화하였다. 전에도 그랬지만 이 때도 그의 한국인에 대한 사랑은 변하지 않았다.
스코필드의 이러한 행위는 교회사의 관점에서 볼 때 3가지 면으로 평가할 수 있을 것이다.
첫째, 그는 그리스도인 민족 운동가였다. 그는 민족대표 33인 중의 한 사람인 이갑성의 부탁을 받고 3·1운동의 현장을 사진으로 담아 전 세계에 알리는 데에 공을 세웠다. 그는 이뿐만 아니라, 3·1운동으로 고난을 받는 많은 한국인들을 찾아가 위로하였으며, 이들에 대해 잔인한 고문 등 비인도적인 만행을 저지른 일제의 야만적인 행위를 저지해줄 것을 촉구하는데 일익을 담당하였다. 3·1운동과 관련하여 스코필드 박사의 가장 의미 있는 일은 제암리 학살사건 현장을 직접 방문하여 그 참상을 전 세계에 알려 한국의 독립운동에 대한 세계적인 관심을 일으키게 한 것이다. 그의 독립운동에 대한지지 행동으로 그는 일제의 압력에 의해 한국에서 추방되었다.
둘째, 그는 3·1운동 계승의 교회 개혁자였다. 스코필드는 3․1운동에서 한국교회의 참 모습을 보았으며 언제나 한국교회가 3․1운동 당시의 모습으로 돌아가기를 희망하였다. 「기독교사상」1961년 3월호에 ‘한국교회 어제와 오늘’이라는 글에서 그는 한국교회를 ‘부패’로 진단하였다. 스코필드에 의하면 40년 전의 한국교회가 성경공부에 열심을 내고 희생정신이 살아있는 교회였다. 그러나 오늘의 한국교회는 세속화되고 성결성을 잃어버렸다는 것이다. 스코필드는 40년 전의 3·1운동의 정신을 교회가 회복해야 할 것을 역설하였다.
셋째, 그는 자비량 선교를 실천한 의료 선교사이자 교육가였다. 그가 처음 한국에 왔을 때는 캐나다 장로교 선교사로 왔지만, 광복 후에는 외국선교부와 관계를 맺은 것은 전혀 없었다. 그러나 선교사로서 사명을 다하였으며, 이 때부터 자비량 선교사역이 시작되었다. 그는 대학에서 가르쳤을 뿐만 아니라, 한국의 미래를 위해 젊은이들에게 영어성경공부반을 만들어 성경을 가르쳤다. 또한 사회사업기관을 정기적으로 후원하였고, 가난한 학생들을 위해 장학금을 마련하여 그들이 계속 공부할 수 있는 길을 열어주었다. 그는 자신에게는 최소한의 생활비를 쓰고, 이웃을 위해서 철저한 무소유의 삶을 실천하였다.
스코필드가 이러한 사역을 할 수 있었던 것은 무엇보다도 자신의 생활신조에 충실했기 때문이다. 그것은 배려의 길과 기도의 길이다.
스코필드가 한국에서 했던 독립운동과 선교 사역은 한 개인이 한 사역으로는 정말 놀랄만한 하다. 그러나 한국교회는 그의 사역에 대하여 높은 평가를 하지 못한 것이 사실이다. 그것은 그가 교단과 관계없이 활동했다는 점과 평신도였다는 것이다. 이제 한국교회는 스코필드의 생애와 사상을 발굴하고 이어 가도록 해야 할 것이다.

영어초록

In 1916 had come Dr. Frank W. Scofield as a Medical Professor at the Severance Medical College in Korea. In 1958 after the reacquisition of independence he visited Korea again but as a state guest, and then acquired the Korean citizenship. His love of Korea and the Korean People has been same now and then. His life as such can be evaluated with threefold frame of reference from Korean Church History.
First, he was a Christian man of nationalistic movement for the Korean independence. He contributed for enhancing it in publicizing throughout the whole world the real features of the movement by means of the pictures which he had taken at the very spots of the March-First Independence Movement at the request of Kap-Sung Lee, one of the 33 national representatives.
Besides, he visited and took care of many Koreans who had been suffered from severe punishment because of joining it. During this time he heard fact of Japanese putting Koreans to the brutal and barbarous tortures,which caused him to call out for stopping such things to the Japanese authority.
It was very meaningful in relation with the movement that he visited the place of massacre at Chaiamm-ni during this time and reported its misery to the whole world, and that he aroused global interest in the Korean independence. He was banished from Korea under the pressure of Japanese regime because of his support of the Independence Movement.
Second, he was a church reformer who succeeded the spirit of the Independence Movement. Dr. Scofield saw a real state of the Korean Church. He hoped that she should return to and stay all the time in the spirit of the movement. He diagnosed her as corrupted in an article with the title ‘Korean Church, Yesterday and Today’ in <Christianity Thought>printed in March 1961.
According to Dr. Scofield, the Korean Church, 40 years ago, was devoted to the Bible-study and was alive with a self-sacrificing spirit. But she at that time became secularized and lost power of sanctification. Dr.
Scofield emphasized on the fact that she should restore the spirit of the March-First Independence Movement 40 years ago.
Third, he has been a medical missionary and educator who accomplishes his mission at his own expense. At the first time, he had come to Korea as a missionary of the Canadian Presbyterian Church, but after reacquisition of the Independence he discarded relationship with any other foreign missionary societies. Though in such a status, he accomplished his mission with self support. Along with the main job of teaching at universities, he grouped young students and led them in the Bible study for hoping them to become future leaders of Korea. Also, he supported regularly social welfare organizations and provided the poor students with scholarship, so that they could complete their education. While he himself lived a thrift way of life, he practiced completely non-possessive life style for the sake of his neighbors.
It was faithful living up to his conviction on the Christian value as such that made him fulfilled a admirable life. In short, his whole life manifested a true way of sharing, caring, and praying.
His direct involvement in the Korean Independence Movement and missionary works is so marvelous as to one human being. However, the Korean Church has been neglecting in the right evaluation. As for me the only reason for that is due to his independent missionary works as of lay person outside of any denominational relation. Now, it is the urgent task that the Korean Church is to explore his life and thought, and to apply them to herself.
