초록

이 글은 연산 개태사의 역사문화 소재를 사례로 역사지리와 지역문화사의 층위 형성 문제, 지역문
화의 종합적 해석방법을 모색한 시론적 연구이다. 즉 개태사라는 역사문화 현장이 어떻게 지역의 문
화사로 연결되면서 존재하는가를 설명하는데 주안점을 두고 있다.
역사민속학 연구는 인접 학문과의 학제적 연구와 종합적 해석으로 學으로서의 존립 가능성과 강
점을 모색하고 있는바, 이러한 문제의식의 해결과정에서 역사민속학의 자료 동원과 방법론은 매우
유용하다고 생각한다. 본 연구에서는 개태사 창건이전의 연산지역 문화사적 특성과 개태사 지역의
전략지리적 성격, 그리고 고려 태조 왕건의 삼한통일과 관련된 호국, 도참적 성격, 그리고 마지막으로
조선후기 민중신앙과 개태사를 살펴 이를 지역문화사의 맥락에서 이해하려고 하였다.

영어초록

This contemporary study explored the issues of layers of historical geography and
local cultural history and the comprehensive interpretive methods of local culture with
the case of the history and culture of Gaetae Buddhist Temple in Yeonsan. It placed
a focus on explaining how Gaetae Buddhist Temple, a scene of history and culture, was
connected to the local cultural history in the course of its existence.
The study made attempts to examine the characteristics of Yeonsan in terms of
cultural history before the establishment of Gaetae Buddhist Temple, the strategic
geographical aspects of Yeonsan, the aspects of Gaetae Buddhist Temple in terms of
defending the nation and predicting future good and ill luck in relation to Goryeo’s
King Taejo Wang-geon uniting Samhan, and finally the popular religion in late Chosun
and its connection to Gaetae Buddhist Temple. It also reviewed those issues in the
context of local cultural history.
In memory of the great feat of uniting Samhan by King Taejo Wang-geon, Gaetae
Buddhist Temple was built as a massive Buddhist temple under his supervision. Since
his death, the temple held his portrait scroll and thus played a very critical role
throughout Goryeo. It also kept an ideological position of defending the country and
delivering the oracles.
The investigator reviewed the characteristics of Gaetae Buddhist Temple in terms of cultural history by dividing them into the layers of geographical background, historical
flow, and transmission. The study appears to be a simple enumeration of data and lacks
in various aspects with many parts unarranged completely. But as it’s presupposed in
the introduction, it’s necessary to take another look at Gaetae Buddhist Temple in
relation to local cultural history. The study will hopefully serve as the starting point
of following efforts.
Wrapping up the study, the investigator calls the attention of the readers to what
should be supplemented or noticed in future. First, there should be interest in the forces
of Yeonsan and their movements at the time of building Gaetae Buddhist Temple or
at the end of Shilla and the beginning of Goryeo. Second, there is a need to study the
history of Buddhism and Goryeo. Considering the national status of Gaetae Buddhist
Temple, its growth throughout Goryeo should be supplemented in terms of ideology,
human connections and remains so that its implications in terms of cultural history and
its influences in Nonsan can be understood. Third, it’s meaningful in its own sense to
study the current Gaetae Buddhist Temple and its repair during the Japanese rule. But
it’s more essential to examine its characters during Chosun Dynasty in the aspects of
Buddhist faith and popular religions.
Fourth, it’s also necessary to research Hwangsanbeol and the castle remains and
transportation routes around Gaetae Buddhist Temple to shed more light onto the
temple’s characters in terms of strategic geography. Finally, there should be efforts to
make the Confucian relics of Yeonsan resources in relation to Hoseoyehak and its
academic connections emphasized in the last chapter. And it’s also needed to
reilluminate the characters of Yeon-san in terms of prehistoric and ancient culture based
on tables and to connect the results to the remains of Gaetae Buddhist Temple.
