죽지사(竹枝詞)의 한·중 비교 연구 (A Comparative Study of the Chinese Zhuzhici and the Korean Chukchisa)

초록

가사는 한국 전통성악곡의 한 갈래로, 한국의 우수한 음악문화를 대표할 수 있는 음악형식이라 할 수 있으나 이에 대한 체계적인 연구는 아직도 많이 부족하다 할 수 있다. 이러한 이유로 필자는 본 논문에서 12가사중의 하나인 죽지사(竹枝詞)를 중심으로 연구를 하였고, 중국의 죽지사를 통해 가사 죽지사에 대한 이해를 넓히려고 한다. 이러한 결론을 정리하여 보면 다음과 같다.
지금까지 가사 죽지사는 19세기 후반에 새로 등장한 음악으로만 여겨왔으며, 그에 대한 정확한 기원과 중국 죽지사와의 관계는 아직까지 알 수 없다. 때문에 필자는 먼저 중국 죽지사의 네 가지 기원설을 설명하였고, 유우석으로 인해 죽지사란 민가가 문인들의 관심을 받게 되어 널리 전파되는 계기를 설명하였다. 또한 당나라부터 청나라까지의 각 시대별 죽지사의 창작을 발견하였으며, 시대마다 서로 다른 특징을 가지고 있다는 것도 알게 되었다. 당나라의 죽지사는 서정적인 내용과 자연환경에 대한 묘사를 위주로 하고 있는 반면에 송나라의 죽지사는 역사의 회고와 감개, 현실사회의 비판, 신세기탁 등을 묘사하고 있은 것이 가장 중요한 특징으로 볼 수 있다. 명· 청시기에는 죽지사가 외국에까지 전파되어 외국을 소재로 하여 창작된 죽지사도 많았다.
한국에서 창작된 죽지사는 거의 1000수 정도에 달하며, 가장 오래된 것은 조선 초기 김맹성의 가천죽지사이다. 조선시대의 죽지사는 전기와 후기에 서로 다른 특징을 띄고 있고, 전기의 죽지사는 당나라의 것과 거의 비슷하여 한반도의 문물과 자연경관을 주된 내용으로 삼고 있는 반면에 조선후기의 죽지사는 한반도의 풍속을 그대로 기술하는 것도 있고, 외국의 풍물과 문화를 다룬 내용도 적지 않게 발견할 수 있다. 특히 조선후기에 들어와서 연작형식의 죽지사를 많이 발견할 수 있는데, 이는 청나라의 죽지사와 같은 양상을 띄고 있다.
또한, 두 나라 죽지사의 선율을 비교하기 위해 먼저 비교악보를 선택해야 하는데, 가사 죽지사의 고악보가 전혀 발견되지 않은 관계로 현행의 죽지사를 사용할 수밖에 없었고, 중국의 죽지사도 마찬가지로 청나라 『구궁대성남북사궁보』의 죽지가악보가 가장 오래된 것이므로 채택하였다. 그리고 『구궁대성남북사궁보』의 첫 번째 죽지가는 산곡(散曲)의 형식이어서 첫 번째의 죽지가로 사용하기로 하였다. 두 나라 죽지사의 선율을 비교하여 보면 비록 양자의 시대차이와 두 나라의 음악변화양상이 서로 많은 차이를 가지고 있는데도 불구하고 제1구사설의 각 글자의 첫 번째 음에서 “곤”과 “금(禁)”을 제외하면 나머지는 거의 같은 것이다. 바꾸어 말하면 『구궁대성남북사궁보』 첫 번째 죽지가와 가사 죽지사의 제1구 선율은 어느 정도의 연관관계를 가지고 있다고 할 수 있다. 더 나아가 가사 죽지사의 선율도 중국 죽지사의 선율과 일정한 관련이 있다고 추측된다. 이러한 이유로 가사 죽지사가 19세기 후반에 비로소 새로 등장하였지만 가사와 선율의 측면에서 보면 그 역사는 이보다 훨씬 길다고 할 수 있다.

영어초록

Kasa 歌詞 is a kind of Korean traditional vocal music. It can be said to be a form of music that can represent the outstanding musical culture of Korea, but systematic study thereof is quite insufficient. For this reason, in this paper, the author focused on Chukchisa 竹枝詞 (Zhuzhici in Chinese), one of the 12 kasa, and tried to examine the Chinese Zhuzhici to gain a better understanding of Chukchisa. The conclusion can be summarized as follows:Until now Chukchisa has been regarded only as music that appeared in the late 19th century, and its correct origin and relationship Chinese Zhuzhici are not known yet. Accordingly, the author started by explaining the four origins of Chinese Zhuzhici, and mentioned that it was thanks to Liu Yuxi (Yu U-sŏk in Sino-Korean) that a folk song called Zhuzhici got the attention of men of letters and was widely propagated. Also, the author discovered Zhuzhici creations from the Tang 唐 dynasty to the Qing 淸 dynasty, and learned that they had different characteristics from age to age. Zhuzhici of the Tang dynasty contains lyrical contents and mostly depicts the nature, whereas that of the Song 宋 dynasty describes historical recollections and emotions, criticism of the society, and lamentation. During the Ming 明 and Qing dynasty, Zhuzhici was spread to foreign countries, and many Zhuzhici’s about foreign countries were created.
Zhuzhici’s composed in Korea amount to almost 1,000, and the oldest one is the Kachŏn Chukchisa 가전 죽지사 composed by Kim Maeng-sŏng 김맹성 in the early days of the Chosŏn dynasty. The Chukchisa during the early Chosŏn dynasty have different characteristics than those of the latter Chosŏn dynasty. As the Chukchisa of the early Chosŏn Dynasty are similar to those of the Tang dynasty, most of them depict the culture and nature of the Korean peninsula. In contrast, those of the latter Chosŏn dynasty describe the customs of the Korean peninsula, and some deal with the institutions, customs and culture of foreign countries. In particular, in the latter Chosŏn Dynasty many serial Chukchisa are discovered, which are similar to those of the Qing dynasty.
Also, a comparative musical score must be selected to compare the melodies of the two countries’ Chukchisa. As no old musical score of the Chukchisa has not been discovered, the existing Chukchisa had to be used. Chinese Zhuzhici, was no different. As the musical score of the Zhuzhige of Jiugong dacheng nanbeici gongpu during the Qing dynasty was the oldest, it was selected. As the first Zhuzhige of Jiugong dacheng nanbeici gongpu had the san qu 散曲 format, the author decided to use the first Zhuzhige. When the melodies of the two countries’ Zhuzhici, despite the difference in age and the variations in the changes of music of the two countries, excluding 'kon' and 'jin' 禁 from the first sound of the first characters of the first phrase in the article, the rest is almost the same. In other words, the melody of the first Zhuzhige of Jiugong dacheng nanbeici gongpu and the melody of the first phrase of kasa Chukchisa can be said to be related to each other to a certain extent. Furthermore, the melody of kasa Chukchisa is thought to be somewhat related to the melody of Chinese Zhuzhici. For this reason, though it was only until in the latter half of the 19th century that kasa Chukchisa made its appearance, its history can be said to be much longer from the viewpoint of lyrics and melody.
