초록

One of the representative styles of literature in the Song Dynasty is Literary Sketches (Biji, 筆記). The abundant contents, as well as the voluminous quantity, help readers understand the culture of the Song Dynasty. However, the literary sketches merely took a peripheral status compared to the major literature genres of poetry or prose. The style of literary sketches was different from that of orthodox literature, and the genre could not join the ranks of major literature genres due to its characteristics of optionality. Similarly, literary sketches were not recognized as historical sources because they were not considered official history, although they provide rich information that reflects the times. Even the writers of literary sketches seemed to regard their works as insignificant, and they identified the works with gossip or ramble. However, the literati of the Song Dynasty nonetheless engaged in writing literary sketches and left massive literary works showing a different expression of emotion that could not be seen in orthodox literature genres. The genre of literary sketch claimed itself to be a B-class literature; therefore, it was free from the solemn writing focused on the public self. This thesis focuses on how the literati of the Song Dynasty expressed their emotions, which had not been expressed in the conventional style, by choosing the literary sketches form. In particular, the boldness, delicacy, and affirmation of desire, shown in the expressions of joy, anger, sorrow, and pleasure in the literary sketches of diary style or list of articles style, is brought to light. An attempt to find the cause of this trend in the social atmosphere and the development of literature is made. The cause can also be found in the duplicity of the Literati in the Song Dynasty, who led life not only as a public self, but also as an individual self.
