인지메타포(Cognitive Metaphor)의 이론적 관점을 통해 본 마태복음의 빵-메타포와 의미 연구－마태복음 14-15장을 중심으로 (The Metaphor of Bread in the Gospel of Matthew with Cognitive Metaphor Theory － Focused on Matthew 14-15)

초록

인지메타포(cognitive metaphor) 이론에 따르면, 메타포는 인간의 역사적문화적 경험, 사회적 기억, 그리고 이념과 신념에 의해 형성된 인지개념 (cognitive conception)에 기인한다. 따라서 특정 문서에 표현된 메타포는 독 자의 인지개념, 역사적 기억과 경험에 기초하여 문서의 문자적 표현 이면 에서 상징적 의미와 그에 상응하는 이데올로기적 비전을 표출한다. 이러 한 관점에서, 본 논문은 마태복음의 빵(a;rtoj)과 빵을 쪼개는 행위를 인지 메타포의 이론적 관점에 비추어 살펴본다. 특별히 본 논문은 마태복음 14-15장에 등장하는 무리를 먹이신 두 이야기(14:12-21; 15:29-39)와 가나 안 여인 이야기(15:21-28)를 중심으로 빵-메타포의 문학적 역할과 상징적 의미를 고찰한다. 위 본문의 빵을 메타포로 인식하여 해석할 때, 빵의 메 타포적 개념과 이미지는 마태복음의 중요한 문학적 모티브가 될 뿐만 아810❙신약논단 제22권 제4호․2015년 겨울니라, 마태복음의 전체 서사를 해석하는 중요한 해석학적 틀을 제공한다. 마태복음의 빵-메타포는 이스라엘 고유의 역사와 정체성, 그리고 그들만 의 종교적 경험과 예언적 비전에 의해 형성된 인지개념에 기초해 있으며, 빵을 쪼개는 메타포적 행위를 통하여 예수를 따르던 무리들, 즉 마태 공동 체의 정체성과 이념적 비전을 표출한다. 무리를 먹이는 두 기적이야기를 통하여 예수가 군중들과 함께 빵을 쪼개고 나눌 때, 빵-메타포는 독자의 인지개념에 기초한 상징적 의미를 표출한다: 적대의 종식, 계약의 형성, 그 리고 실제적 공동체의 형성. 여기서 마태복음은 모든 종교-사회적 적대와 경계를 뛰어넘어 예수를 중심으로 새롭게 연대하는 대안적 공동체의 실현 과 새로운 정체성의 형성을 묘사한다. 그리고 이에 상응하는 종말론적 비 전과 이데올로기적 신념을 선언한다. 특별히 두 이야기 사이에서 샌드위치 구조를 형성하며 등장하는 가나안 여인의 문학적 역할은 종교-사회적 장 벽, 성(gender), 계급(class), 민족(ethnicity)의 경계를 넘어 빵-메타포의 의미를 강화한다. 이러한 관점에서 마태복음의 빵은 단순히 굶주린 배를 채우는 음식, 혹은 기적 이야기를 전개하는 자료가 아니라, 예수의 공동체 형성과 정체성, 그리고 공동체의 종말론적 비전과 이데올로기를 담아내고 있는 저 자의 문학적 전략이자 독자의 인지 개념을 자극하는 메타포이다. 본 논문 은 인지메타포의 이론적 접목을 통하여 성서 메타포에 대한 새로운 이해 와 성서해석의 또 다른 해석학적 전략이 제공되기를 희망한다.

영어초록

Metaphors are rooted in physical and cultural experience, social memory, and human cognition according to the cognitive metaphor theory. So, based on the reader’s cognition, experience, and historical memory, the metaphor in a certain text presents a symbolic meaning and its relevant ideological vision beyond the literal meaning of the text. From this perspective, this article investigates the Matthean use of bread (a;rtoj) and the act of the breaking of bread in light of the cognitive metaphor theory. Especially, the article concentrates on the metaphoric meaning of bread and its relevant feeding scenes in the Gospel of Matthew 14-15: the feeding of five thousand (14:12- 21), the Canaanite Woman (15:21-28), and the feeding of four thousand (15:29-39). When bread is recognized as a metaphor in these narrative units, it reveals a significant literary motif and interpretive frame for the Gospel of Matthew as a whole. The metaphor of bread in Matthew’s gospel implicitly connects to Israel’s indigenous sense of identity, religious imagination, and prophetic vision, while presenting the reconstruction of the communal identity of Jesus’ followers through the metaphoric act of the breaking of bread. When Jesus breaks the bread with the crowds in the two feeding narratives (14-15), the metaphor of bread present symbolic meanings: the end of hostility, making a covenant, and an actual formation of community. Here Matthean Jesus forms an alternative community with his followers beyond socio-religious boundaries. Especially, the significant role of the Canaanite woman intensifies the meaning of the bread, which invites all people into God's kingdom regardless any socio-religious barrier, gender, class, ethnicity, and the like, through the sandwich structure of the narrative within two feeding stories. In this regard, the bread in the Gospel of Matthew is not the food for human hunger or literary source for the miracle story, but the metaphor of bread as a narrative strategy presents the establishment of Jesus’ community and envisions the prophetic fulfill- ment of the restoration of Israel and God’s kingdom beyond socio- religious/ethnic boundaries. I hope this article present another hermeneutic strategy for reading the gospels with the cognitive metaphor theory.
