초록

The most striking feature of Lawrence’s literary world is its dualism, and he sets out his concept of duality in terms of the male and female principles, and it becomes not only a focus of Lawrence’s thought but also the central principles of his aesthetics. His dualistic world is composed of two polarities of dark and light which symbolized spirit and flesh respectively. These two polarized worlds are always prone to seek balance, or conciliation in the state of conflicts and fights. Paradoxically the perfect balance of the fight is the ontological way of his dualistic elements. These two worlds come to fulfil balance by means of a spark of Holy Ghost, namely sexual union of man and woman. There are many common factors between Lawrence’s dualism and the Oriental one of dark and light.
The Oriental dualism in the Book of Changes and Tao Te Ching is composed of the two cosmic elements, dark and light. These two elements seek integration by way of confrontation and change. Such an integration and harmony of the universe is governed by Taeguk or Tao that is the source of generation of the cosmos. There is a parallel between the two principles of the East and West in that the two polarized worlds seek balance by means of Holy Ghost in Lawrence, and Taeguk or Tao in the East which have similar properties to govern them. It has been noted by many scholars of the two worlds that they share one thing in common: binary properties of dark and light. It is worth studying about it in order to improve the understanding between the two worlds.
