쉬빙(徐冰)의 문자 작업이 함축한 문화정치적 의미 (Culture-Political Connotation of Xu Bing’s Text-Based Works)

초록

본 논문은 쉬빙(徐冰)의 문자 작업을 문화와의 역학적 관계 속에서 고찰한 것이다. 중국 사회에서 문화는 연속적인 혁명의 물결 속에서 반복적으로 등장한 화두였으며, 마오의 사망 이후에는 그 토대부터 근본적으로 점검된 개념이었다. 전형적인 식자층 가정에서 성장한 그는 문화혁명기와 문화열, 그리고 미국으로의 이주라는 역사적 분기점들을 거치면서, 문화를 곧 언어라는 상징체계와 동형으로 인식하게 되었다. 특히 문자는 혁명기 동안 쉬빙이 숙명적으로 관계 맺어야 했던 언어 체계로서, 그의 작업이 판화에서 벗어나기 시작했을 때 주요 매체로 자리하게 되었다. 쉬빙은 자신의 삶 전체를 관통했던 ‘문화’라는 포괄적인 주제를 다름 아닌 ‘문자’를 통해 사유하고 가시화하였다.
본 논문에서 또 한 가지 주목한 것은 그의 작업에 제시되고 있는 문화와 문자의 관계가 단선적 구조로 환원될 수 없다는 점이었다. 혁명기, 사상적 계도라는 명분하에 시행된 언어 통제나 지식층에 가해진 박해, 그리고 이주 후 낯선 문화적 환경에의 노출 등은 그로 하여금 양자 사이에 권력의 문제가 필연적으로 내포되어 있음을 자각하게 만들었다. 이에 본 논문은 그의 작업에서 다뤄지고 있는 문화와 문자의 관계를 권력의 문제에 연계시켜 해석해 보았다. 또한 본문을 구성함에 있어서는, 쉬빙이 문화와 문자 사이의 역학을 비평할 뿐만 아니라, 그에 실천적 개입을 시도하였다는 점을 도출하고자, 상징적인 작업에서 구체적인 문제의식을 표출한 작업으로 전개되도록 기술하였다.
먼저 본 논문은 문화 구성 요소인 문자를 ‘문자언어’라는 보편적 개념으로 상정하여 다룬 작품들을 분석하였다. 쉬빙은 ‘살아 있는 글자’라는 다소 이상적 형태의 문자를 구현함으로써, 문화를 역동적으로 전환시키기 위한 선행 조건을 제시하고자 하였다. 또한 작업에 등장하는 텍스트, 서사, 책 등의 인쇄된 문자들을 문화 재생산이라는 기능적 측면에서 살펴보았다. 그는 활자 공간의 질서를 교란하거나 텍스트의 구조를 해제함으로써, 문화 변동과 재구성의 가능성을 실험하였다. 마지막으로 이질적 체계의 문자들을 충돌시킨 작업들을 통해, 문화에 관여된 힘의 구조들이 구체적인 논의의 대상으로 가시화되었음을 확인하였다. 중국과 서구 양자로부터 축출되는 과정을 경험한 그는 혼합 문자를 고안함으로써, 언어, 정체성, 민족국가의 순수성에 의문을 제기하였다.
본 논문은 이러한 분석을 통해, 쉬빙 작업의 궁극적 목표가 문화에 대한 인식의 전환에 있었음을 살펴보았다. 그의 작업은 직접적인 정치적 발언의 통로는 아니지만, 문화 속에 내재되어 있는 저항의 계기들을 들춰낸다는 점에서 문화정치적인 의미를 함축한다고 요약할 수 있다. 또한 매체적 측면에서, 미술에서의 변화된 문자의 위상을 가늠케 한다는 점, 그리고 주제적 측면에서, 미술과 문화의 밀착된 관계를 재확인시킨다는 점을 쉬빙 작업의 미술사적 의의로 도출하였다.

영어초록

This study examined Xu Bing’s text-based works in the dynamic relation with culture. In Chinese society, culture is an issue that has emerged repeatedly in the successive waves of revolution, and particularly since the death of Mao the concept of culture has been reexamined fundamentally. Xu Bing, who grew in a typical family of the literate class, came to perceive culture to be identical with language as a symbolic system while going through historical turning points such as the Cultural Revolution, the Culture Fever, and immigration to the U.S. In particular, written character as a language system that he had to be involved in as his fate settled as a major medium of his works when his works began to get away from prints.
Through ‘written character,’ Xu Bing reasoned and visualized the comprehensive subject ‘culture’ that penetrated through the whole of his life.
Another noteworthy point in this study is that the relation between culture and written word presented in his works cannot be reduced to a linear structure. Language control or persecution on intellects carried out on the pretext of ideological enlightenment during the period of revolution, exposure to strange cultural environment after immigration, etc. made him aware that the issue of power was inevitably involved in the relation between culture and written word. Thus, this study attempted to interpret the relation between the two covered in his works in connection to the issue of power.
Moreover, this study was structured to develop from symbolic works to works for revealing specific problems in order to prove that Xu Bing criticized the dynamics between the two and tried practical interventions between them.
First of all, this study analyzed Xu Bing’s works that raised script, which is a component of culture, as universal concept ‘written language.’ Xu Bing tried to suggest preconditions for transforming culture dynamically by realization scripts of a somewhat ideal form called ‘living words.’ In addition,this study approached printed words of texts, narratives, books, etc. appearing in his works from the functional aspect of cultural reproduction. By disturbing the order of type space or deconstructing the structure of texts, he experimented on the possibility of cultural change and restructuring. Lastly,this study confirmed that the structures of power involved in culture were visualized as specific subjects of discussion through his works that scripts of heterogeneous systems collided. Experiencing the process of being expelled by both China and the West, he invented hybrid scripts and raised a question on the purity of language, identity, and nation states.
Through these analyses, this study suggested that the ultimate goal of Xu Bing’s works was to change the perception of culture. Although his works were not a direct channel of political expressions, we can say that they connote a culture-political meaning in that they reveal the motives of resistance inherent in culture. Moreover, this study derived the significance of Xu Bing’s works in art history in that they present the changed status of written language in fine arts in the aspect of media, and reconfirm the close relation between fine arts and culture in the aspect of themes.
