安國善의 『比律賓戰史』와 번역 저본 『南洋之風雲』 비교 연구 (A Comparative Study of Ahn Kook-sun's Beeyulbin jeonsa and the original text, Namyangjipoongwoon)

초록

본고는 이제까지 연구사에서 다루어지지 못했던 『比律賓戰史』의 번역 저본인 『南洋之風雲』을 중심으로,『南洋之風雲』과의 비교를 통해 다른 맥락에서 번역된 『比律賓戰史』의 특수한 지점들을 조망해보고자 했다. 『南洋之風雲』은 마리아노 폰세가 스페인어로 저술한 CUESTION FILIPINA를 미야모토 헤이쿠로우와 후지다 스에타카가 공역한 것이다. 이 작품은 일본에서 체류하던 중국유학생에 의해 상해출판사에서 출간되었으며, 역시 일본에서 유학하고 보성관의 번역원에서 활동하던 안국선에 의해 조선에서도 출판되었다.
『南洋之風雲』에는 ‘비율빈독립문제의 진상’이라는 부제에서 볼 수 있듯이, 필리핀이 미국의 식민지로 떨어지게 된 경위가 순차적으로 소개되어 있다. 『比律賓戰史』는 원작을 밝혀놓지 않았지만, 구성과 내용면에서 『南洋之風雲』과 동일하다. 다만 차이가 있다면, 내용을 압축한 수사나 일본의 연원을 조선의 연원으로 바꾸었다는 것, 그리고 세세하게 나열된 인물의 소개가 대표적인 인물을 제외하고는 생략되었다는 것뿐이다. 이렇게 동일한 『比律賓戰史』가 어떻게 원작과 다른 의미를 지니게 되는 것일까. 이는 출판배경이 된 정치적 상황과 번역의 행위에 대한 고찰로 해명될 수 있다. 특히 후자의 시각에서 볼 때, 단순히 독립을 지향하는 역사 교과서로서의 고정된 인식을 탈피할 수 있다. 거칠게 말해 안국선의 번역은, 이미 원작과 거리를 확보한 다시쓰기의 형태로 재현되었다.
러일전쟁을 전후로 확연히 뒤바뀐 일본의 정세와 맞물려, 일본 측에 잠식되어간 조선의 정치적 상황은, 어디까지나 미국의 식민지로 전락한 필리핀의 사정과 다르지 않았다. 즉 필리핀의 좌절된 독립의 이야기 속에 비판된 미국이라는 제국은, 곧 조선을 억압하는 일본이라는 제국에 대한 비판의 시선으로 연결되었다. 이 점에서 『比律賓戰史』는 『南洋之風雲』과 동일하지만 결코 완전히 포개질 수 없는 격차를 지닌다. 일본어가 조선어로 옮겨지는 과정에서 자연히 빚어질 수밖에 없는 차이에 대한 문제는 번역의 행위가 정치적으로 독자의 특성에 따라 변용되지 않을 수 없는 운명임을 시사해준다.

영어초록

This paper intends to inspect Beeyulbin jeonsa(比律賓戰史, Philippine War History) for its peculiar and remarkable characteristics. Beeyulbin jeonsa's original text is Namyangjipoongwoon(南洋之風雲, The Storm of South Sea) which has not been dealt with in the studies. Namyangjipoongwoon, translated by Miyamoto Heykuro and Hujida Setaka, is a translation of CUESTION FILIPINA written in Spanish by Mariano Ponce. This work was published in Sanghai Publishers by a Chinese student studying in Japan. And Ahn Kook-seon, who had also studied in Japan and was a translator of Translation Institute of Bosungkwan, translated it into Korean in Chosun.
Namyangjipoongwoon, the subtitle of which is 'the Truth of Philippine Independence Issue', showed separately and gradually why and how Philippine had become a colony of the United States. Beeyulbin jeonsa didn't confess its original text, but it shared the plot and the contents with Namyangjipoongwoon. It just has a few differences. One is that it used a rhetoric to compress the contents. Another is that it changed the origin of Japan into the origin of Chosun. The other is that it presented several representative characters omitting a lot of characters in the original. What's the meaning of this translation? What's the meaning of Beeyulbin jeonsa different from Namyangjipoongwoon. To answer these questions, we will investigate the political situation and give careful consideration to the activitiy of translating. Especially with the latter' view, we can escape from a fixed idea that Beeyulbin jeonsa was a history textbook for students which the intellectuals tried to implant a spirit of independence into. Speaking previously, Ahn Kook-seon's translation was a re-writing originated but distant from the original text.
Chosun' political situation wasn't different from Philippine's because Chosun became gradually a colony of Japan at that time, which had won the Russo-Japanese War and had acquired the leading power in the international society. As it were, the United States as a expansionist was the same with Japan. Namyangjipoongwoon's critical attitude to US was adopted equally in Beeyulbin jeonsa, in which, of course, the critical attitude was targeted to Japan. From this point, Beeyulbin jeonsa is not only the same with Namyangjipoongwoon but also has the difference that cannot be ignored. This sameness and difference cannot help coinciding whenever a Japanese text is translated into Korean. It's perhaps a destiny of translation, which usually transforms the original text with the political purpose.
