영조 후궁 暎嬪李氏의 생애와 위상－ 壬午 大處分을 중심으로 － (On the Life and the Ritual Status of Yi Yeong-bin(暎嬪李氏), the Minor Queen of King Yeong-jo(英祖) - focussed on the Grand Disposition in 1762 -)

초록

본고는 영조의 후궁 영빈이씨의 생애와 위상을 살펴본 연구로서, 그녀의 생애 가운데에 임오 대처분의 사건을 중심으로 살펴보았다.
이를 위해 이 글은 주로 「묘지」와 「행장」 그리고 『한중록』 등의 자료를 활용하였다.
영빈이씨(1696~1764)는 사도세자의 생모이자 정조의 할머니다. 그녀는 어린 나이에 궁녀로 입궁했다가 영조의 총애를 얻어 정1품 빈에까지 오른 최고의 여성이었지만 생전에 참혹하게 죽어가는 아들의 모습을 지켜보아야 했던 비운의 여성이었다. 보통 ‘임오화변’으로 불리는 이 사건에서 분명 그녀는 영조에게 아들의 비행을 알려주고 죽음을 요청하는 등 결정적인 역할을 했다. 이 때문에 종묘사직과 국가의안위를 온전히 보존할 수 있었다. 임오년에 보여준 그녀의 판단력과 결단력은 어린 나이에 입궁한후 20년 간 궁궐에서 지내면서 궁관의 경험으로 터득한 결과였다. 즉, 그녀의 의로운 행동은 어려서부터 총명하여 궁관으로서 뛰어난 업무수행능력을 발휘하였고 궁중예법을 잘 아는 왕실여성으로서 근신한몸가짐과 언행을 항상 유지하였으며, 영조의 후궁으로서 내조자의 역할을 수행하였기에 가능한 일이었다.
사후에 영빈이씨는 그 공로를 인정받아 영조는 물론 고종 때까지종사의 대의를 위한 것임을 천명한 영조의 유지를 받들어서 지속적으로 예우되었다. 다만 손자 정조는 사당의 칭호를 의열에서 선희로 고쳐 임오 의리를 평가 절하했지만, 義烈墓-義烈宮에서 綏慶園-宣禧宮 의 체제에 적용된 그녀의 무덤과 사당은 다른 후궁과는 분명 높은위격을 갖춘 것이다.
그러나 오늘날 영빈이씨에 대한 평가는 임오 대처분 요청의 진실여부를 떠나 영조의 평가와는 달리 ‘비정한 어머니’로 평가받고 있다.
이제 그녀에 대한 재조명이 필요할 것으로 생각된다.

영어초록

This study is to examine the life and the ritual status of Yi Yeong-bin, the Minor Queen of King Yeong-jo, which is focussed on the grand disposition of the death to her son, the crown prince Sado(思悼世子), in 1762.
Yi Yeong-bin(1696~1764) was the real mother of the crown prince Sado and the real grand mother of King Jeong-jo(正祖). She was sent to the royal palace to be a court lady when she was a young girl. She could be promoted her position as high as the first court rank and got the love of the King Yeong-jo, which enabled her to be a leading concubine, the minor queen in reality. But she suffered a great pain of her son’s miserable death in 1762. In the incident which was called the Grand Disposition, she obviously did her decisive role of informing her son’s evil deeds to the king to request the disposition of death. Though the Grand Disposition was miserable itself, it could save the kingdom from the chaotic collapse.
The sensible estimation and decision of Yi Yeong-bin in the disposition of 1762 might be driven from her long experience in the palace life. And it was possible because she had excellent talents to do the works properly in the palace as a court lady who was trained with courtesy and manners. She was always prudent in her behaviors and speeches so as to be a good minor queen consort.
As her role in the Grand Disposition was recognized and valuated to be rightful and meritorious to the kingdom by her husband King Yeong-jo, she was honored to be respected high from her death in 1764 to the end of the kingdom. The ritual tomb name Euiyeol-myo(義烈墓) and the ritual shrine name Euiyeol-gung(義烈宮) were dedicated to her with the meanings of the justice and dignity by King Yeong-jo. However her deeds were devaluated by King Jeong-jo who was the Son of the crown prince Sado, and the ritual names were changed mediocrely as Sukyeng-won(綏慶園) and Seonhi-gung(宣禧宮). Though she was devaluated by her grandson, the ritual status of her tomb and shrine was nevertheless very high compared to those of the other minor queens.
In spite of the valuation of King Yeong-jo, she has been discoursed to be a insensate mother till nowadays. The full understandings and the proper illuminations would be needed to recover the real aspects of the minor queen Yi Yeong-bin.
