百濟 泗비期 石室의 設計와 構造系統論 (The Architecture of Stone Chamber Tombs from the Sabi Baekche Period)

본고에서는 백제 각 지역에서 축조된 사비기 석실의 규격․정형성을 유지하기 위한 매개물, 즉 분묘 축조 공인집단과 설계도의 존재를 추정하였다. 각지에 분포하는 석실 유형과 거기에 사용된 석재의 종류는 사비도성 주변에 형성된 도성 관련 매장지에서 그 유례를 찾을 수 있는 것이 대부분이기 때문에 중앙과 각 지방 사이의 유대와 기술의 전달을 상정할 수 있다. 본고에서는 사비기 석실 구축 과정의 복원을 통해 어떤 공정에 전문적인 기술이 필요했는지 살펴본 다음에 측벽을 기준으로 Ⅰ∼Ⅴ 유형, 석재 가공 정도를 A∼D로 분류하고 각 유형별로 간취되는 중앙과 지방 사이의 연계를 석실 축조기술의 ‘계통’으로 파악하였다.
도읍 주변에 입지하는 석실과 동일한 기술계통(유형)을 인정할 수 있는 석실이 분포하는 지역은 한성․웅진기 이래의 백제 구 영역의 범위와 대체로 일치되는데, 그 범위에는 중앙에서 분묘 축조 공인집단이 파견되었을 가능성이 높다고 보았다. 또한 석실분에 대한 분석을 통해 그러한 지역의 외곽에 백제 지방통치의 거점인 方이 설치되었을 가능성을 지적하였다. 한편, 중앙과 공통되는 구조를 가지면서 석재 가공이 치졸한 석실의 경우는 공인 자체의 파견이라기보다는 설계도를 통해 재지 공인이 축조한 것으로 보았다.

영어초록

This study examines the hierarchy and distribution of stone tombs from the Sabi Baekche period. It is assumed that the social status of the deceased in life will be reflected in his or her tomb in death, and attempts are made to associate these burials with the social status and organization of the local elite.
Previous research on the regional administrative system of Sabi Baekche has generally focused on historical documents and the location of fortress sites in an attempt to reconstruct the Obang-je (五方制) administrative system. This study looks at the location of higher-ranked stone chamber tombs within the Sabi Baekche territory and considers the possibility that officials dispatched from the central government may have been buried in the regional areas they administered. Based on this, possible locations for the 'Bang (方)' of the Obang-je (五方制) system are identified, with the exception of Nambang (南方).
The Obang-je (五方制) system appears to have been limited to the area annexed in thefirst wave of Sabi Baekche expansion. It is suggested that, in addition to acting as a military stronghold and providing an administrative foothold, each 'Bang (方)' may have functioned as an important mechanism of control within the regional areas that had maintained a strong sense of autonomy. As the subordinate units of the 'Bang (方)' the 'Gun (郡)' and 'Seung (城)' have yet to be identified, it was through the distribution of stone chamber tombs that the regional organization of the Sabi Baekche period could be inferred.
Based on the result of the analysis, it is argued that the administrative rank and local-government hierarchy of the Sabi Baekche period was represented in the structure of the stone chamber tombs. It is also observed that, in the period of the early to mid seventhcentury AD, when the Baekche kingdom was on the verge of collapse, the number and scale of stone chamber tombs was reduced significantly. The architecture of these stone tombs also appears to have become cruder. The decline of stone chamber tombs is thus thought to be associated with the centralization of power in the Sabi Paekche period.
