廣開土王碑의 性格과 立碑의 意義 (Nature of the Stele of King Gwanggaeto and Significance of its Erection)

초록

광개토왕비는 독특한 생김새의 거대한 비석으로, 비가 서 있는 위치 역시 어느 특정 묘역에 속했다고 보기 어렵다는 특징을 보인다. 이 글은 이러한 특징들에 내포된 의미를 최근 발견된 集安高句麗碑와의 비교를 통해 보다 구체적으로 살펴본 것이다.
광개토왕비는 다듬지 않은 날 것에 가까운 거대한 비라는 점에서 長壽王이 처음부터 정형화된 일반적인 비를 생각하지 않았음을 알려준다. 하나의 비에 담기에는 지나치게 많은 1,775자의 내용을 담았다는 사실에서 그러하다.
광개토왕비가 서 있는 禹山墓區는 國內城 시기의 마지막 葬地라는 점에서 왕릉 조영에 짝한 立碑의 공사는 한 시기를 마감하는 役事였다. 비의 전면으로는 王陵群이 集安 분지에 펼쳐져 있어 그 자체로서 문란했던 국가적 祭禮에 질서를 부여한 광개토왕의 업적을 보여주고 있었다. 이러한 생생한 왕의 업적이 늘어서 있는 구역에 최종 단계에 세워졌다는 점에서 비는 국가적 제례의 완성을 기념하고 왕의 업적을 찬양하는 상징적인 구조물이었다.
정복 활동의 武勳 기사는 이어지는 수묘역 부과의 정당성을 확보하기 위한 전제였다고 보는 이해와는 달리, 무훈 기사의 절반 이상은 수묘인과 무관하다는 사실이 찾아진다. 이 점에서 무훈 기사 역시 독자의 훈적으로 판단된다. 한편 수묘인연호조는 새로운 수묘인의 役 부과와 역대 왕릉의 立碑를 언급하고 있어, 수묘제에 관한 내용이면서도 광개토왕비만의 독자적 내용에 해당한다. 이 점에서 광개토왕비의 守墓人烟戶條는 광개토왕릉의 수묘를 위해 제작된 ‘수묘비’의 범주를 넘어서고 있다. 무훈과 함께 수묘제 정비가 왕의 훈적으로 기록된 연유를 여기에서 살필 수 있는 것이다. 정복 활동의 대외 분야와 왕릉 정비의 대내적 치적을 거론하여 외정과 내치 모두에서 성과를 거두었음을 보여주려는 의도였다고 보인다.
광개토왕비가 수묘제의 淵源에 대해 언급하지 않고 곧바로 왕릉을 수호할 지역별 연호수를 나열하고 있다는 점도 주목된다. 이러한 기술방식은 광개토왕릉의 수묘인이 기존의 수묘인 편성과는 다르다는 것을 강조하기 위한 서술방식이라고 생각된다. 新來韓穢와 舊民의 조합이라는 낯선 편성이 종래의 수묘제와 어떤 관계에 있는 것인가를 분명히 해두려는 의도가 읽혀지는 것이다.

영어초록

The Stele of King Gwanggaeto is a huge one with a unique shape and its location does not seem to belong to any specific boundaries of a grave. This paper specifically delves into the meaning of those characteristics through a comparison with the recently discovered Jian Koguryo Stele(集安高句麗碑).
The Stele of King Gwanggaeto implies that King Jangsu did not think of a standard general stele from the start, considering that it is similar to a stele not properly processed. The over-lettered epitaph (1,775 letters) contained in the stele proves such a theory.
Yushan tomb area (禹山墓區), where the Stele of King Gwanggaeto stands, is the last burial site during the period of Gungnae Fortress (國內城), and the erection of the stele represented the end of an era that reflects its combination with royal tomb construction. In front of the stele, a cluster of royal tombs spread across Jian basin, and thus, the stele itself exhibits the feat of King Gwanggaeto, who kept in order of disorderly national ancestral ritual formalities. The stele was a symbolic structure commemorating the completion of national ancestral ritual formalities and praising king's achievements, given that it was set up in the final stage of the tomb area, where vivid kings' achievements were exhibited.
Unlike a view regarding that epic on conquering activity feats as a precondition to ensure legitimacy to grant the role of a tomb keeper, it is found that more than half of the poetry for feats of arms are unrelated with the royal tomb keepers. The epic on the feat of arms are judged to be a peculiar achievement. Meanwhile, SumyoInyeonHojo (守墓人烟戶條) mentions the role of a new royal tomb keeper and the erection of royal steles of many generations, and it is about a royal tomb keeping system and also about the unique content of the Stele of King Gwanggaeto. All in all, the SumyoInyeonHojo of the King Gwanggaeto Stele is beyond the category of a stele erected to keep a royal tomb. From this, the reason why reorganization of the royal tomb keeping system, as well as the feat of arms, is recorded as king's achievement can be found. The purpose of SumyoInyeonHojo appears to demonstrate achievements in both foreign affairs and internal affairs by addressing the external field of conquering activities and an internal achievement on royal tomb reorganization.
It is also noted that the Stele of King Gwanggaeto lists the number of households by region to protect royal tombs, instead of remarking royal tomb keeping system's origin. Such a description mode is considered to be a method of description to stress that the keeper of King Gwanggaeto's royal tomb is different from the formation of existing royal tomb keepers. The intention to clarify a relationship between a strange formation of combination of ShinRaeHanYe (新來韓穢) and GuMin (舊民) and the traditional royal tomb keeping system is grasped here.
