초록

This article analyzes the image of the dragon in Russian heroic epos.
The focus is on the rare image of the female dragon in the story “Dobrynia Nikitich and the Dragon,” with discussions of the image of female dragons from Asian and Korean mythology for comparison. In East Slavic heroic epos, the heroic epos that features a dragon belongs to the oldest type in all heroic epos, and to defeat the dragon is the typical undertaking of the hero. In Asia, on the other hand, in folklore and mythology, dragons are benevolent beings that maintain a positive relationship with humans. In Asian and Korean mythology the dragon often controls rain and meteorological phenomena. Because the dragon has gender as any other animals, female dragons appear in Korean mythology quite as often as male dragons. In Russian folklore, on the other hand, the rare example of a story that features a female dragon is “Dobrynia Nikitich and The Dragon.” The female dragon in “Dobrynia and The Dragon” also lives in the river, similar to a Korean dragon.
This article focuses on the male hegemony in “Dobrynia and The Dragon” while comparing the dragons in Russian and Korean epos and mythology.
