중국 대륙 2010년대 『서유기』 테마 영화 붐에 나타난 대중 문화 심리 (Popular Culture Psychology in the Boom of the 『Journey to the West』 Themed Films in Main Land China in the 2010s)

초록

중국 현대에 와서 『서유기』에 대한 영화적 각색은 대략 세 차례 정도의 흥성기를 거친다. 본 연구는 그중 세 번째 흥성기의 주요 현상으로서 특히 2010년대 초중반부터 시작된 중국 대륙에서의 ‘서유기’ 테마 영화 붐이 지닌 사회적 맥락에 초점을 맞추었다. 기본적으로 이러한 현상의 바탕이 된 사회, 정치, 문화사 및 경제, 산업 등 제 측면에 대한 분석 위에, 그 기저에 존재하며 작동하는 대중문화 심리의 흐름을 감지하려 했다. 구체적인 방법으로서 텍스트와 그 이슈화 지점, 인기도, 네티즌 반응 등을 연결 지어 분석을 진행했다. 홍콩 영화 <대화서유1.2>는 대륙에 재상영될 때 대중의 열광 속에 ‘주성치’로 대표되는 ‘무리두 현상’에 대한 담론으로 발전하며 역주행했다. 이에 힘입어 <항마편>을 시작으로 2010년대 ‘서유기’ 소재 영화들이 붐을 이루었다. 이 영역이 대륙 정부의 지지와 함께 시장을 얻기에도 용이한 노다지라고 여겨지자 이 영역에서 유명세를 얻었던 감독 및 제작자들을 대상으로 자본의 러시가 이어졌다. 이 영화들은 <대화서유>에 대한 향수와 오락적 요소를 극대화함으로써 대체로 높은 흥행성적을 얻었다. 그러나 네티즌들의 반응에 반영된 대중 심리는 이러한 상업적 성공과 다소 결이 다름을 알 수 있다. 그들은 ‘서유기’ 소재의 영화들에 대해 일정한 역할을 기대하고 있었다. 그 방향성은 시대와 소통하는 해체와 재해석, 권력 담론에 대한 탈피, 당대 사회에 대한 반영 및 공론의 장을 형성하는 계기가 되는 것이다. 즉 정치적, 상업적 배경 외에도 집단 지성이 이 소재를 작동하게 하는 측면이 있음을 알 수 있다. 이들은 ‘서유기’ 테마가 이어온 민중 문화의 정신이 살아 숨 쉬며 당대의 역사 가운데로 여정을 이어가기를 바라고 있었다.

영어초록

In modern China, the film adaptation of 『Journey to the West』 went through approximately three periods of prosperity. This study focused on the social context of the ‘Journey to the West’-themed film boom in mainland China, which began in the early and mid-2010s, as a major phenomenon of the third boom period. Basically, based on the analysis of the social, political, cultural history, economics, and industrial aspects that underlie this phenomenon, we tried to detect the psychological flow of popular culture that exists and operates at the base. As a specific method, analysis was conducted by linking the text, its issue point, popularity, and netizens’ reactions. When the Hong Kong film <A Chinese Odyssey 1, 2> was re-screened on the mainland it took a turn and hit again as it developed into a discourse on the ‘Nonsense phenomenon’ represented by ‘Stephen Chow’ amidst the public’s enthusiasm. Thanks to this, there was a boom in movies based on ‘Journey to the West’ in the 2010s, starting with <Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons>. As this area was considered a bonanza with the support of the continental government and an easy market to gain, a rush of capital ensued, centered around directors and producers who had achieved fame in this area. These films generally achieved high box office results by maximizing the nostalgia of <A Chinese Odyssey 1, 2> and entertainment elements. However, it can be seen that the public sentiment reflected in netizens’ reactions is somewhat different from this commercial success. They show that they hope that films based on ‘Journey to the West’ will play a certain role, and the direction is deconstruction and reinterpretation that communicates with the times, breaking away from power discourse, reflection on the contemporary society, and an opportunity to form a space for public debate. In other words, it can be seen that in addition to the political and commercial background, there is an aspect of collective intelligence that makes this material work. They hope that the spirit of the folk culture which is contained in the ‘Journey to the West’ could live on and continue the journey through their own time.
