북한 역사첩보영화 <붉은 단풍잎>의 역사 재현과 냉전의 재구조화 (Reconstructing the Cold War and Recreating History in the North Korean Historical Spy Film, Red Autumn Leaves)

초록

이 글은 북한 역사첩보영화 <붉은 단풍잎>(7부작, 1990~1993)이 어떤 시대적 배경 하에서 제작되었으며 어떻게 냉전의 기원을 재해석하고 이를 구조화, 내지 재구조화하고 있는지 살펴봄으로써 역사첩보영화가 북한사회에서 가지는 역할과 의미를 고찰하는 데에 그 목표가 있다. 그 분석을 통해 다음과 같은 것을 알 수 있었다. 첫째, 이 영화가 제작된 1990~1993년은 냉전해체기로서 영화는 당시의 남북관계 및 북미관계의 추이에 따라 제작 중단과 재개를 거듭하는 등 시대에 민감하게 반응하였다. 둘째, 당시 남한에서 벌어진 한국전쟁의 발발과 기원에 관한 재해석과 그 반동으로 일어난 남침설을 비판하는 것이 이 영화의 주요 제작 배경이자 동기였다. 셋째, 종래의 전쟁영화나 전쟁첩보영화들에서 한국전쟁은 어디까지나 북한과 미제의 전쟁으로 묘사되어 왔었지만, 이 영화에서는 전쟁 발발에 있어서 남한의 적극적 개입과 역할이라는 측면이 강조되고 있다. 넷째, 영화는 한국전쟁이 미국과 남한의 전쟁 모의를 통해 일어났고, 따라서 북침이라고 주장하고 싶었지만 영화의 엔딩에 확실한 결말을 보여주지 않음으로써 오히려 남침유도설을 뒷받침하는 영화처럼 읽힐 수도 있다는 것은 아이러니다. 다섯째, 이 영화에서 묘사하고 있는 남한 내 좌익의 광범위한 존재는 김일성이 전쟁 발발을 결정한 중요한 요인이었다는 점에서 절반의 진실을 내포하고 있다. 여섯째, 이 영화의 관객은 물론 북한 인민이지만 영화는 남한의 관객들을 상당히 의식하고 있다. 일곱째, 영화의 서사와 인물 구도는 냉전적인 이분법으로 시작하지만 영화가 진행되면서 전선의 재정비가 일어난다. 이는 세계사적인 냉전해체의 시대에 한반도에서는 냉전이 재구조화되고 있다는 것을 상징적으로 보여준다.

This article examines the role and significance of history spy films in North Korean society by analyzing the time period in which the North Korean historical spy film Red Autumn Leaves (Pulgŭn tanp’ungip) was made and how it reinterpreted and constructed, or reconstructed, the origins of the Cold War. Red Autumn Leaves, a seven-part film series made from 1990-1993, is one of North Korea’s major war espionage films. Depicting the intelligence war preceding the Korean War in 1950, the series focuses on the significance and recreation of the time period rather than the war’s portrayal ; hence the label of Red Autumn Leaves asa “historical spy film.” This analysis of the series provides the following insights: (1) Produced from 1990-1993 during the Cold War’send, production also stopped and restarted according to fluctuating relations with South Korea and the US; (2) the reinterpretation of the Korean War’s origins in South Korea at the time and resulting push back against the theory that North Korea began the war by invading South Korea was behind the series’production; (3) while traditional war films or war espionage films portrayed the war as a North Korean struggle against US imperialism, the series emphasized South Korea’s active intervention and role as part of the state of South-North Korea relations during production; (4) the series’ ironically undermines its intent to paint the Korean War as a plot by the US and South Korea to invade, instead supporting the reading that the US goaded North Korea into invading South Korea; (5) the series implies that there is some truth to the fact that Kim Il-sung’s belief that a massive leftist presence existed in South Korea was a decisive factor; (6) despite being meant for North Korean viewers, the film is highly cognizant of South Korean audiences as well; (7) and although the series initially frames the narrative and characters in a standard Cold War dichotomy, it depicts the frontlines changing as the series progresses, representing the reconstruction of the Cold War in the Korean peninsula while it faded it away in world history.
