초록

영화 <1987>은 ‘박종철 고문치사 사건’이 벌어진 이후, 진실을 은폐하기 위해 조직적이고 잔인하게 움직이는 독재 정권과 이를 저지하고 진실을 파헤치려는 다양한 인간군상과의 대립을 밀도 높게 그린 영화이다. 무엇보다 영화에서 구현되는 군사 정권의 처리 방식은 지배 세력의 집요한 주민 계층화 과정을 거쳐 정치‧경제적 반대자들을 억압하고 주민학살을 위한 준비 작업을 이룬다. 그리고 학살의 흔적을 은폐하거나 조작하는 등의 과정은 마치 ‘에릭 와이츠’가 정립했던 단계적 메커니즘을 방불케 한다.
또한 가해자의 입장으로만 일관했던 박처원이 실은 시대가 만들어낸 괴물임과 동시에 피해자였음이 드러나게 된다. 이는 레비가 주장했던 회색지대 안에 고립된 인물을 통해 무고한 희생과 시대의 비극을 만들어낸 악마는 다름 아닌 전체주의적 정치 체제였음을 시사한다. 그리고 이러한 독재와 야만적 폭력에 대항하는 시민들의 저항은 마치 위베르만이 강조했던 반딧불의 미광을 대변한다. 영화 속 반딧불 이미지는 소외된 공동체의 파괴와 자본주의와 파시스트 세력 하에서 대안 방식에 대한 은유로, 반딧불은 압제력에 직면한 작고 연약한 생명, 저항 및 자유의 징후를 나타낸다.
이에 본고는 영화 속 악역들의 성향과 행동의 개연성을 통해 그들을 동기화하도록 만드는 이데올로기를 살펴보고, 이로 인해 벌어지는 일련의 비인간화와 정당화로 재현되는 제노사이드의 성향을 파악한다. 그리고 더 나아가 악역이 처한 시대상과 개인의 전사를 통해 선과 악에 대한 단순한 이분법적 도덕 판단을 넘어당시 시대상과 악인에 대해 성찰하고, 이러한 독재 정권에 맞서는 시민들의 저항 이미지를 통해 영화가 전하고자 했던 주제적 함의를 고출하고자 한다.

영어초록

The film <1987> is a film that densely depicts the conflict between the dictatorship that systematically and cruelly moves to conceal the truth after the ‘Park Jong-cheol torture death incident’ and the various human groups that try to stop it and uncover the truth. Above all, the way the military regime deals with the situation as implemented in the film is through the persistent process of stratifying the population by the ruling power, suppressing political and economic opponents, and preparing for the massacre of the residents. And the process of concealing or manipulating traces of the massacre is reminiscent of the step-by-step mechanism established by ‘Eric Weitz.’ In addition, it is revealed that Park Cheo-won, who had consistently taken the position of the perpetrator, was in fact a monster created by the times and a victim at the same time. This suggests that the devil that created innocent victims and the tragedy of the times through the isolated figures in the gray zone that Levy argued was none other than the totalitarian political system. And the resistance of the citizens against this dictatorship and barbaric violence represents the faint light of the firefly that Hubert Hubert emphasized. The image of fireflies in the film is a metaphor for the destruction of marginalized communities and alternative methods under capitalism and fascist powers. Fireflies represent small and fragile lives, signs of resistance and freedom in the face of oppression.
In this paper, we examine the ideology that motivates the villains in the film through the probabilities of their tendencies and actions, and identify the tendency of genocide that is reproduced as a series of dehumanizations and justifications that occur as a result. Furthermore, we seek to reflect on the times and villains of the time through the villains’ era and their personal struggles, beyond the simple dichotomous moral judgment of good and evil, and to elucidate the thematic implications that the film intended to convey through the images of citizens’ resistance against this dictatorship.
