치안의 유토피아와 정치의 (불)가능성 －김남천의 「물」을 중심으로－ (The Utopia of Police and The (Im)possibility of Politics －On Kim Nam-cheon’s “Water”－)

초록

이 논문의 목적은 ‘정치적인 것’의 관점에서 「물」에 대한 이해를 시도하는 데 있다. 이는 감옥의 이율배반적 구성과 물에 대한 욕구에 사로잡힌 수감자들의 행동을 통해서 작동하는 규율권력의 통치에 대한 분석, 그리고 반어적 서사 구성을 통해서 드러나는 작품의 의미 잠재력(정치의 (불)가능성)에 대한 해석을 포함한다.
「물」은 물과 자유의 이율배반으로써 구조화된 공간과 물에 대한 생물학적 욕구에 사로잡힌 수감자들의 행동을 통해서 규율권력의 통치, 또는 규율권력의 경제학을 문제화한 작품이다. 수감자들에게 감옥 내 질서는 ‘공평한’ 물 분배를 가능하게 해주는 것이었고, 그 공간 구성은 물에 대한 권리를 실현하게 해주는 것이었으며, 규율권력은 이와 같은 공간 구성을 최종적으로 결정하는 힘이었다. 하지만 설사의 계기를 중심으로 구성된 반어적 서사는 감옥 내 질서의 ‘공평함’과 그 공간 구성의 정당성, 그리고 규율권력의 권위를 침식함으로써 규율권력의 통치를 문제화했고, 이를 통해서 정치의 성격에 관한 사유를 가능하게 해주었다. 그 결과 정치는 자유에 대한 의지에 따라 행동할 때만 보증되는 과정임이 드러난다. 정치는 물과 자유 중 하나를 선택하는 행동이 아니라, 물과 자유를 모두 충족할 수 없도록 규정하는 감옥의 이율배반적 구성과 그 규율권력을 겨냥함으로써만 가능한 과정인 것이다.
「물」의 교훈은 ‘생물학적 삶에 대한 충실성이란 자유에 방해가 될 뿐만 아니라 노예성의 표시이기도 하다’는 데 있다. 하지만 언제나 이미 자유의 선택 불가능성에 의해서 규정되는 사회에서 자유에 대한 의지를 실현하는 것은 불가능한 일일 수밖에 없다. 이것은 명백한 정치의 불가능성이다. 그럼에도 불구하고 「물」은 바로 그 정치의 불가능성을 재현하면서도 다른 한편으로는 반어적 서사를 구성함으로써 정치의 가능성을 성찰하게 해주었다. 바로 여기에 「물」의 ‘정치적’ 의의가 있다.

영어초록

The aim of this paper is to understand the fiction “Water” on the perspective of ‘the political(le politique)’. It consists of the analysis of the police of the regulative power operating on the antinomic constitution of prison and the behavior of prisoners captured by the disire of water, and the interpretation of meaning-potentials((Im)possibility of politics) disclosed by the composition of ironic narrative.
“Water” is the work which exposed the police of regulative power or the economics of regulative power through representing the space(prison) constituted by antinomy of water and freedom and the behavior of prisoners captured by the biological desire of water. For them, the order within prison is to make the ‘fair’ distribution of water possible, the structure of the space(prison) is to make the rights of water real, and the regulative power is the power finally determine the constitution. But the ironic narrative composed by the moment of diarrhea problemized the police of regulative power by eroding the ‘fairness’ of the order within prison, the legitimacy of the constitution of the space, and the authority of regulative power. With this, it was possible to consider on the nature of politics. And then it was disclosed that the politics was guaranteed only by the practice in accordance with the will to freedom. Shortly, the politics is not the behavior for selecting one of the water and the freedom, but the process possible only by targeting at the antinomic constitution of prison and the regulative power excluding the possibility of simultaneous satisfiability of both.
The lesson of the fiction “Water” is that ‘the loyalty to the biological life is not only the obstacle of freedom, but also the mark of slaveness’. But in the society always already determined by the impossibility of the choice of freedom, it is inevitably impossible to satisfy the will to freedom. This is obviously the impossibility of politics. Nevertheless, the fiction “Water” make the consideration of the possibility of politics possible by composing the ironic narrative while representing the impossibility of politics.
