초록

백련사는 전남 강진 바닷가 절경에 자리 잡고 있는 명찰이다. 고려 1216 년 원묘국사 요세(了世)에의하여 유명한 백련결사 사찰로 창건되어 한국불교사에 커다란 업적을 남긴 명찰로 유명하다. 이 백련사의 대웅전에는 백련사를 상징하는 석가삼세불상이 봉안되어 있다. 이 백련사 삼세불상은 질로보나 크기로 보나 조선 후반기를 대표할만한 중요한 목불좌상들이다.
첫째, 백련사 삼세불상은 백련사 대웅보전이 중창된 1762 년 전후에 조성되었던 것으로 판단되므로 1 세기 후반기 불상으로 간주할 수 있다. 조성연대를 거의 알 수 있는 18 세기 후반기 불상은 거의알려지지 않고 있어서 1762 년경 작인 이 삼세불상은 이 당시 불상 연구에 가장 중요시되는 작품이라할 수 있다. 이른바 17 세기 말 18 세기 초(후반기 제 1 기) 양식에서 19 세기 양식으로 이행되는 과정의 중간단계에 해당하는 18 세기 후반기 양식 불상 연구에 가장 중요한 자료가 된다는 것이다.
둘째 백련사 삼세불상은 17 세기말부터 18 세기 전반기에 이르는 색난, 하천계 불상 양식을 계승하고 있기 때문에 18 세기 후반기 불상 유파 연구에 필수적인 불상으로 높이 평가된다.
셋째 이 백련사 삼세불상은 당대에는 잘 볼 수 없는 우람하고 중후한 특징을 보여주고 있는데 이런점에서 이 시대 불상 가운데에는 따라갈 수 없는 우수한 걸작으로 평가되고 있다.
넷째 만약 없어진 복장품이 발견된다면 18 세기를 대표하는 걸작으로 국가지정문화재적 가치가 있을 것이다.
다섯째 현재 직접적인 조성기가 없지만 대웅전 중창 당시인 1762 년경 조성이 확실하므로 잠정적으로 지방 유형문화재, 일정기간이 지나면 국가문화재로 지정하여 1762 년이라는 조성연대를 알 수있는 희귀한 18 세기 불상으로 길이 보전해야 할 것으로 판단된다.

영어초록

Baekryunsa is a famous temple located in the spectacular Gangjin beach in Jeonnam.
It was founded in Goryeo in 1216 as a famous Baekryun society temple by National MonkWonmyo Yose (了世) and is famous for a temple which left great achievements in Korean Buddhisthistory. Daeungjeon of Baekryunsa is enclosed with Samse Buddha Statue, which symbolizesBaekryunsa. This Baekryunsa Samse Buddha Statue is a vital seated wooden Buddha statuerepresenting the second half of the Joseon Dynasty in terms of size and quality.
First, Baekryunsa Samse Buddha Statue can be regarded as the Buddha Statue built in the secondhalf of the 1st century as Baekryunsa Daeungbojeon was determined to have been built around1762. Buddha statues with absolute age in the late 18th century are almost unknown, and thisSamse Buddha Statue sculpted in 1762, is the most important work for the study of Buddha Statueat that time. This is the most important data for the Buddha Statue study of the style of the latterhalf of the 18th century, which corresponds to the middle stage of the process of transition fromthe style of the late 17th century and the early 18th century to the style of the 19th century.
Second, the Baekryunsa Samse Buddha Statue is highly appreciated as a Buddha Statue, which isessential for the Buddha Statue sect study in the latter half of the 18th century, as it inherits theSaeknan, Hacheongye Buddha Statue form from the end of the 17th century to the first half of the18th century.
Third, this Baekryunsa Samse Buddha Statue is regarded as an excellent masterpiece that cannotbe followed in the Buddha Statue of this era in that it shows the unmatched and profoundcharacteristics of the time.
Fourth, if the missing Contained Articles are found, it will be a nationally designated culturalproperty value as a masterpiece representing the 18th century.
Fifth, it is certain that it was built around 1762, when Daeungjeon was built, although it does nothave a direct record with absolute age. It is presumed that it should be preserved as a rare 18thcentury Buddha Statue which can be temporarily classified as a local tangible cultural asset, and anational cultural asset after a certain period of time.
