초록

이 논문은 17, 18세기 인조.정조기의 <삼신삼세불괘불도>를 중심으로형식 분류와 양식특징에 대해서 고찰한 글이다. 이 시대는 전란 이후 사회적 변혁과 안정기를 거치며 소실된 불교사원을 복원하고, 활발한 불화조성으로 구도.형태.색채.문양 등에 있어 불화양식이 확립되는 시기로, 조선시대 불화 양식은 물론 불교회화사 연구에 중요한 위치를 차지하고 있다고 하겠다.
조선시대 17세기 이후 三身.三世佛의 융합에 따라 괘불화의 경우 비로자나불.노사나불.석가불이 한 조를 이루는 ‘비로자나삼신불’과 석가불.약사불.아미타불로 구성되는 ‘석가모니삼세불’이 혼합된 ‘삼신삼세불괘불도’는 조선시대의 새로운 도상으로서, 오불.사불.삼불 세 가지 형식으로 구분된다. 불상조각은 속리산 법주사 대웅전 상을 제외하고는 대부분 3불 형식(비로자나.약사불.아미타불)이 전형을 이루고 있음이 파악된다. 이러한도상은 17세기 오불회괘불도의 영향을 받아 18세기 삼신삼세불괘불도에서정점을 이룬다.
둘째, 17세기 괘불도는 매우 다양한 구도를 보여주는데, ‘ㅗ’형 그리고 ‘역삼각형(▽)’, ‘횡방형(.)’, ‘사다리꼴’ 등의 배치법과 한 화면에 2단 또는 3단의 群圖形式의 구도법이 보인다. 이후 화면을 꽉 채운 二段 構圖는 그대로傳承되어 18세기의 흐름을 엿볼 수 있다.
셋째, 17세기 괘불도에 나타나는 형태는 16세기 불화의 양식적 특징에서유사함을 많이 나타내고 있으며, 특히 국립중앙박물관 소장 <四佛會圖>와친연성을 나타내고 있다. 이어서 나타나는 1650년 作 갑사 괘불도의 塊體化경향 등의 흐름은 1684년 作 부석사 괘불도로 이어져 17세기 전반기의 소조비로자나불상과 동일한 양식적인 특징이 나타난다. 18세기 괘불도에서는 앞시대에 비해 권속수가 많아지며 다소 경직되고 정형화된 모습이지만 대형작품에서 보여주는 화면 구성과 세련된 형태미 등에서 당대의 수작으로 평가된다.
넷째, 이 시기 괘불도의 색채적 특징은 비록 채색은 낡았지만 맑고 은은하여 17세기 불화의 고상한 분위기를 잘 보여 주고 있다. 적색과 녹색 계열을주조색으로 하고, 佛身의 金彩, 金泥와 변용한 황색 筆線, 광배의 화려한 연당초 문양, 중간 계열의 색사용 등은 명종대 왕실발원 불화의 섬세함과 화려당초 문양, 중간 계열의 색사용 등은 명종대 왕실발원 불화의 섬세함과 화려함이 여전히 남아 있다. 18세기부터는 점차 탁해지고 장식적인 면과 진채적성향이 나타나는 시기이지만 새로운 화풍을 계승하여 세대양식의 변화를 실감할 수 있게 한다. 이와 함께 전란 이후 피폐와 곤궁 속에서도 조선의 여러신앙과 교리가 의식을 통해 만들어진 그림과 불상 조각이므로 그 가치를 느끼게 하기에 충분하다.

영어초록

In this paper, we studied type classification and form features around <Three World Buddhas Banner Paintings> during the reign of Injo⋅ Jeongjo in 17th, 18th century. The times are when Buddhist temples destroyed by fire through social change and stabilization period after war were restored and Buddhist painting style was established in composition⋅ form⋅color⋅pattern etc. by actively creating Buddhist paintings and can be said to hold an important position in research for the style of Buddhist paintings of the Joseon Dynasty as well as history of Buddhist paintings.
According to the fusion of Trikaya⋅Three World Buddhas after 17th century of the Joseon Dynasty, in case of Buddhist Banner Paintings, ‘Three World Buddhas Banner Paintings’ in which ‘Seokgamoni Three World Buddhas’ consisting of Seokgamonibul⋅Yaksabul⋅Amitabul and ‘Biroojana Trikaya buddha’ composed of a group of Biroojanabul⋅ Nosanabul⋅Seokgamonibul are mixed is a new painting of the Joseon Dynasty and divided into three types of five Buddhas⋅four Buddhas⋅ three Buddhas. Except the sculpture in the main hall of Sokrisan Beopjusa, most Buddha sculptures are found to be formed with Three Buddhas type (Biroojana⋅Yaksabul⋅Amitabul). This painting was influenced by Hanging Painting of Five Monks Assembly in the 17th century and peaked in Three World Buddhas Banner Paintings in 18th century.
Second, Buddhist Banner Paintings in the 17th century show various compositions such as placement method of ‘ㅗ’ type and ‘inverted triangle (▽)’ , ‘lateral square(▭)’, ‘trapezoid’ etc. and group image form of 2-stage or 3-stage in one screen. And then 2-stage composition filling the screen has been handed down and shows us the flow of the 18th century.
Third, the form shown in Buddhist Banner Paintings in the 17th century is quite similar to stylistic characteristics of Buddhist Paintings in the 16th century and in particular, it shows affinity with <Four Buddhas Gathering Painting> owned by National Museum of Korea. And then the flow of big chunk tendency etc. of Gapsa Buddhist Banner Painting created in 1650 led to Buseoksa Buddhist Banner Painting created in 1684, showing stylistic characteristics which are the same as modeling, Biroojana Buddhist Sculpture in the first half of the 17th century. The 18th century Buddhist Banner Painting has more dependents compared to the previous period and is somewhat rigid and formal but evaluated as the masterpiece of the times in terms of screen configuration and sophisticated physical beauty etc. shown in large works.
Fourth, though old, the colors of Buddhist Banner Paintings of the times are clear and delicate, showing the elegant atmosphere of 17th-century Buddhist paintings well. The main colors are red and green and delicacy and gorgeousness of King Myeongjong royal family praying Buddhist Paintings still remain in gold painted Buddha body, gold dust and transformed yellow line, colorful lotus rinceau pattern of halo, use of middle colors etc. The 18th century is the time when they became increasingly turbid and decorative aspect and deep-colored tendency appeared but the new style of painting was inherited allowing us to realize changes in the generation form. In addition, it turned out to be enough to feel their value because these are painting and Buddha sculptures made by several beliefs and doctrines of Joseon through rituals even in exhaustion and impoverishment after war.
