조선시대 삼신삼세불 도상연구 (The Study on the Icon of Trikaya and Three World Buddhas in Chosun)

초록

임진왜란 이후 불교미술은 불교중흥에 힘입어 활발한 조형활동이 이루어 졌다. 그 중에서도 불화와 불상조각은 예배 대상의 가장 주된 조형으로서 각 사찰마다 앞 다투어 봉안하게 됨에 따라 많은 양이 전해져오고 있으며, 각 주제별에 따른 심도 있는 연구가 진행되어 왔다.
‘삼신삼세불’도상 역시 조선시대 불교미술의 여러 주제들 가운데 하나로서, ‘비로자나삼신불’사상과 ‘석가모니삼세불’사상이 복합적으로 나타난 임진란 이후의 새로운 도상이다. 지금까지 ‘삼신불’과 ‘삼세불’도상에 대한 각각의 개별적인 연구는 있어왔지만 ‘삼신삼세불’도상에 대한 본격적인 연구는 미진한 실정으로서, 불교회화와 불상조각을 통해서 나타나는 ‘삼신삼세불’도상을 살펴봄으로써 도상의 형식 및 특징을 파악하는데 연구목적을 두었다.
본격적인 연구에 앞서 먼저 ‘삼신불’과 ‘삼세불’에 대한 불신관의 성립과 불화와 불상조각으로 표현된 도상의 전개에 대하여 정리해본 뒤, ‘삼신삼세불’도상의 출현과 그 실례를 통해 도상의 형식과 특징을 살펴보았다.
법화종이나 화엄종 등 모든 종파에서 채용하고 있으며 마침내 화엄의 불신관으로 자리 잡은 ‘삼신불’도상은 삼신불 모두를 한꺼번에 나타낸 전형적인 형식과, 삼신불 중 보신 노사나불과 화신 석가불만을 독립적으로 표현한 형식 등 크게 두 가지로 구분해 볼 수 있다.
과거․현재․미래 삼 세계에도 깨우침에 이른 많은 불이 존재한다고 하는 이른바 시간적(수직적) 개념의 다불사상인 ‘三世諸佛思想’과 석가모니불을 중심으로 현재에도 무수히 많은 타방불이 존재한다는 공간적(수평적) 개념의 現在他方佛思想이 출현하는 ‘삼세불’도상은 초기 대승불교시대 이후 동방묘희국 아촉불설(또는 유리광정토 약사불설)과 서방극락정토 아미타불설 등에 의하여 본격적으로 전개되기에 이른다. 삼세불 도상 중 시간적 개념의 삼세불은 돌아간 자의 내세에서의 영생기원 또는 새로운 미래제시 형태의 단순한 신앙이며 현재 세계의 석가불을 중심으로 왼쪽의 미래 세계에는 미래불인 미륵불이, 그리고 과거 세계인 오른쪽에는 과거불인 연등불이 배치된다. 그러나 공간적 개념의 삼세불은 현세에서의 치병과 내세의 극락왕생을 제시하는 복잡한 신앙 형태로 현재 석가불을 본존으로 하여 좌 보처불로는 동방세계의 약사불이 배치되고, 우 보처불로는 서방세계의 아미타불을 안치하여 두 개념의 삼세불 간에 차이가 있음이 파악된다.
조선시대 17세기 이후 불화와 불상조각을 통해 등장하는 ‘삼세불’도상은 석가불을 중심으로 왼쪽에는 약사불을, 오른쪽에는 아미타불을 배치하여 한 조를 이루는 수평적 개념의 삼세불이다. 불화의 경우 일폭식 그림과 삼폭식으로 나누어지는 반면 불상조각은 석가불, 약사불, 아미타불 삼불만 봉안하는 전형적인 삼불 형식과, 이 삼불상에 4위의 협시보살상을 등장시키는 칠존불 형식 두 가지로 나누어 볼 수 있다.
한편 화엄사상에 의한 비로자나불․노사나불․석가불이 한 조를 이루는 ‘삼신불’과 법화사상을 바탕으로 한 석가불․약사불․아미타불로 구성되는 ‘삼세불’이 혼합된 도상인 ‘삼신삼세불’도상은 비로자나불․노사나불․석가불․약사불․아미타불 등 5불로서 표현되는 것을 전형으로 하여 비로자나불․노사나불․석가불․석가불의 사불 형식과 비로자나불․약사불․아미타불로 이루어진 삼불 형식 등 세 가지로 구분된다. 그림의 경우는 오불․사불․삼불 형식이 모두 엿보이는 반면 불상조각은 비로자나불․약사불․석가불이 한 조를 이루는 속리산 법주사 대웅전 상을 제외한 대부분은 비로자나불․약사불․아미타불 구성의 3불 형식이 가장 전형을 이루며, 이는 종파에 관계없이 법화․화엄 두 사상의 통합된 모습의 通佛敎思想에 따라 등장하는 조선시대 후반 이후 도상의 한 특징이다. 이는 진리란 하나이면서 셋이 되고, 셋이면서 하나가 되는 ‘三身卽一佛 一佛卽三身’을 나타내는 대승불교사상과 깊은 관련성을 가지고 있음은 물론, 본래 불교의 의미를 잘 표현하고 있다고 하겠다.

영어초록

After the Japanese invasion of Korea in 1592, there were active modeling activities in Buddhist Art thanks to the revival of Buddhism. Among them, Buddhist paintings and Buddha Statue sculptures were the most common models. As most of the temples wanted to enshrine paintings and statues, many of the art works have been handed down to us. Moreover, in‐depth studies according to theme have been performed.
The icon of ‘Trikaya and Three World Buddhas(三身三世佛)’ is one of the themes of Buddhist art. It is a new icon showing the ideology of both ‘Vairocana Trikaya’ and ‘Sakamuni Three World Buddhas’ emerging after the Japanese invasion in 1592. Although there have been studies on the icons of ‘Trikaya(三身佛)’ and ‘Three World Buddhas(三世佛)’ separately, there have been insufficient studies on the icon of ‘Trikaya and Three World Buddhas’ in full scale. The purpose of this study was to identify the forms and characteristics of the icons by reviewing the icon of ‘Trikaya and Three World Buddhas’ shown in Buddhist paintings and statues
Before the full scale study, the creation of ‘Buddha's Body(佛身觀)’ on the Trikaya and and Three World Buddhas the development of icons shown in the Buddhist paintings and statues were reviewed and the forms and characteristics of the icons were reviewed through the emergence of the icon of ‘Trikaya and Three World Buddhas’ and its examples.
The icon of ‘Trikaya’ which is adopted by most of the cults such as Beop-hwa Sect(法華宗) and Hwa-wen Sect(華嚴宗) and is accepted as the Bulsingwan of Avatamsaka(華嚴), can be classified into two types: traditional type showing all of Trikaya together; and modified type showing Sambhoga Locana(報身 盧舍那佛) and Nirmana Sakya(化身 釋迦佛) separately.
The icon of ‘Three World Buddhas’ was developed in full scale by Achokbuddha-East (東方妙喜國 阿閦佛說)〔or Bhaisajvaguru(藥師佛說)〕and Amitabha-West(西方極樂淨土 阿彌陀佛說) after early Mahayan Buddhism, where The Other World's Buddhas ideology-Present(現在他方佛思想) is shown. In The Other World's Buddhas ideology-Present, there are Three World Buddhas ideology, which is Many Buddhas ideology believing that there are many Buddhas in a chronological concept (vertical) that there are many Buddhas who got Buddhadhatu in the three worlds such as past, present and future and in a spatial (horizontal) concept that there are a great number of the other world's Buddhas around Sakamuni at present. In the icon of three world Buddhas, there is Sakamuni in the middle. On the left of Sakamuni is Maitreya showing the future world and on the right is Dipankara representing the past. However, Three World Buddhas in the spatial concept is a complicated belief showing the curing at present and easy passage to eternity. It is found that there is difference in three world Buddhas between the two concepts as they place Bhaisajyaguru on the left of Sakamuni and Amitabha of the Western world on the right of Sakamuni, which shows difference in the interpretation of three world Buddhas.
The icon of ‘Three World Buddhas’ shown in Buddhist paintings and sculptures after the 17th century is a horizontal three world Buddhas that places Bhaisajyaguru on the left of Sakamuni and Amitabha on the right and place Sakamuni in the middle between them. While Buddhist paintings can be divided into two types, which are one breath and three breath paintings, sculptures can also be divided into two types, which are traditional symbol type that enshrines the three world Buddhas such as Sakamuni, Bhaisajyaguru and Amitabha and Seven Buddhas type that has the Bohisattvas in the 4th position in addition to the three Buddhas.
On the other hand, the icon can be divided into three types: Trikaya where Vairocana, Locana and Sakamuni compose one group; Three World Buddhas composed of Sakamuni, Bhaisajyaguru and Amitabha based on Saddharmapundarika Ideology; and Trikaya and Three World Buddhas that is the icon where Three World Buddhas are mixed. Trikaya and Three World Buddhas is represented typically by the Five Buddhas such as Varocana, Locana, Sakamuni, Bhaisajyaguru and Amitabha, the Four Buddhas such as Varocana, Locana, Sakamuni, and Sakamuni, or the Three Buddhas such as Varocana, Bhaisajyaguru and Amitabha. In the picture, all the styles including Five Buddhas, Four Buddhas and Three Buddhas can be seen. However, in Buddhist statues, most of them show three Buddhas such as Varocana, Bhaisajyaguru and Amitabha. excluding the statues in Center Hall of the Beopju‐sa Temple in Mt. Sokri. It is a characteristic of late Chosun when United Buddhism integrating Saddharmapundarika(法華) and Avatamsaka(華嚴) emerged. It is closely related with Mahayana Buddism that shows ‘Trikaya and Three Bodies is just One Buddha One Buddha is just Three Bodies (三身卽一佛 一佛卽三身) claiming that the truth is one and three at the same time and the three will become one, and expresses the meaning of Buddhism clearly.
