불완전의 영성을 향한 제언 (A Modest Proposal for a Spirituality of Imperfection)

초록

영성에 대한 학문적 논의와 대중적 관심이 폭넓게 형성되어가는 오늘날에도 영성을 초월 경험을 통한 인격의 온전한 통합, 욕망에 대한 완전한 제어, 혹은 신비적 깨달음과 동일시하는 경향이 있다. 이러한 경향은 기독교 영성의 역사에서 영성의 실제를 지시하는 하나의 용어로서 사용되어온 완덕에 대한 오해와 관련된다.
이 논문은 기독교 영성의 위와 같은 이론적, 실제적 왜곡에 대한 한 응답으로서 ‘불완전의 영성’을 제안한다. 불완전의 영성은 완덕에 이르는 일이 불가능하다는 인식론적 전제 아래 자기의 불완전을 인정하고, 인간적 욕망을 점증적으로 인식하면서, ‘신비적 방랑자’의 삶을 살아가는 과정이다.
이와 같은 논지의 전개를 위하여 먼저 「모세의 생애」에 나타난 닛사의 그레고리의 완덕에 대한 이해를 고찰한다. 그레고리에 따르면 완덕에 이르는 것은 불가능한 현실이다. 이 불가능성은 완덕의 무한계성과 관련되는데 이는 하나님의 무한성으로부터 기인한다. 그에게 완덕은 하나님을 향한 사랑 때문에 점점 ‘어둠’ 속으로 빠져 들어가는, ‘영원한 진보’의 과정이다. 이는 ‘하나님의 얼굴’을 보는 것이 아니라 ‘하나님의 뒤’를 따라가는 과정이다. 다음 장에서는 현대 영성학자인 필립 쉘드레이크의 영성 이해를 검토한다. 쉘드레이크에 따르면 완덕이라는 상태의 설정 자체가 문제이다. 왜냐하면 영성은 불완전, 그리고 이에 따른 끊임없는 회심의 필요성에 대한 인식과 수용을 바탕으로 하는, 하나님을 향한 지속적인 운동이기 때문이다. “욕망의 영성”을 주장하는 그는 욕망을 하나님의 실재가 현존하는 장소요 인간의 “본질적 자기”가 머무는 장소로 이해한다. 진실한 인간적 욕망과 하나님을 향한 욕망은 둘이 아니라 하나이다. 이 사랑의 욕망에 사로잡힌 신비적 방랑자는 경계를 넘나드는, 한계선상의 삶을 살아간다.
마지막으로 결론에서는 불완전의 영성의 영성학적 함의를 영성의 정의와 기도의 맥락에서 약술한다.

영어초록

Despite the today’s development of academic research and the growing interest of the public in the field of spirituality, a tendency can still be found, in which the term spirituality is largely identified with such phenomena as the perfect integration of the personality through the process of transcendental experiences, the complete control of human desires and passions, or simply the mystical awakening. This tendency is related, I suppose, to the insufficient understanding of the concept of ‘perfection,’ one of the concepts that indicates the praxis of spirituality.
This essay aims at making a modest proposal for a spirituality of imperfection as an effective response to the aforementioned, distorted view of spirituality. It is the spirituality, in which with the epistemological presupposition of the impossibility of achieving perfection, one is enabled to recognize and accept his/her imperfections and failures, grows in the awareness of the dynamics of his/her authentic desires, and lives the life of ‘the mystic wanderer.’ What is to be done in the main body of this essay for this proposal is in the first place to investigate Gregory of Nyssa’s understanding of perfection as shown in his later treatise on the spiritual life, The Life of Moses. In Gregory’s view, achieving the perfection in virtue is an impossible reality. Related to the unlimited nature of perfection, this impossibility derives fundamentally from the infinity of God. For him, thus, Christian perfection is the process, called “eternal progress,” whereby one continues to walk into the ‘darkness’ of the divine reality and so due to the ardent desire of God. It is not so much, as he puts it, seeing God in the face as following the back of God. In the following chapter we will explore Philip Sheldrake’s understanding of spirituality, in which the notion of perfection itself is problamatized. According to Sheldrake, spirituality has much to do with the continuous recognition and acceptance of one’s imperfections and of the necessity of ongoing conversion and also the perpetual movement toward God. In what he calls the “spirituality of desire,” desire is the locus where the reality of God is present and the “essential self” resides. Human desires and the desire for God are not the two different realities but one in their deepest level. The mystic wanderer, who is obsessed with desire, lives the life of crossing the boundaries.
In the conclusion, the spiritual theological implications of the spirituality of imperfection are briefly provided in the context both of the definition of spirituality and of the practice of prayer.
