초록

근대 불교지성의 연구 활동과 근대 불교학의 정립을 살피는 일은 곧 한국불교의 근대정신 및 근대성을 이해하는 작업으로서도 일정한 의미를 갖는다. 근대 불교학은 19세기 말 20세기 초의 한국불교가 처한 대전환기적 시대상황과 함께 불교지성의 다양한 동향 속에서 싹트고 성장해 왔다. 즉 근대사회로의 급격한 변화와 일본의 식민정책 하에서 교육 · 문화 · 불교개혁 · 외국유학 활동 등 불교지성들의 근대적 지적 동향을 바탕으로 근대 불교학이 싹트고 성장해 온 것이다. 근대 불교학을 이끌어 온 주역들은 물론 그런 시대상황과 동향 속에서 형성된 일단의 불교학자들이었다.
근대 불교학자군에 포함시킬 수 있는 인원은 대략 20명 내외로 헤아려지며, 학문적 배경 및 연구 성향에 따라 이들은 다시 몇 그룹으로 구분할 수 있다. 전통교학자, 실천적 교학자, 유학 출신 신진학자의 그룹이 그것이며, 한국불교학 연구에 기여한 일본인 학자들도 한 그룹을 이룬다. 이들 근대불교학자들은 몇몇을 제외하고는 거의 대부분이 在俗者로서 생활했던 승려신분으로, 이런 현상은 당시 한국불교의 한 특징적인 時流를 반영한다. 어쨌든 종교적 과제를 안고 있는 승려이자 학문적 과제를 추구해야할 불교학자로서 이들의 신분적 자각은 불교학 연구 활동의 기본적 배경이 되었다. 또한 일본의 불교문화 및 근대화된 불교학의 영향 그리고 불교 지성계 전반의 근대에 대한 시대인식 속에서 표출되고 있는 활발한 불교개혁론의 제기, 신학교기관을 통한 청년교육 활동, 근대적 지적활동으로서의 다양한 불교잡지의 간행과 논문 발표 등은 불교학 연구의 또 다른 배경을 구성한다.
근대 불교학자들이 이룩한 연구업적은 양적인 면에서 의외로 방대하며 연구주제와 내용 또한 다양하고 풍부한 편이다. 근대 불교학의 정립은 곧 이같은 학문적 업적과 성과를 말함이다. 따라서 그것을 ①불교학 기본자료 ②한국불교 · 한국불교사 ③교학 및 불교사상 ④석가모니 · 인도불교 ⑤불교신앙 및 포교 ⑥종교사 · 종교학 ⑦불교사회 · 문화 · 기타의 주요 연구분야로 묶어 검토할 때, 우리는 근대불교학의 대략적인 윤곽을 그려볼 수 있다. 이 가운데서도 특히 주목할 만한 분야는 ②와 ③이다. 근대 불교학 연구의 출발 계기와 주요 과제가 우선 한국불교의 정체성 확립에 있었다 할 때 한국불교 및 한국 불교사 분야에 연구의 관심과 노력이 집중되고 있음은 당연한 현상이다. ②의 분야가 주로 전통교학자들에 의해 큰 성과가 나왔다면, ③의 교학 및 불교사상 분야에서는 신진학자들의 연구 개척 노력이 돋보인다.
근대불교학은 물론 그 자체로서 완성태는 아니다. 근대정신 및 근대성에 합당한 연구 업적과 성과를 충분하게 이루었다고 말하기는 어렵기 때문이다. 그러나 이상과 같은 연구들을 통해 근대 불교학이 정립함으로써 이를 기반으로 이후 한국불교가 불교학 연구에 더욱 새로운 지평을 열어갈 수 있게 되었음은 분명한 일이다.

영어초록

Observing carefully the research activities of Korean Buddhist intellectuals and the establishment of Korean Buddhist studies in modern ages has some meaning as the work to be able to understand both the modern spirit and the modernity of the Korean Buddhism. Modern Korean Buddhist studies has been sprouted up and grown up by various research activities of Buddhist intellectuals with the trend of the times and the great turning point of Korean Buddhism between the end of the nineteenth century and the early of the twentieth century. In other words, under the Japanese colonial policy and rapid change into modern society, modern Korean Buddhist studies has been built up and grown up by the Buddhist intellectuals based on their modern intellectual trend such as education, culture, Buddhist reformation and the activities during their studying abroad. In brief, the leading Buddhist intellectuals of modern Korean Buddhist studies were such Buddhist scholars as were built up in the trend and circumstances of the times.
Those who belong to the modern Buddhist scholars are roughly estimated some 20 and they are able to be divided into a few groups by their scientific backing or their research disposition. Traditional Buddhist scholars, practical Buddhist scholars, new Buddhist scholars who studied abroad, and Japanese Buddhist scholars who contributed to the Korean Buddhist studies form those groups. Those modern Buddhist scholars were mostly married Buddhist monks except some, which reflected the Japanese Buddhist tradition and such tradition was the characteristic current in the Korean Buddhism of the times. Anyway, though they were the Buddhist scholars who had religious problem as the priest and obliged to investigate academic task, the awareness of their social status became the basic background on the research activities concerning Buddhist studies. In addition, the Japanese Buddhist culture, the influence of Japanese modernized Buddhist studies, and the awareness of the Korean Buddhist intellectuals of the times formed the other background on the research of Buddhist studies.
The research achievements of modern Buddhist scholars are not only unexpectedly massive in terms of quantity, but the subjects and contents of studies are also various and plentiful. For the reasons stated above, the formation of modern Buddhist studies stands for the research achievements and the results on Buddhist studies. Accordingly, we would be able to grasp the general outline of modern Korean Buddhist studies as follows: ①Basic materials for Buddhist studies ②Korean Buddhism and the history of Korean Buddhism ③Buddhist studies and Buddhist thought ④Sakyamuni and Indian Buddhism ⑤Buddhist faith and missionary work ⑥The history of religion and the science of religion ⑦Buddhist society, Buddhist culture, and other subjects. Among the above ② and ③ are especially remarkable fields of study. As the start opportunity and main problem for modern Buddhist studies were chiefly the establishment of the identity for the Korean Buddhism, it was natural phenomenon that modern Korean intellectuals exerted all possible efforts on both fields of Korean Buddhism and the history of Korean Buddhism. While traditional scholars produced good results on both fields of ②Korean Buddhism and the history of Korean Buddhism, on the other hand new intellectuals had excellent results on both ③Buddhist studies and Buddhist thought.
It is true that modern Korean Buddhist studies might not be a complete state in itself, for it did not accomplish perfectly the research achievements and results in terms of modern spirit and modernity. And yet, as modern Korean Buddhist studies could be settled through the above all possible efforts on various research activities by modern Korean intellectuals, it is obvious that on the basis of the above research activities the Korean Buddhism has been able to open a new skyline on the Korean Buddhist studies and research activities.
