그로테스크와 카타르시스의 정신분석학적 상관성 연구: 미셸 레리스의 자서전을 중심으로 (The Psychoanalytic Correlation between Grotesque and Catharsis: Focusing on Michel Leiris’ Autobiography)

초록

낭만주의 이래의 예술, 특히 포스트모던 예술은 숭고함 이상으로 그로테스크의 미학을 통해 카타르시스를 추구한다. 빅토르 위고는 낭만주의 선언문으로 일컬어지는 『크롬웰』 서문을 통해 모순적인 것들이 공존하는 세상에서 예술은 이상적인 아름다움만을 추구하기보다 선과 악, 고상함과 비속함 같은 상호모순이 하나로 승화된 역동적인 그로테스크를 추구해야 할 것이며, 새 시대의 미학은 곧 그로테스크라고 선언한 바 있다. 이후 그로테스크는 현대 미학의 근간을 이루는 논리가 되었다. 현대의 예술은 가시적인 아름다움 이면의 인간적 본질, 허상의 심층에 은폐된 인간의 그로테스크한 진실에 대한 물음이고자 한다. 고대 이래 카타르시스는 어떤 식으로든 삶의 그로테스크한 국면과 불가분의 관계에 있는 감정의 정화작용으로 잠정 인식되어 왔다. 더욱이 21세기는 지난 어느 세기보다 그로테스크한 욕망의 재현과 수용을 즐기는 대중문화 주도의 시대라, 그로테스크와 카타르시스는 한층 더 상호 직결되는 논리가 되고 있다. 이에 우리는 미셸 레리스의 자서전을 대상 텍스트로 하여 그로테스크와 카타르시스의 상관성을 정신분석학적 관점에서 심층 논의하고자 하였다. 우선 방법론의 측면에서 그로테스크의 문제는 형식 미학적 차원을 넘어 인간의 무의식적 욕망과 밀접한 차원에 있어 무엇보다 정신분석학적 사유를 요했다. 그리고 연구 대상 텍스트로서 레리스의 자서전은 삶과 죽음, 숭고함과 기괴함, 탐미와 본능 등, 심미적인 동시에 원초적인 상호 이질적 욕망의 역동적 해체와 생성의 논리를 문학적으로 보여주는, 다시 말해 그로테스크를 바탕으로 카타르시스에 이르는 미학적 및 정신분석학적 독서가 가능한 서사의 전형을 보여주었다. 요컨대 우리는 레리스의 자서전을 통해 콤플렉스(그로테스크)에서 동일화(감정이입), 멜랑콜리(연민), 승화(카타르시스)로 연계되는 예술 향유의 심적 구조와 논리를 단계적으로 고찰하면서 그로테스크와 카타르시스의 상관성을 정신분석학적 차원에서 다각적으로 논의하였다.

영어초록

Arts, since Romanticism and particularly postmodern art, has pursued catharsis through grotesque aesthetics than through sublimity. In the preface to his play Cromwell, which is called the manifesto of Romanticism, Victor Hugo declared that in a world where contradictory things coexist, art should pursue the dynamic grotesque—grotesque in which contradictory qualities such as good and evil or elegant and wicked are sublimated into one—rather than only focusing on ideal beauty. Hugo also stated that the grotesque would form the aesthetics of a new era. Since then, the grotesque has remained a logic underlying contemporary aesthetics. Contemporary art aspires to become a question of the human nature hidden behind visible beauty that enquires about the grotesque truth of human existence located deep in an illusion. Since ancient times, catharsis has been provisionally recognized as the purification or purgation of emotions that are inseparable from the grotesque phases of life. Further, in the 21st century characterized as a popular culture-driven era of enjoying the representation and reception of grotesque desires more than any other century, grotesque and catharsis constitute a logical relationship that are even more directly linked to each other. Accordingly, from a psychoanalytic perspective, we attempted to discuss in depth the correlation between the grotesque and catharsis using Michel Leiris’ autobiography as a text. In a methodological sense, the issue of grotesque required psychoanalytic thinking before everything else, as it is closely related to the unconscious desires of humans beyond the formal-aesthetic dimensions. As a text for discussion in this study, Leiris’ autobiography provided a literary description of the logic behind the creation and destruction of disparate desires that while being aesthetic, are also primitive, such as life and death, sublimity and grotesqueness, and beauty and instinct. In other words, it epitomized a narrative by providing a catharsis based on the grotesque that we can read aesthetically and psychoanalytically. Concluding, through Leiris’ autobiography, we discussed multilaterally the correlation between the grotesque and catharsis from a psychoanalytic perspective, considering the psychological structure and logic of artistic enjoyment consisting of the phased articulation of the complex (grotesque), identification (empathy), melancholy (pity), and sublimation (catharsis).
